Selena’s low base Attack of 25 limits her to an Attack boon in all circumstances. As for a bane, Selena can reduce any one of her defensive stats, but Resistance is the least important stat for her.
Boons
-
+ATK: The only boon that matters as Selena is much less powerful without it. It gives her an increase of four, bringing her Attack to base 29 from 25.
Neutral
-
HP: Selena does not have much HP for a tank, so she’d prefer to keep this stat as high as possible.
-
DEF: Reducing this lowers the power of Selena’s Bonfire. She also needs it to tank strong hits from other reds such as Ayra.
-
SPD: She enjoys having high Speed, but it’s not more important than Attack and shouldn’t be reduced.
Banes
- -RES: This only affects her matchups against Dragons, as she loses to most mages. This can be reduced without much penalty.

With a Slaying Edge, Selena can charge and fire off powerful specials such as Ignis and Bonfire. This set is built to allow Selena the ability to charge and fire off Ignis on her first counterattack. This lets her OHKO many foes that would otherwise threaten her, and with Wrath, she can perform this feat multiple times.
A Slaying Edge combined with Steady Breath and Quickened Pulse is what lets Selena charge her Special so quickly. Bonfire is a good secondary option if one of these skills can’t be obtained. Wrath is very important and must be included to ensure Selena deals enough damage. A Wo Dao can also work with Bonfire.
Quick Riposte is a decent alternative if you can’t run Quickened Pulse, but it leaves Selena open to units with Swordbreaker. Reposition is great on all teams and comes naturally on Selena. She’s great at supporting tanks, so a Dual Spur is chosen to boost their defenses. Atk Smoke also works well, helping her team receive subsequent hits from enemies.

With this build, Selena becomes a threat to three different types of units: Armor, sword-users, and green units. Her job is is primarily to beat Armor teams, but she can be used to counter other types of units as well. This version of Selena is designed for Arena Assault, where she can be picked onto a team to counter a specific threat.
Wielding her Armorsmasher, she can punch through all red and green Armor in the game with ease. Swordbreaker is recommended to ensure victory vs. faster units like Draug and Zelgius. It also lets Selena beat units like Ayra and Ike as well as tank Elincia.
Fury gives her a much-appreciated stat boost, particularly to her Defense. With a Defense refine and Fury, Selena can tank Ayra’s Regnal Astra. Healing specials are great if you want Selena to fight multiple foes in one round and are recommended if you want her to primarily counter Armored units.
Quick Riposte helps her score doubles against Amelia and faster enemies with Swordbreaker. Her Assist skill is Reposition, a great general pick and helps Selena support all kinds of teammates. Threaten Spd works just fine as her C slot skill, but Dual Spur skills work even better if she’s paired up with tanky allies such as Hector and Effie.
Introduction
Hailing from Fire Emblem Fates (despite looking very similar to an Awakening character), Selena is a red sword-wielding Infantry. She was considered a good unit on release due to her great base skills, but the dawn of Skill Inheritance made her fall from grace.
Selena has an odd stat distribution and there are few units like her in the game. Well-rounded defenses combined with high Speed makes her a nightmare to KO. Where she struggles the most is in her abysmally low base Attack, but this can be remedied somewhat with correct boon/bane and Skill choice.
These weaknesses mean that few players choose to invest in her, with stronger options available in free units like Masked Marth and Black Knight. With investment, Selena can become strong, and she only takes a little bit of work to shine in Arena Assault.
Strengths
Well-rounded defenses
32 Defense and 28 Resistance make Selena a well-rounded combatant, able to take hits from physical and magic units alike. While her Defense is not as high as many dedicated tanks, few can boast the Resistance as well. She notably possesses good matchups against green and red dragons.
High Speed
Base 35 Speed is nothing special on its own, but combined with her good mixed defenses and it makes her extremely difficult to ORKO. Selena’s unusual statline is similar to units such as Nephenee and Corrin-F, who combine high Speed with Defense, to turn them into sturdy tanks. Selena can boost her Speed even further with weapon refines and skills like Fury.
Weaknesses
Low Attack
Selena’s biggest weakness is her base 25 Attack, one of the lowest in the entire game. It means she requires an Attack boon to be viable . Furthermore, it means she can’t opt for a Speed-boosting boon like other units. She can be outsped by other units who are able to freely invest into their Speed.
Poorly optimized statline
Her stats are well-rounded, but far from high and are not optimized in the slightest. While units with similar statlines such as Nephenee and Corrin-F have the same stat total, they have less Resistance than Selena, stats which are better put into Attack and Defense.
Suffers overwhelming competition for a team-slot
At 3-4 stars, Selena is easy to acquire and merge. But there are many other stronger units, even available to free players. Masked Marth, Arden, and Black Knight are three examples of superior units available for free. Players with the resources to do many summons will not find Selena an attractive investment option compared to other top-tier red units.
Team Options
Counters
Most of Selena’s counters are blue, especially if she’s running Triangle Adept. Mages can outspeed her and cut through her Resistance. She won’t have the damage to power through blue tanks and doesn’t have enough Defense to wall strong offensive units.
-
Blue mages: Many can outspeed Selena with a Speed boon and skills like Swift Sparrow. Reinhardt, L’Arachel, Delthea, and Linde all spell doom for Selena. Many can OHKO her outright with a few buffs and a Blade Tome.
-
Strong colorless attackers: Selena’s defense is decent, but not enough to protect against units like Halloween Jakob and Bridal Cordelia, both who can pour damage onto Selena without penalty. Brave Lyn and Innes are also strong attackers who can breach Selena’s defenses easily.
- Slow Swordbreakers: On her Wrath build, Selena can be easily countered be slower units who run Swordbreaker to win high-tier matchups. Chrom, Alfonse, Eldigan, and Ike are commonly seen with Swordbreaker and will KO Selena if they get to attack twice.

This build uses +Spd -HP, because +Atk is for chumps. Who needs attack when Selena can just slam opponents with a 60 damage Ignis every turn? Not to mention that this twintailed wall has 50 Def and 38 Res in enemy phase melee, with 42 Spd to boot. Even Nowi will have trouble breaking through without Swordbreaker or Triangle Adept.
Down to the build itself.
Wo Dao+ is the obvious weapon choice because of how well it matches Selena's hair.
Harsh Command should also be self-explanatory.
For the special, she calls it Ignis but really it's just her normal tsun rage. As such, it works better when used in retaliation to unwanted advances.
Steady Breath is the result of Selena's recent yoga classes. She's trying to mellow out a bit.
Of course she still has a rather short fuse, and when that inevitably blows her Wrath explodes, adding even more fuel to the fire.
As this is an enemy phase build, Attack Smoke works very well for neutering nearby enemies after the first engagement, or even for initiating on a non-threatening enemy to soften the whole team up before enemy phase even starts. Combined with her already massive defensive stats, this allows her to take on an army single-handedly (though with some spur support even the heaviest hitters will be left powerless).
And finally, for when idiots try to invade her personal space, Selena activates her Close Defense seal, shutting down their completely uncalled-for advances while simultaneously boosting her totally justified retaliation.

One of my most invested, most beloved, most used, and most favorite sword unit to use who is my number 1 favorite character from fates is the Tsundere Selena. I have went through a long time in fe heroes with her. I also went time searching the most valuable skills to improve her. I know she is outclassed by the many existing sword units in the game (especially Joshua), but the thing is that well. I don’t care. What they lack that Selena has is well, being my number 1 waifu to love. I will always use her no matter what fact trys to stand in my way. To prove my love and dedication for her I made her my S support unit as well as my first +10 unit. Her ivs are +def, -hp which is one of her best ivs. I have given her many skills for a variety of builds, but this is the personal one I like using.
For her weapon her default armorsmasher is preferred. The reason why is because we live in this arena world where armors are just everywhere not only scoring high, but also causing havoc. Armorsmasher makes it so that she can deal with them easily. For refinement I went for res refine to give her a bit more resistance for dueling mages with a certain A skill.
For the assist skill reposition is preferred. It is the most useful assist in the game because of the many options it gives you. It can be usef offensively or defensively. My main problem with this is that it is nowadays rare due to the now flooded 3-4 star summoning pool.
For the special bonfire is preferred to give him some damage output. Although most prefer ignis, this build tends to make it so that Selena can reach some respectable amounts of attack.
For the A skill I made a pretty big sacrifice and gave her distant counter. Now you are probably wondering why distant counter on a unit with only 25 base atk (29 when +10 and 31 when +10 and S supported)? Well the reason why is because she is actually a pretty good user of it due to her mixed bulk. Mages can be annoying to fight when you’re lacking in range units. Distant counter tends to solve that issue. Plus if she wants to hit hard, I can always just use team support.
For the B skill wrath is preferred to give her boosted damage with her special. Although it has some anti synergy with aether, it is still useful nonetheless. The extra +10 damage can boost her damage as well as give her a bit of healing of aether. Improving her sustainability. What I also like about wrath is how it matches her angry tsun personality.
For her C skill I went for even spd wave for some extra speed. It will also help with a certain seal.
For the seal I went for atk/def bond to give her some balance between her melee and ranged fights. What will help her use this skill effectively is the C skill even spd wave. Meaning if allies want the extra speed, they will have to be adjacent to her to help her give a extra boost to attack and defense. More attack and defense also increases bonfire damage. Although it is tricky to use it on player phase, most of the time she’ll be using it on enemy phase.
In conclusion I think Selena has potential when she’s heavily invested although she has been powercrept by Joshua (due to the new heroic grails feature) as well as other sword units, there’s this fact you should know. Joshua may have her statline, but what he can’t take away is the fact that I will always always ALWAYS use Selena. As for the other sword units I might still use them due to their different roles, but I don’t use them as much to the extent of Selena. I also run other builds that I also like using. Like my double brazen build where she can fix her atk with a combination of the brazen atk/def or brazen atk/spd A skill as well as the help of the brazen atk/res seal and the steady breath build where her melee battles become better. The stats are from Selena who has no weapon and no S support stat boost and who’s +10.

When you try to min-max every character some are absolutely going to end up just terrible. That is Selena's problem. Her attack is poor yes, but a Res bane just magnifies this problem. Opting for an HP bane means you can boost her Res to the point where she can run ploys. 32 might not seem great for ploys, but really the ones it's going to affect the least are those with great defenses, which she'll have issues with regardless of her Boon/Bane and mages/anti-mages which typically have shoddy defenses anyway.
Brazen Atk/Res and Safeguard means when she's under the threshold she's sporting defenses of 39/39 when the enemy attacks her. And is they are melee she's hitting back with a solid 50 Attack. Not to shabby for a "tier 6".
For her B slot I opted for Guard as it would help her survive to get into Brazen range when she doesn't have to worry so much about specials. Though Wrath or even Vantage could find respectable use on her.
For her C and S slots I chose Defense Ploy and Speed Ploy to further increase her offensive potential, and defensive potential in avoiding doubles. If Ploys don't seem reliable enough you could opt for Threaten Defense and Threaten Speed, but they are generally a bit harder to setup for baiting to be as useful.

This Selena is great at bringing down many units and acting like a wall for magic and physical strikes while being able to easily double most other units.
