  • Sacred Seal: Quickened Pulse / Quick Riposte / Atk/Spd Bond / Darting Blow

Given the similarities between Rutger and other myrmidons like Ayra and Karla, it makes sense that his strongest build is very similar. With the Slaying Edge+ and Quickened Pulse, Rutger can fully charge Moonbow on turn 1, and deliver a powerful Wrath-boosted attack to deal considerable damage or KO an enemy. While Rutger cannot improve his stats with an Asset, merges will improve his Attack and Speed, allowing him to keep up with his rivals somewhat.

The core components of this build are Moonbow, Distant Counter, Wrath and Quickened Pulse. Moonbow is chosen for it’s short 2 turn cooldown, allowing it to be used on turn 1 after Quickened Pulse takes effect, and on every subsequent turn if Wrath is active. Wrath not only improves the regularity of Rutger’s Special attacks, but also provides a helpful +10 flat damage. Distant Counter ensures that Rutger can retaliate from any range, which will enable him to soak ranged attacks with his high Speed and respectable HP pool before retaliating with a deadly counterattack.

Rutger’s Assist and C slot skills are relatively flexible. For the C slot, offensive wave skills like Even Attack Wave or Even Speed Wave can improve Rutger’s combat effectiveness, but these effects can be granted by his teammates.

Show Explanation/Analysis
  • Weapon: Wo Dao+ (+Spd) / Slaying Edge+ (+Spd)
  • Assist: Reciprocal Aid / Flexible
  • Special: Moonbow / Luna / Galeforce
  • Passive A: Swift Sparrow / Fury
  • Passive B: Desperation / Special Spiral
  • Passive C: Even Speed Wave / Even Attack Wave / Flexible
  • Sacred Seal: Flashing Blade / Darting Blow / Atk/Spd +2

This build aims to sculpt Rutger into a more offense-oriented fighter who excels on the Player Phase moreso than the Enemy Phase. Though his Slaying Edge+ is fine, a Wo Dao+ can be taken instead to provide more damage upon Special activation. This decision will largely depend on his choice of Special and B slot skill.

Rutger has three appealing options for his Special skill: the first is the tried and tested Moonbow. With a short cooldown and relatively consistent damage, this skill complements the Wo Dao perfectly to provide quick burst damage. Alternatively, Rutger can opt for a damage skill with a longer cooldown like Luna and take Special Spiral. This will greatly improve Rutger’s damage output, though he will lose the safety granted by Desperation if he fails to KO his opponent. Lastly, Galeforce can be an unconventional but effective alternative, and is greatly improved by his original Slaying Edge and the Flashing Blade Sacred Seal.

Rutger’s remaining skills will depend on the above choices. Reciprocal Aid can be useful to bring Rutger into Desperation range, but the Assist slot is flexible. Similarly, Even Speed Wave can be helpful to improve Rutger’s Speed and offers great synergy with Flashing Blade, but he can achieve this buff through other means. Attack buffs will also be beneficial, as Rutger’s base Attack of 32 leaves something to be desired.

With all of the bonuses listed, Rutger will initiate combat with a respectable 50/52 in Attack and Speed, nearly guaranteeing a Speed-based follow-up attack as well as activation of the Flashing Blade seal. These figures can also be further improved with Drive or Spur buffs.

Show Explanation/Analysis

  • Special: Moonbow / Luna / Aether
  • Passive A: Atk/Def Bond / Atk/Res Bond
  • Passive B: Chill Spd / Chill Def / Quick Riposte / Wrath
  • Passive C: Even Speed Wave / Even Attack Wave / Flexible
  • Sacred Seal: Atk/Spd Bond / Darting Blow / Atk/Spd +2

Though many will choose to find an alternative to the Atk/Def Bond skill in Rutger’s base kit, his solid HP and Speed stats make Rutger deceptively bulky and he can do sufficiently well by improving on this trait.

For a Bond based build, Heart’s Blade is the logical choice for a weapon. Though expensive and hard to obtain, Rutger can make great use of the +3 to all of his combat stats on top of his other Bond skills. The most readily available choices are Atk/Def Bond in his A slot and Atk/Spd Bond in the S slot, which grants a total stat spread of 59/50/37/27 in Atk/Spd/Def/Res, though Rutger’s chosen Bond skills can be interchanged to fit the needs of the team. With Atk/Res Bond and Atk/Def Bond in the A and S slots respectively, Rutger can wield a more balanced stat spread of 59/45/37/32 in Atk/Spd/Def/Res before merges, buffs or other external factors, so long as he is adjacent to an ally.

Moonbow suits Rutger nicely due to its short cooldown, though with more defensive support Rutger can pull off stronger Special skills like Luna or even Aether. For his B slot, Chill Spd or Chill Def are the most straight-forward options, as Rutger can wait for the enemy to approach while receiving bonuses through his Bond skills and debuffing the enemy. Quick Riposte can guarantee follow-up attacks, allowing him to forgo a Speed boosting Bond skill in favour of more defensive buffs. Alternatively, Wrath can be a large damage increase, though it may be more difficult to reach the necessary HP threshold without moving Rutger away from an adjacent ally.

Introduction

The infamous master of critical hits finally arrives, and as a Grand Hero Battle reward unit with a statline that rivals Ayra, Karla and Owain, Rutger shouldn’t be underestimated as a fearsome hero.

Though his Attack sits at a middling base 32, hindered further by his inability to gain an Asset, Rutger’s impressive 39 Speed and impressively high HP pool make him a nimble and surprisingly bulky unit. These stats allow Rutger to perform admirably as an offensive or defensive hero, as his Speed provides crucial follow-up attacks or nullifies Speed based follow-ups from enemy heroes.

As previously mentioned, Rutger’s greatest weakness is his inability to improve his stats with an Asset. Though his base stats surpass those of a myrmidon like Owain, his rival can wield an Attack or Speed Asset to gain the upper hand. His lack of a PRF weapon also hinders his usefulness, as all three of Ayra, Karla and Owain wield their own unique weapons in addition to the range of inheritable weapons. Nevertheless, Rutger can be a powerful hero, with an extensive repertoire of powerful and effective build options.

Strengths

Great Offensive Stats

32/39 in Attack and Speed is a great offensive spread, and while he cannot improve it with an Asset, it provides a solid foundation for improvement through other means like passive skills, buffs and refinements.

Respectable Bulk

With a base HP of 44 alongside his impressive Speed stat, Rutger can take a hit quite well with minimal risk of follow-up Attacks outside of those triggered by skills. Furthermore, Rutger’s defensive stats of 29/24, while not the greatest, are enough to put him level with Ayra and Owain.

Weaknesses

Reliant on Specials for damage

Rutger’s 32 base Attack isn’t the greatest for an offensive unit, meaning he’ll be heavily reliant on Special skills for effective damage dealing.Thankfully his high Speed enables him to deal more follow-up attacks, and thus charge his Special more quickly. Additionally, Slaying Edge+ as his default weapon will ensure he can use his Special more often.

No PRF Weapon

Whereas Ayra, Karla and Owain - Rutger’s closest rivals - all possess a unique PRF weapon, Rutger has no such advantage. He must make do with inheritable weapons instead.

Infantry Mobility

As an infantry unit, Rutger has access to powerful skills like Wrath, but his inability to traverse some terrain makes it harder for him to initiate combat. This weakens his effectiveness during the Player Phase, and forces him into more defensive builds.

Team Options

Rutger’s ideal partner can improve his key stats: Attack and Speed. Any ally who can buff these stats will improve Rutger’s ability to KO enemy heroes. Additionally, Refresher heroes can grant Rutger another action, allowing him to deal more damage to the enemy team or reposition to a safe tile. Lastly, powerful green heroes can check his natural triangle disadvantage.

  • Refreshers: Heroes that can refresh Rutger’s turn and grant him another action make for powerful partners. Performing Azura, New Years Azura, Reyson, Legendary Azura, Leanne, Olivia (YT) and Lene are potential partners. The first three can check Rutger’s weakness to blue heroes, whereas Legendary Azura deserves honorable mention for her ability to improve Rutger’s movement.

  • Buffers: Partners who can improve Rutger’s stats are naturally a great help. Most heroes can cover this role, but some of the best examples include Ephraim, Robin (M) and Robin (F). Refresher heroes with unique buffing capability like Performing Azura and Legendary Azura make for great choices too.

  • Strong Green Heroes: Powerful green heroes can cover Rutger’s disadvantage to blue heroes. Possible choices include Legendary Hector, Lewyn, Nino, Cherche, Surtr, and many more.

Counters

Rutger’s greatest counter will naturally be blue heroes, who can abuse their triangle advantage to deal lethal damage to Rutger. Additionally, heroes who can circumvent his high Speed to deal follow-up attacks will take him down with ease, making him a poor answer to armored heroes. Rutger will also struggle to cope with debuffs: his middling Attack stat leaves him in need of a buff partner, which can be exploited with skills such as Panic Ploy.

  • Strong Blue Heroes: Blue heroes will deal increased damage to Rutger, making them a suitable answer. Some of the best counters will be able to target his Resistance, making Legendary Tiki, Ophelia, Ishtar and Reinhardt some of the strongest counters.

  • Guaranteed Follow-up Attacks: Heroes who can guarantee a follow-up Attack and circumvent Rutger’s Speed will take him down with ease. Heroes like Tibarn, or armored heroes with Bold Fighter are prime examples.

  • Debuffers: With Rutger’s reliance on Attack buffs to deal more considerable damage outside of Special activation, heroes who can debuff Rutger or reverse his existing buffs will cause a multitude of problems.
