Boons
-
+SPD: As with most Blade tome users, Olwen’s Speed is her most important stat and the best boon that she can receive. It allows her to maximize her damage output by securing additional follow-up attacks.
-
+ATK: Attack is another great choice of boon, as it will further increase her raw damage output. In particular, this is more effective against slow units with extraordinary bulk.
Neutral
-
RES: Although a boon in Resistance can increase her ability to effectively utilize Ploys, it is of lower priority compared to Attack and Speed. Lowering Resistance is discouraged, as it is a superbane and can be detrimental to her survivability when taking magical damage.
Banes
-
-DEF: Defense is Olwen’s weakest stat and the best bane that she can receive, as dropping it further will hardly hinder her performance
- -HP: A bane in HP is comparable to a bane in Defense but takes away from her overall bulk, making it less desirable than the aforementioned.

This set aims to maximize the continuous damage output of Olwen’s personal weapon, Thunderhead. Due to this purely offensive playstyle, Olwen appreciates boons in Speed and Attack in order to secure additional kills on initiation. Additional Speed allows her to secure more follow-up attacks which is extremely important in maximizing the damage output of a Blade Tome user. Meanwhile, a boon in Attack grants her more raw damage and is more effective against slow bulky targets. In particular, this can be the deciding factor in her matchup against Winter Tharja.
For her Assist, Ardent Sacrifice has fantastic synergy with Desperation. Olwen’s physical bulk of 53 makes her susceptible to getting killed in only one hit; by dropping her HP without the need to engage in combat, Olwen can safely get into Desperation’s 75% HP threshold. Otherwise, any choice of movement skill such as Reposition will make for a suitable Assist.
Glimmer is a great choice of Special on any Blade Tome user, as it scales with the additional damage from her weapon’s effect. In addition to this, Thunderhead doesn’t have the Special cooldown penalty of a standard Blade Tome. This allows her to activate 2 cooldown Special such as Glimmer during her first round of combat. Alternatively, Moonbow can be used as a more effective option against units with extraordinarily high Resistance such as Julia and Deirdre.
Olwen’s native Swift Sparrow is the premium choice of A skill, as it provides a strong boost to her offensive stats on initiation without the need to forego anything else. A higher risk higher reward option is Life and Death, as it boosts her offensive stats even higher at the cost of severely damaging her overall bulk. This makes her even more susceptible to getting OHKO’d by both physical and magic damage alike. Finally, Fury makes for another solid choice by making it easier to get into Desperation range by increasing her overall bulk at the cost of a marginally weaker offense. In addition to this, the boost in Resistance improves her ability to effectively utilize Ploy skills.
Desperation is the cornerstone of any glass cannon mage; once in the HP range, Olwen will be able to safely perform follow-up attacks without the risk of getting killed on the counterattack. As for C skills, Olwen can potentially make effective use of Res Ploy depending on her Resistance. This increases the magic damage output of both her and her allies against the affected target. A more team-synergetic option is Hone Cavalry, as it allows Olwen to be a benefactor on a cavalry-centric team which she is most effective on. Otherwise, the C slot can be replaced with whatever will accommodate her team.
Last but not least, Heavy Blade makes for a fantastic option for her Sacred Seal. Thanks to Thunderhead’s damage scaling property, Heavy Blade’s consistent activation allows Olwen to activate her Specials within a shorter time-frame. This pairs particularly well when combined with Desperation and 2 charge Specials such as Glimmer and Moonbow, as Olwen will be able to activate them every single round of combat. Alternatively, both Speed +3 and Attack +3 make for good picks in order to give Olwen a solid offensive stat boost.

Sacred Seal: Heavy Blade / Atk Ploy / Res Ploy 3
This build looks to give Olwen an additional role as a strong support unit in exchange for continuous combat. In addition to Attack and Speed, Resistance also makes for a suitable boon in order to have Olwen better utilize Ploy skills. Draconic Aura is a great choice of Special in order to maximize damage output, particularly when used together with Heavy Blade in order to activate it in Olwen’s first round of combat. Glimmer can be used as a more consistent albeit, less powerful alternative.
Fury is a fantastic option for this set, as the boost it provides increases her damage output, overall bulk, and ability to effectively utilize Ploy skills. Olwen’s native Swift Sparrow also makes for a suitable option, as it provides a solid boost to her offensive stats on initiation. As for B skills, Chill Res is a great choice for increasing both Olwen’s damage output as well as the overall support she can provide to her team. While Chill Res can massively increase magic damage against the affected target, it is not always consistent. This is due to it targeting the unit with the highest Resistance and not necessarily the unit with highest magic bulk.
At a base value of 30 with Fury, Olwen’s Resistance is high enough to make effective use of Ploy skills. When successfully landed, Spd Ploy makes it easier for both Olwen and her teammates to perform follow-up attack against the affected target while landing Atk Ploy will reduce their damage output. If not already being utilized in the C slot, Atk Ploy can also be moved to the Sacred Seal slot. Although Res Ploy may seem redundant when used together with Chill Res, the difference comes from the units they target. Res Ploy will often hit opponents with low Resistance while Chill Res aims straight for the unit with the highest Resistance.
Introduction
Olwen’s second iteration having newfound power is an understatement. By introducing the first ever personal Blade Tome in the form of Thunderhead, Olwen sets a new standard for damage scaling magic. In addition to having slightly more might, it completely removes the Special cooldown penalty tied to generic Blade Tomes. This allows Olwen to activate powerful Specials more frequently, massively increasing her potential damage output.
Statwise, Olwen boasts an impressive 30/35 Atk/Spd as a cavalry mage. When combined with Thunderhead and class-exclusive buffs such a Hone Cavalry, Olwen’s damage output becomes nuclear. However, heavily favoring offensive stats will put a strain elsewhere. At a base value of 53, Olwen’s physical bulk is downright terrible. This makes her often rely on Desperation in order to avoid counterattacks from Distant Counter units, as they will likely take her out in only a single hit. In addition to this, her magical bulk is nothing impressive either at a base value of 61.
Regardless, Olwen is a glass cannon in every sense of the word and a fantastic one a that. Her personal tome: Thunderhead, access to class-exclusive buffs, and a great offensive statline make her one of the most powerful offensive mages around.
Strengths
Thunderhead
Thunderhead is an incredible personal weapon. By removing the Special penalty tied to standard Blade Tomes, Olwen is able to activate more powerful Specials more frequently.
Great Speed
At a base value of 35, Olwen is tied at the highest Speed out of any cavalry unit. This is key in effectively utilizing her personal tome, as a follow-up attack is needed in order to secure kills.
Cavalry
In addition to her superior mobility, Olwen has access to class-exclusive buffs such as Hone Cavalry.
Weaknesses
Abysmal Physical Bulk
With only 53 physical bulk, Olwen is highly susceptible to getting killed in only a single hit by many physical attackers. In addition to this, her puny 34 HP leaves her open to almost any user of Panic Ploy.
Cavalry
Although being a cavalry unit has its advantages, it can also be a detriment. On top of forests and trenches making it harder to navigate maps, Olwen has an innate weakness to cavalry effective weapons.
Team Options
Counters
Olwen is a bleeding heart when it comes to tanking physical hits. As such, strong Defense-targeting attackers will make short work of her meager bulk. Magically bulky red units also pose a major threat, as they will be able to easily tank Olwen’s attacks while dealing massive damage in return. In addition to this, users of skills such as Divine Naga and Dull Ranged will completely ignore Hone/Fortify buffs that Olwen receives. This severely mitigates her damage output against them. Finally, Olwen’s status as a cavalry unit gives her an innate weakness to opponents carrying class-effective weapons.
-
Strong Physical Attackers: Powerful physical attackers such as Ayra, Cordelia, Bride Cordelia, and Elincia all make short work of Olwen’s pathetic physical bulk.
-
Magically Bulky Reds: Sanaki, Winter Tharja, and Katarina can all wall off Olwen’s damage thanks to their high Resistance and Weapon Triangle advantage.
-
Buff Ignoring Skills: Julia and Deirdre can neuter Olwen’s damage output by ignoring Hone/Fortify buffs that she receives. This also applies to any unit running the skill Dull Ranged.
- Effective Weapons: Anti-Cavalry weapons, both physical and magic alike will easily tear through Olwen’s health bar due to their high damage multiplier. Common users include Micaiah, Rhajat, Gray, and Gerome.

When I saw that there was an Olwen that didn't suck, I got really happy. Indeed, she does not suck. On a tactics team, she is truly unrelenting. I went for L and D over SS mainly so she would have a higher arena score.

My most terrifying mage. On a cavalry team, she can dish out monstrous amounts of damage. With a hone cavalry buff and Reinhardt next to her, (they have an S support) she can double a +spd Karla with even spd wave active. She mows down everything in her path.

Atk Boon is also an option, but her being a Blade Tome but better, I'd go full speed, because she still reaches 44 atk, that will be 48 with swift sparrow and this way she has 41spd, 45with swift sparrow, both pretty solid numbers, and, like I said earlier, this is a blade tome, that means it is a crime not to fit her in a horse emblem team that can give her hone and fortify cavalry, that resultin on +24 additional damage and having 54 atk and 51 spd on initiation, Glimmer is the best option for a blade tome, no doubt here.
And last but not least, if you want to get into desperation range more safely, you can go with Fury 3, but that also reduces your damage and speed by 2, or if you are a rebel, forget her expensive and precious swift sparrow and go all guns blazing with Life and Death 3.

"Run in the Mill" Bladetome build for Olwen. +spd, -res can work too as long she with a Horse Emblem team or Mixed Tactics team. As for seals, Atk 3 seal is good for buff team that can give plus +6. While buffs that are Plus +4 and drive/spur works with Spd 3 seal.
