Boons
-
+ATK: At a low-end value of 26, Olwen greatly appreciates a boon in Attack in order to boost her raw damage output. In addition to this, it comes as a superboon (+4 boost rather than the standard +3).
-
+SPD: A boon in Speed is also coveted, as it allows her to maximize her damage output by securing additional follow-up attacks. This is particularly effective when utilizing a Blade tome.
Neutral
-
RES: Although raising it is not a priority, Olwen prefers to keep her Resistance in-tact in order to tank magical damage and effectively utilize Ploy skills.
Banes
-
-DEF: Defense is Olwen’s weakest stat and the best bane that she can receive, as dropping it further will hardly hinder her performance
- -HP: A bane in HP is comparable to a bane in Defense but takes away from her overall bulk, making it less desirable than the aforementioned.

As with most Blade Tome users, Speed is Olwen’s most important stat. This makes a boon in it the choice nature that Olwen can take in order to maximize her damage output by securing additional follow-up attacks. A boon in Attack also makes for a suitable choice, as it increases her raw damage output. This makes it a more effective choice against slower bulkier opponents. In particular, this can be the deciding factor in her matchup against Fallen MRobin.
For her Assist, Ardent Sacrifice has great synergy with Desperation. Olwen’s poor physical bulk of 54 makes her susceptible to getting killed in only one hit; by dropping her HP without the need to engage in combat, Olwen can safely get into Desperation’s 75% HP threshold. Otherwise, any choice of movement skill such as Reposition will make for a suitable Assist.
Glimmer is a great choice of Special on any Blade Tome user, as it scales with the additional damage received from Hone/Fortify buffs and activates within a reasonable timeframe despite the cooldown penalty tied to Blade tomes. Alternatively, Moonbow can be used as a more effective option against opponents with extraordinarily high Resistance such as Lute and Lyn (LA).
Moving on to main skills, Swift Sparrow is the premium choice of A skill by providing a strong boost to her offensive stats on initiation without losing anything else. A higher risk higher reward option is Life and Death, as it boosts her offensive stats even higher at the cost of severely damaging her overall bulk. This makes her even more susceptible to getting OHKO’d by both physical and magic damage alike. Fury makes for another solid choice by making it easier to get into Desperation range through both the 6 damage recoil taken after combat as well as by increasing her overall bulk at the cost of a marginally weaker offense. In addition to this, the boost in Resistance improves her ability to utilize Ploy skills.
Desperation is the key to any glass cannon mage; once in the HP range, Olwen will be able to safely perform follow-up attacks without the risk of getting killed on the counterattack. As for C skills, Olwen’s relatively high base Resistance of 30 allows her to effectively utilize Ploys. In particular, the Res Ploy increases Olwen’s overall damage output while Spd Ploy secures her additional follow-up attacks should they land. A more team-synergetic option is Hone Cavalry, as it allows Olwen to be a benefactor on a cavalry-centric team which she is most effective on. Otherwise, the C slot can be replaced with whatever will accommodate her team.
Last but not least, Olwen has several options for Sacred Seals. If she isn’t already utilizing Res Ploy in his C slot, it can also be run in the Sacred Seal slot. Heavy Blade is another option with a consistent activation thanks to the damage scaling property of Blade tomes. This allows Olwen to activate her Special more frequently. Finally, both Speed +3 and Attack +3 make for good picks in order to give Olwen a solid offensive stat boost.

This set aims to make effective use out of Olwen’s native tome, Dire Thunder. Although not as consistent of a user as her brother, Reinhardt, due to her significantly lower Attack, she makes up for it with her high Speed. This allows her to perform quad-attack against her opponents. Ardent Sacrifice remains applicable with this purely offensive style of play in order to safely get into the HP range for Desperation. As for her Special, Luna makes for a potent and cooldown-efficient option by activating on every fourth hit during a quad attack.
Life and Death makes for a fantastic A skill, as it completely mitigates the Speed penalty tied to Dire Thunder as well as giving her a sizable boost to her Attack that can potentially translate into an additional 20 damage on a quad-initiation. If one wants to retain Olwen’s ability to effectively use Ploy skills, both Swift Sparrow and Fury make for suitable alternatives at the cost of a slightly weaker offense. Desperation is once again the core of the build, as it allows Olwen to hit four times and activate her Special without the risk of getting killed on the counterattack.
Should one choose to not run Life and Death, Olwen remains a suitable user of Ploy skills in both her C and Sacred Seal slot. Spd Ploy and Res Ploy are particularly good choices in accentuating the damage output of both Olwen and her teammates against the affected targets. Last but not least, Attack +3 and Speed +3 both remain great Sacred Seal options if one desires to further increase Olwen’s damage output.
Introduction
Among the two mage knights released carrying the coveted Dire Thunder tome, Olwen has often been seen in the shadow of her brother, Reinhardt. Statwise, she mostly sports the makings of an offensive mage with the combination of high Speed and low-end overall bulk. Her main problem stems from her Attack; at a base value of only 26, Olwen is considerably weaker in raw damage compared to her competition such as Reinhardt, L’Arachel, and Spring Catria.
Despite her lack of Attack, she makes up for it with her aforementioned high Speed. Not only does this open up the opportunity to potentially quad with Dire Thunder, it also makes her an exceptional Blade tome user. In addition to this, her relatively high Resistance makes her a solid user of Ploy skills giving her longevity in supporting both herself and her team. Unfortunately, her defensive potential is quite low overall. At a base value of only 54, Olwen’s physical bulk is very poor. This makes her often rely on Desperation in order to avoid counterattacks from Distant Counter units, as they will likely take her out in only a single hit. Despite her relatively high Resistance, her magical bulk is nothing impressive either at a base value of 64.
Despite these flaws, Olwen is a solid offensive mage that can perform well both on and off a cavalry team and a solid benefactor to her allies through her ability to effectively utilize Ploy skills.
Strengths
Great Speed
At a base value of 34, Olwen is tied at the second highest Speed out of any cavalry unit. This is key in securing kills, especially when utilizing a Blade tome.
Dire Thunder
Although not as consistent of a user as Reinhardt, Olwen can still make effective use out of this powerful weapon by thanks to her high Speed giving her to potential to quad attack.
Cavalry
In addition to her superior mobility, Olwen has access to class-exclusive buffs such as Hone Cavalry.
Weaknesses
Low Attack
At a base value of only 26 Attack, Olwen lacks in the raw damage department and often requires team support such as Hone Cavalry in order to secure kills. This is especially prevalent when utilizing Dire Thunder.
Terrible Physical Bulk
With only 54 physical bulk, Olwen is highly susceptible to getting killed in only a single hit by many physical attackers. In addition to this, her puny 34 HP leaves her open to almost any user of Panic Ploy.
Cavalry
Cavalry status comes with its disadvantages. In addition to forests and trenches making it more difficult to navigate maps, Olwen has an innate weakness to cavalry effective weapons.
Team Options
Counters
Due to her exceptionally poor physical bulk, Olwen is quick to break in the face of physical damage. As such, strong Defense-targeting attackers will make short work of her sparse bulk. In addition to this, magically bulky green units also pose a major threat, as they will be able to easily tank Olwen’s attacks while dealing massive damage in return. Last but not least, Olwen’s status as a cavalry unit gives her an innate weakness to opponents carrying class-effective weapons.
-
Strong Physical Attackers: Powerful physical attackers such as Raven, Cordelia, Bride Cordelia, and Minerva all make short work of Olwen’s meager physical bulk.
-
Magically Bulky Greens: Julia, Deirdre, Myrrh, and Halloween Henry can easily wall off Olwen’s damage thanks to their high Resistance and Weapon Triangle advantage. In addition to this, Julia and Deirdre can mitigate Olwen’s damage output even further by ignoring Hone/Fortify buffs that she receives.
- Effective Weapons: Anti-Cavalry weapons, both physical and magic alike will easily tear through Olwen’s health bar due to their high damage multiplier. Common users include Rhajat, Micaiah, Gray, and Gerome.

Locked behind 5* and lacking in attack compared to her infamous brother, Olwen is very often overlooked. I got Olwen back when Delthea was first added to the game in my desperate attempt to get the powerhouse mage. Considering I had an Attack Boon Reinhardt, Olwen never saw any use and I decided to change that.
In this build, Olwen is meant to abuse Watersweep, and is, in my opinion, the only unit who really can without crippling their ability to Quad attack. Most units who are fast enough to use it to duel other ranged attackers are Bridal Corelia, Brave Lyn, and various fast mages. Unfortunately, the two archers mentioned above are quad attackers and the fast mages like doubling their enemy.
Dire Thunder's two users aren't exactly amongst the fastest units. Reinhardt is at a miserable neutral 18 with Dire Thunder equipped and a speed neutral Olwen hits 29 with Dire Thunder. This makes Olwen the better user of Dire Thunder+Watersweep/Windsweep because she's just fast enough to make use of it.
Rather than taking Death Blow like her older brother, Olwen takes Life and Death. This is preferred over Swift Sparrow and Darting Blow as Swift Sparrow is extremely rare, being locked behind 3 5* exclusive units, one of them being event locked, and the other being lost in colorless hell. Life and Death completely negates Olwen's speed loss from Dire Thunder. Allowing her to hit 34 neutral speed. With Phantom Speed and Hone Cavalry, this allows her to hit 45 speed, thus cancelling a counter attack from most speedy mages with speed boons and Life and Death (if they aren't running the speed+1 seal or are merged). This also allows her to hit 40 attack (43 attack with a boon). Thus coming closer to matching Rein's attack power. While he has more raw power, Olwen can still cause some serious damage. Especially if she has any buffs.
For specials, Moonbow is taken for how quickly it charges, however, Draconic Aura works equally as well and is the special I usually prefer with brave weapon units.
Alternatively, Galeforce can be taken. An explanation provided by my friend explains why: Running either
Desperation or Sweep, QP Moonbow probably works best in Arena teams, but as an offensive unit, Galeforce is a better choice, especially in Tempest Trials. And combined with her Sweep skill allows her to Quad enemies that she normally woudn't be able to (super fasts) and kill more units without needing a dancer. True, most speedsters are fragile but that ain't the point. She's meant to Counter high-speed units. Rein's there to take out the slower ones that Olwen would normally Quad.
Good teammates for Olwen include Reinhardt, any other brave weapon user, anyone with Cavalry buff skills. The Renais Twins (Eirika and Ephraim) are also good for Olwen. Dancers also are wonderful for Olwen.
Counters to Rein also counter Olwen and with her physical defenses lacking and her HP being as low as it is, anything that gets a hit on her will likely kill her.

Despite the fact that Olwen has a respectable 30 Res without buffs, her low HP pool offsets her ability to take magic hits somewhat especially if she's a -HP or -Res, thus -Def is her preferred bane. With this in mind, keeping Life and Death on a +Spd Olwen, will further bolster her offensive capabilities while running her defenses to the gutter as she will opt to stay out of combat aside from initiation. Ardent Sacrifice is her Assist of choice to bring her into Desperation range.
Fully buffed Olwen still reaches a respectable 31 Res which does allow her to take a hit from a red mage if need be. Some might argue that Fury will allow her to do that better as she reaches 39 Res, but that would be later offset by the fact that they take 6 damage post combat.
Draconic Aura is her special of choice for more consistent damage output, and the fact that cooldown count for Specials aren't of too much concern for Blade tome wielders. With full buffs Olwen reaches 54 attack granting her 16 extra damage off of Draconic Aura. In the same train of though Olwen reaches 52 speed with full buffs.
Reinhardt generally pulls Dire Thunder of better than Olwen unless she also receives Goad Cavalry buffs, so it is entirely possible to use her as your main Dire Thunder attacker assuming she gets the buffs she needs. For the most part though, Olwen will be offensively inferior to her brother outside of Horse Emblem teams.

Dire Thunder is the magic version of a brave weapon. It attacks twice, but for the cost of 5 speed. It's broken on Reindhart, but Olwen needs a bit of work. This can be switched out for Blarblade, although you need to sacrifice 20000 feathers to get it.
Reposition is part of Olwen's base kit and is probably the best assist skill for her. It's not worth using 225 SP on getting another assist skill for her.
Olwen suffers from "Low attack syndrome" which means her attack is horrifyingly bad. At 26 neutral attack. With a -Atk Olwen, they're equivelant to Odin, one of the worst characters in the game. So the best way to resolve that is by buffing it by using Olwen's high enough resistance. Using Glacies, Olwen's attack is buffed by 24 which beats out Dragon Fang's 18. Although using Moonbow or Luna might be better, those require circumstances where Olwen actually does damage to work effectively. Using Glacies in my opinion is a better option.
Triangle Adept can help overcome Olwen's horrible attack; but only to red units. This is good because now she's a red killer and can kill more reds with ease. This also means she's more vulnerable to Green units. Life and Death can also help and Fury as well with probably less horrible consequences, but the attack boost is smaller; yet applies to all colors.
Desperation is usually overkill. It's rarely used on my Olwen tbh. Vantage can be used to further assault red mages and help kill archers or dagger users with low res.
Threaten Res is probably ideal if you want to deal extra damage to bow and dagger users. Olwen can beat a Brave Bow Takumi and Jaffar with Threaten Res. Olwen leaves Setsuna and Klein terribly injured. Without Threaten Res, Olwen is seriously injured from Takumi and doesn't kill him.

With a 50/39 offensive spread with a single hone cavalry, Olwen will reach the same spread as neutral LnD Bridelia buffed by Eirika, the main differences is that she is on a horse, can actually tank a hit with that build, and
deals magical damage.
Pair her with a red horse that can take out green tome users and you have a very strong dual-core that can take out most of the meta
She usually OHKO every reds, every non +res blue tomes, every common lances (even effie!), and ORKO every common non TA axes (she needs Desperation to take out hector)
However she is still walled by Julia, and Fae (reminds me someone...) but she can actually kill sonya with desperation
Iceberg is usually the best choice as it add 17 damage on hit (Luna will deal less 95% of the time) and will be ready for the next initiation or if any ranged unit attacks her if you fail to quad
LnD 3 works too to transform her as a pure glasscannon that can even take out most of +res blue tome users but she loses the ability tank swords, some lances and some green tomes like Julia. LnD is needed to have fairly the same offensive power in a non horse emblem team. Draconic aura would be the best special (avoid Luna unless in Infernal maps, as most arena threats has less than 30 res)
