Thanks to her great mixed defenses, Sophia can make great use of a many different boons. She prefers Attack on her offensive set, which is based around the maximum amount of damage in a single hit. Sophia’s defensive sets are more flexible, but function best when she has a boon in Defense. In fact, the only stat Sophia does not make use of is Speed, which is already poor and can be completely disregarded.
Boons
-
+ATK: Attack is the best choice for Sophia when running an offensive set. Due to her low Speed, she wants to deal as much damage in a single hit as she can.
-
+DEF: Sophia’s defensive set works best when she has a boon in Defense. Since she aims to be taking many hits at close range, a Defense boon gives her a very meaningful boost to her survivability. It also brings up the power of Sophia’s Bonfire and Ignis: two great Special options on her.
Neutral
-
RES: Resistance is Sophia’s secondary tank stat. Higher Resistance makes it easier for Sophia to apply Ploy skills, but otherwise, increasing it through a boon does not affect her matchups in any significant way. She would prefer it to not be reduced, as it does affect her matchups against dragons and mages.
-
HP: HP is important only because it affects her overall survivability. It is less important than Resistance, but more than Speed.
Banes
- -SPD: With only 19 base Speed, Sophia has no chance of double attacking any unit. Being so low already, it’s best for her to abandon Speed entirely. Sophia can even take advantage of enemies who double her in order to charge stronger Special attacks.

33 base Attack isn’t the highest on red mages, but places Sophia as one of the better red Blade tome candidates. This build is simple in purpose and execution: attempt to have Sophia crush her opponents with overwhelming magical damage. For best results, make sure to pair Sophia up with a unit who can grant her Attack buffs.
A Blade tome is the core of the set, allowing Sophia to deal extraordinary damage when buffed. The Special charge delay is unfortunate, but acceptable, as she will deal enough damage with regular hits to beat her foes. Death Blow in her A slot and Attack +3 in her Seal slot give Sophia more straight damage.
Sophia’s optimal B slot skill is Chill Res. With the debuffs provided by this skill, Sophia can deal even more damage. Swordbreaker is a very decent alternative giving her wins over many high-Resistance swordsmen, most notably Sigurd. Glimmer is chosen for its relatively fast charge time and great scaling with Sophia’s damage. It performs very well when charged, but she will rarely get the chance to activate it thanks to her low Speed and Special delay from her weapon.
Sophia’s Resistance is high enough to support her team with Ploy skills. Atk Ploy is great for supporting allies, while Res Ploy is her best choice (provided she isn’t running Chill Res in her B slot). Draw Back allows Sophia to support her teammates without running into danger, while Rally Def/Res is best if supporting another Blade tome user or tanky allies.

Sacred Seal: Quick Riposte
While she performs well with an offensive set, a much more unique choice is the defensive route. This set turns Sophia into a wall capable of taking both types of damage, and dealing heavy magic damage in return. However, many of the skill options here require significant investment, making this an effective but expensive set.
The Candelabra is an ideal weapon, granting Sophia +2 to all stats when she is Attacked. She appreciates all its boosts except for Speed, and the Defense increase is crucial. Both an Owl tome and Fenrir are only slightly worse, and the latter is Sophia’s default weapon, making the build much cheaper.
Close Counter is the bread and butter of this set, allowing Sophia to counterfoes who engage upon her at close range. To survive their damage, she invests heavily in Defense, taking a Defense refine (and stat boon, if possible). Sophia is nowhere near fast enough to double foes naturally, meaning the Quick Riposte skill is required for her in order to strike back twice against her opponents.
Guard is also highly recommended, to prevent foes from charging their Specials on Sophia. Guard is key for stopping units designed to fire off Specials in two or three charges, and greatly weakens the damage from users of Firesweep Bows and Firesweep Swords. Bonfire is the optimal Special, triggering on Sophia’s second attack (assuming she is doubled) and hitting hard. Ignis is just as viable, and it allows Sophia to save her Special to KO a separate foe. Bonfire is better if Sophia only needs to defeat one enemy, while Ignis allows her to handle two in the same round.
Her support options are again Ploy skills. Res Ploy and Atk Ploy help Sophia in direct combat with enemies. Reposition is great when playing Sophia alongside other tanks, especially armor (due to their limited movement). She can also provide Rally buffs to allies if a mobility skill is not required.
Introduction
Sophia is a unit who appears in Fire Emblem Binding Blade and Fire Emblem Blazing Sword. In Heroes, she is a red tome-wielding infantry who distinguishes herself from her contemporaries through a truly bizarre statline. (Sophia’s statline is very close to her companion, the desert guardian Hawkeye).
Unlike most mages who boast high Speed and lack Defense, Sophia has a remarkable amount of Defense and Resistance. She trades this for an abysmal Speed stat of 19. This stat distribution allows Sophia to run defensive sets as well as offensive, and with her solid Attack of 33, she can hit enemies harder than most of the fast red mages.
Sophia has a unique playstyle compared to most other mages due to her unusual stat allocation. She is one of, if not the easiest red mage to obtain and merge. Although there are mages who can run stronger versions of Sophia’s builds, she performs excellently when fully built.
Strengths
Excellent Defense for a mage
Sophia excels in comparison to other mages thanks to her great base Defense of 28. She can take hits fairly well, and high Defense helps her fight bow and dagger users. Sophia’s low Speed betrays this Defense somewhat, as she is nearly guaranteed to be doubled unless she can OHKO the opponent. Her Defense does not help her much on offensive set, but it is the most important element of her defensive set.
Can run both offensive and defensive sets
Thanks largely to her stellar Defense, Sophia can run defensive sets as well as offensive ones. Having a high Resistance helps her greatly, leaving her with no real defensive weaknesses outside her Speed. Sophia can be an unpredictable unit due to her versatility, and should be scouted and engaged carefully.
Easy to obtain and merge
Sophia can be obtained through the free hero maps at 1 and 2 star rarities. Sophia can also be summoned at 3 and 4 star rarities. Being such a common unit, it’s easy to hunt for good boon/bane sets on her and acquire merges. However, her optimal sets do require some valuable skill inheritance, which limits her when it comes to budget builds.
Weaknesses
Cripplingly low Speed
Sophia only has one true weakness, which is low Speed. This hinders her viability in a number of different ways. First and foremost: she cannot double attack foes without help from skills such as Quick Riposte or Swordbreaker. Despite this, her base 33 Attack can allow her to OHKO many foes, which makes her Speed less of an issue offensively. She is also extremely likely to be doubled herself. Despite her high Defense, she can be KO’d by enemies boasting type advantage or high Attack.
Team Options
Counters
Despite being able to run two different sets, her counters remain mostly the same between both. Sophia does not have the Speed to double opponents, meaning most of her counters are units she cannot KO in one hit. She is extremely vulnerable to quad-attack builds, as they will easily cut through her Defense when attacking four times.
-
Quad Attackers: Sophia’s Speed is so low that even most Brave weapon builds will quad attack her, KO’ing her despite her defensive investment. Elincia, Olwen, Setsuna, Brave Lyn, Bridal Cordelia and Arden will tear her to pieces when initiating.
-
Blue Tanks: Sophia does not have the power to punch through most blue tanks. Even slow ones can initiate into and double her, KO’ing her without the need for their Special. Nowi, Hardin, Effie, Nephenee and Brave Lucina can initiate into Sophia and KO her.
- Firesweep Lancers: Even with Guard to delay their instant Specials, these units have the power to outright double and KO Sophia. They are also sometimes seen with Brave Lance sets, against which Sophia fares just as poorly. Tana, Cordelia, Hinoka and Est all have the power and means to handle Sophia.

This build is specifically made to capitalize on the Brash Assault seal, so if you don't have, this build COULD work with the B-skill, but it works far better with the seal. Any boon will work, barring Speed, and -Speed is really the only bane you want, although -HP and Ardent Sacrifice will speed up the process of getting to that 50% (Reciprocal Aid is used for allowing her to heal low HP allies to take that low HP). Even neutral will work, just don't hinder her fire power. For the A-skill, while anything that either ups her defenses or offense will work, Defiant Atk 3 is recommended as it makes sure she one-rounds, which is needed as if she takes a single hit while under 50%, she's probably done for. Desperation 2 is the recommended B-skill as it allows her to get both attacks in without risk of getting attacked, basically giving her a pseudo-red Dire Thunder, and Desperation 3 is just overkill. The only thing she'll really be doubling is Arden and even then, he can't counter unless they're running Distant Counter for whatever reason, so Desperation 2 is cheaper and all that's really needed. C-Skill can be anything you want, and while buff skills are recommended, Res Ploy or Threaten Res can be used to potentially up her damage output. Brash Assault 3 seal MUST be used for everything to work (Although it still functions fine with 2). Weapon is Fenrir+ for budget reasons, since this is a semi-budget build, and all you really need is some fire power, although a def forged Wolf tome works too. Just use an HP lowering skill for Support skill. Special is Dragon Fang for budget, although Ignis can also work, or Glacies, depending on which defensive stat you want to increase. All in all, it's a frail build, that does require her to survive hits, but it can be a counter to a lot of common arena threats, most notably, Hector and Brave Lyn (Especially the latter, since she can survive a round with +Def boon and Def forge, and get in Brash Assault/Defiant/Desperation range).

SHE SO GOOD!!
If you want a Brave Lyn/Archer counter that charges up a nuke after being initiated on look no further! Also, she WILL 1vs4 some games in Arena Assault.
However... This build sucks for everything except using that nasty Ignis nuke:
+ATK really is that much better for her game; She doesn't make any significant use out of any of the seals.
Sophia's ideal Arena build goes something like what I have, with these changes:
- + ATK IV's.
- replace Ignis with Moonbow.
- apply Quickened Pulse.
- replace QP 3 with Swordbreaker.
I wanted a quality of life unit to use in Arena Assault, and I'm super satisfied with the results :D

Two words: MAXIMUM POWER!!! I chose Death Blow over LaD for 2 reasons. 1. Sophia's speed isn't very good. 2. Death Blow gives her more attack while not compromising her defenses. B Tomebreaker allows her to hopefully use her high attack to nuke blue mages faster than her (Reinhardt, Mae, Linde). Threaten Res is used to poke holes in enemies in tanker enemies and to help secure kills. Fenrir+ is used for maximum damage, as 13 might is quite high. I would use Raourblade+, but being an infantry unit, she doesn't too many chances for buffs. Pivot is used to quickly dip out if things get hectic. Dragon Gaze is used to deal the highest damage possible with her high attack.

I like to call this set the Red Robin for reasons that should really be apparent.
The focus of this build is to have Sophia check Red Tome units (all of whom double her, as she has the second lowest speed in the game) and wall out Greens and Colorless (who don't run Cancel affinity). If they do run CA you can instead have her run Earth Boost, because most archers and daggers have 40 or less HP even when merged to +10, so an HP seal will allow her to tank CA units and kill on counter with QR.
As this Sophia doesn't run Close Counter she should leave Sword units to another teammate, and is completely fine with taking a hit from melee greens then proceeding to eradicate them next turn.
Sophia prefers an Atk boon, and since her speed is simply abysmal, we're gonna go ahead and feed that to the sharks; so her bane is speed. Taking advantage of the fact that she has bad speed, she has Draconic Aura as a 3 turn special, well, because she's a dragon and also cause she'll reach her special faster thanks to being doubled; nuff said. If she has a Res boon, she can opt to run Iceberg instead and an Atk Ploy C skill.
Reciprocal Aid and Breath of Life allow her to act as a passive healer. She can also utilize RA to heal herself when needed.

With the Distant counter 1 seal and a breaker skill of choice, Sophia is a strong tank without the use of tri-adept. You can always sub tri-adept for most cases, but it leaves her weak to cancel affinity.
An effective 47 defense to archers means brave bow archers barely dent her.
A breaker skill of choice allows for additional coverage for swords, axes, or red tomes. And helps her tank those types better.
The addition of merges and summoner/ally support only increases her viability as a mage-tank, and cements her role as a 0x2 character.
