Boons
-
+SPD: Very powerful, as Nowi can easily boost her Speed enough to avoid a huge number of doubles, resulting in significantly less incoming damage. It also allows her to consider attacking on Player Phase against slower enemies.
-
One important consideration is that if fighting at very high tiers in Arena, then Nowi’s typical opponents are incredibly difficult to avoid doubles from; skills like Bold Fighter and Ephraim’s refined Siegmund effect make Speed a useless stat, meaning that it may be worth considering taking a -SPD bane instead.
-
-
+DEF: As sword units get stronger and stronger, a +DEF boon gets better and better for Nowi, particularly now that Speed matters much less at the highest tiers of Arena.
-
+ATK: While Nowi has decent Attack, a +ATK boon actually isn’t quite as good as it may seem, compared to a +SPD or +DEF boon. +ATK is mainly recommended for a one-shot build, but it will still be useful in any setup.
Neutral
-
RES: The presence of powerful red mages like Winter Tharja means that Nowi can no longer easily choose to dump her Resistance. The fact that it’s a superbane (-4 to the stat) only makes it worse, so it’s best to leave Nowi’s Resistance at neutral.
Banes
- -HP: Out of all of Nowi’s stats, her HP is the least important. The +5 HP gained from refining her weapon can easily compensate for the loss from the bane. If it is absolutely necessary to maintain Nowi’s HP (if running Infantry Pulse and/or Panic Ploy), then a -RES or -SPD bane is the next best option.

This is Nowi’s strongest and most consistent set, as it takes advantage of everything that makes her so powerful. This build gets increasingly stronger the higher one goes in the Arena tiers, as the increased prevalence of Bold Fighter makes it easier for Nowi to shut down enemy threats.
There are two primary choices for IVs for this build: +SPD/-HP and +DEF/-SPD (+DEF/-HP is fine too). The main consideration is the breadth of threats that Nowi is expected to tackle; for maximum coverage, +SPD is ideal, while +DEF maximizes Nowi’s ability to completely shut down physical threats. In either case, take the same Lightning Breath refine as the chosen boon.
Aether works significantly better with a +SPD build, as activating it in a single combat (if Nowi gets doubled with Steady Breath) will result in significantly less healing - it’s much better to avoid getting doubled, so that Aether will be ready for the next combat. Bonfire is a good budget alternative to Aether for a +SPD build, as it will activate on the second hit with no wasted potential. If running a -SPD setup, then Ignis will result in huge damage output with no downsides to overkill damage.
Steady Breath is a key component to this build, as it provides a strong +4 boost to Nowi’s Defense, while also significantly speeding up her Special charge rate during Enemy Phase. Fury is acceptable as a budget alternative, but keep in mind that Nowi loses a large amount of power without the accelerated Special charges from Steady Breath.
Guard is the major component that allows Nowi to safely and consistently tackle enemies with powerful Specials like Ayra and Zelgius. By preventing them from rapidly charging their Specials, Guard allows Nowi to negate all possible danger. Pair Guard with the Quick Riposte seal to ensure that Nowi can land doubles; her Speed isn’t high enough for her to double consistently otherwise. The damage lost from the lack of enemy Special activations more than makes up for any defenses Nowi doesn’t gain as a result of not being able to run Close Def or Distant Def as her seal.
If Nowi has good team support, or if simply looking for a more general-purpose setup, then she can still run Quick Riposte as a B skill and run either Close Def or Distant Def as her seal. She runs the risk of getting taken out by units like Ayra, Zelgius, and Mia; however, at lower Arena tiers, this typically isn’t much of an issue.

- Passive A: Fierce Stance / Fury
- Passive B: Vantage / Quick Riposte
- Passive C: Panic Ploy / Threaten Res / Varies with Team
- Sacred Seal: Attack +3 / Heavy Blade / Quick Riposte
An alternative method of handling powerhouse units like Ayra, Zelgius, and Mia is to simply stack as much Attack as possible. Nowi’s high Attack combined with her ability to target her enemy’s magical bulk means that she can easily stack enough Attack to wipe most low Resistance reds out in a single hit. This set works best with team support; all it really needs is a Hone Atk buff to significantly boost its efficiency. It also works exceptionally well for budget considerations; Fierce Stance and Panic Ploy are clearly not budget-friendly, but replacing them with Fury and Threaten Res won’t massively impact Nowi’s capabilities.
Since this is an Attack stacking build, Glimmer pairs very well as it capitalizes on the build’s goal of maximizing damage output in a single hit. Fierce Stance grants the maximum amount of Attack while staying consistently active, but it can be replaced with Fury on a budget. Keep in mind that every point of Attack lost can result in Nowi failing to secure a KO; plan ahead with Ally Support and Attack buffs for best results.
Vantage works exceptionally well in this build, as the build relies on a single massive hit to try to KO enemies. Quick Riposte will also work for better matchups against units that Nowi can’t KO in one hit, but it does make it rather dangerous for Nowi if she has to take on multiple enemies.
An Attack +3 seal maximizes Nowi’s damage output, but it can be replaced by either the Heavy Blade or Quick Riposte seals if preferred. Heavy Blade works well if running Quick Riposte as Nowi’s B slot, as it allows her to activate Glimmer on her second hit; it also allows Nowi to consider running Draconic Aura instead of Glimmer, since the increased Special charge allows her to easily activate it when doubled. The Quick Riposte seal works well if running Vantage, as it gives Nowi strong coverage regardless of her current HP percentage.

With the introduction of Falchion refines, dragon teams have more issues with Falchions than ever before. In particular, Alm is now a monstrously powerful user who is fully capable of wiping out entire teams of dragons if they are not prepared for him. This setup allows Nowi to easily handle all Falchion users, including Alm, while retaining a good amount of general coverage.
IVs are not super important for this build; pretty much any combination of the recommended boons and banes will work. Regardless of choice, pick the breath weapon refine that corresponds to the chosen boon.
Glimmer works best due to the specialized nature of this build, but Bonfire can work if looking for more general coverage (i.e. more than just red units).
Triangle Adept pairs very well with Swordbreaker to ensure that Nowi will completely destroy sword threats, including Falchion users. If this feels like overkill, or if worried about the highly uncommon Cancel Affinity sword, then both Steady Breath and Fury are fully functional.
The Quick Riposte seal is important to allow Nowi to retain general coverage over non-sword units. This is a particularly important consideration if not running Triangle Adept; if expecting Nowi to take on units like archers, lances, and red mages, then she needs to be able to double. The Close Def seal can be taken instead for maximum overkill if one really, really hates swords (and the rest of the team has good coverage already, as is likely the case with a full dragon team).
Introduction
Ever since the introduction of weapon refinery, dragons have been a force to be reckoned with. Nowi stands out as not only one of the best dragons, but also easily one of the best blue units in the game. The reason for this is her power and versatility; the combination of a refined breath weapon’s adaptive damage, ability to run Steady Breath/Quick Riposte with Distant Counter, and her strong amount of mixed bulk means that Nowi has incredible coverage. Not only does she easily take out a huge number of enemies, but she can even do so while taking minimal damage herself.
Unfortunately, Nowi’s strength comes at a literal cost; her optimal build is incredibly expensive and high investment, as skills like Aether and Steady Breath can be hard to come by. She also has a number of counters that can make it difficult for her; her bulk cannot withstand effective damage.
Given the proper investment (or not, since her budget builds are still extremely potent), Nowi can really shine in any team. She even has good BST and availability, meaning that she is an excellent candidate for long-term merging. Overall, Nowi is a powerful unit that can be consistently relied upon to carry more than her own weight.
Strengths
Powerful Stat Spread
Thanks to weapon refinery, Nowi no longer has to put up with any glaring weaknesses in her stats; it’s rather easy to build her in such a way that she’s strong all around.
Adaptive Damage
The ability to use refined breath weapons means that not only does Nowi already hit hard due to her decent Attack stat, but she actually hits significantly harder than she may initially appear do to being able to target the lower of the Def/Res stats against ranged enemies.
Lightning Breath
While all dragons can use it, Lightning Breath’s power cannot be understated. Not only does it have built-in Distant Counter, allowing for the Steady Breath/Distant Counter combo, but it can also be refined, granting a strong boost to Nowi’s stats.
Good Availability
In addition to having good BST, Nowi is also available to be summoned at 4* rarity. She even comes with Lightning Breath in her base kit! These factors make Nowi a prime choice for long-term merge considerations.
Dragon
Nowi’s status as a dragon means that she can benefit from dragon-exclusive buffs like Hone Dragons and Fortify Dragons, which allows her to easily fit into a dragon team that features incredible coverage and staying power.
Weaknesses
Anti-Dragon Weapons
As a blue unit, Nowi will find it extremely difficult to survive even a single hit from the Naga and Divine Naga tomes that Julia and Deirdre wield. She can even struggle against Falchions (particularly Alm, with refinement) despite color advantage, unless specifically built to handle them.
Infantry
While Nowi’s status as a dragon means that she has access to the powerful dragon-exclusive buffs that other infantry lack, she still suffers from the same problems as other infantry. Namely, her movement pales in comparison to cavalry and fliers, and she is susceptible to effective damage from Poison Dagger users.
Heavy Investment for Optimal
While Nowi has great budget build options, the fact remains that her optimal setups are very high investment; Aether and Steady Breath can be very difficult to come by.
Team Options
Counters
- Strong Greens: While Nowi can often take on green units, the stronger ones like Fallen Robin (M), Hector (LA), Raven, and Myrrh can make short work of her.
- Anti-Dragon Weapons: Julia and Deirdre can easily take out Nowi due to the combination of effective damage and color advantage, but even a Falchion user like Alm or Lucina can take out Nowi if unprepared for it.
- Debuffers: Nowi’s stat spread is one of her greatest strengths, and units that can debuff them can effectively hinder her effectiveness; some good examples are Gunnthrá, Spring Sharena, Lute, and Soren.
- Preventing Counters: As Nowi is almost entirely Enemy Phase-oriented, units that can prevent her from counterattacking can be extremely difficult to deal with. Firesweep users generally aren’t a huge issue due to Nowi’s good physical bulk, but the strongest ones like Tana, Cordelia, and Brave Lyn can still potentially deal enough damage to knock Nowi out of Quick Riposte’s HP threshold, which is problematic.
- In particular, staff units running a Wrathful Staff/Dazzling Staff combo like Elise, Priscilla, and Lucius can devastate Nowi; not only can they deal good damage to her, but they can also apply potent debuffs like Gravity, or even more damage with Pain.

This is a build I'd thought up strictly for the purpose of helping your friends in GC.
This builds main focus is to buff and debuff as well as some KO potential.
Nowi's defensive stat spread are enough that she would be able to take a few blows from the enemy (with the exception of well built 'effective against' units). This provides her the opportunity to facetank or initiate combat with the enemy, buffing all ally units within 2 spaces by 5 to all stats as well as reducing all enemy speed and attack by 7. Doing so will provide a suitable window for the player to cleanup with their own units.
Nowi's Bonfire/Distant counter/Quick Riposte are in place so she may kill opposing units in enemy phase should you choose to use her as a facetank. Her minimal speed at a neutral 27 provide more of an advantage in this scenario. It allows the enemy unit to double Nowi and for Nowi to double as well, having Nowi's Bonfire proc on her second turn, killing or badly injuring the enemy unit.

Getting into this you must first know that this Nowi set is designed in mind to be used on a arena defense team. Other skills could be changed if one plans to use it outside of arena defense.
Starting with her weapon for this set really any of the breaths would work. However, I would personally recommend Dark Breath+ or Water Breath+ with spd refine. The reason I have Dark Breath+ is for the debuff which is really helpful on arena defense. Water Breath+ would also work great since it will give Nowi and extra 4 res and def on enemy phase (since she won't likely be getting hit during player phase)
Her assist is a rally skill to prevent the units from overextending on defense. Any other assist would work depending on what you are using her for.
Now her special is where you may be thinking...Why? Well I run miracle simply to be an evil monster. So for that moment you think you've killed her she lives on 1 HP. Aether is a more practical special for most people, and obviously you could also use ignis or bonfire if you'd like. All up to you.
Now her lovely passive skills. A is distant counter to make up for the fact that we aren't running lightning breath so she can still beat mages, daggers, and archers. Now if you are running lightning breath for whatever reason you can change the A skill to something like steady breath, warding breath, etc. Her B skill is the meat of this whole set. Windsweep. For those who don't know what windsweep does if unit initiates and they are faster than the target the target can't counter attack (if they are using a lance, sword, or axe that is) In my eyes this gives Nowi a massive advantage on arena defense because the most common way to deal with a Nowi is to place a strong green unit to tank, and kill her. Now she won't die because they can't counter attack and give another opportunity for an ally to come and take out that green. It is also an uncommon skill that most people don't know what it does so it catches them off guard. Finally, the C skill. I run Atk Smoke to make her even harder to kill but any c skill would work as long as it complements the team. Last the sacred seal. I like Phantom Spd because it gives +5 Spd when the unit has a skill based off of speed, and every point of spd Nowi can get is helpful.
Now lets talk about her flaws. This set is by no means full proof, and there is plenty of units that could still beat her. The whole point of this set is to catch the opponent of guard, and throw them through a loop when there plans don't go accordingly. Anyways, to big units that will beat her are her dragon siblings. Myrrh and Legendary Tiki. Since windsweep doesn't work on dragonstones Myrrh and Leg Tiki can counter attack her when she attacks. Alm and other Falchion users can giver her a run for her money, but they can't tank her they have to make the move. Also Naga Tomes users may also do the trick but that is it.
If you actually read through all this thank you, and I hope it was helpful to you. Also, if you are wondering what team mates I use for this team it is Performing Arts Azura, Roy, and Katarina (I plan to swap Katarina out for Micaiah once I manage to pull one) so if you want to build around her you can use my team as a base if you'd like. But again thank you for reading.

Although this variant of Nowi is slightly different than the most common builds, she can actually be quite versatile with the +Res boon. She may not be able to specialize as well as +Def at physical tanking, or +Spd at avoiding doubles, but she has the capability to run Ploys extremely well against many powerful top-Tier units, which greatly contributes to her bulk. (Certain skills can be swapped out depending on what your team requires, and I will be mentioning them further on.)
Nowi can reach a solid 34 Def / 34 Res if the enemy initiates, before taking into account any merges, buffs, or in-combat skills. With an Atk Ploy 3 active, her effective Def and Res become 39 each. A standard +Def /-HP (or +Def / -Spd), Steady Breath, and Def-refined Nowi would reach 41 Def / 27 Res when the enemy initiates. When the two are compared, the Nowi that I suggested exchanges 2 Def for an additional 12 Res, which one may find useful.
For +Spd / -HP variants that run Spd-refine, Nowi reaches 33 Spd / 34 Def / 27 Res. Now, if one switches Atk Ploy 3 for Spd Ploy 3 for her C-Skill, then the +Res Nowi has an effective 32 Spd while maintaining her 34 Def / 34 Res. In exchange for 1 Spd, she gains 7 Res.
+Res Nowi can opt to double down on either her Def or Spd stat if she switches her Res-refined weapon for a Def-refined or Spd-refined one, respectively. 30 Res at base is good enough to Ploy against most of the advantageous match-ups that Nowi wants to take, such as Zelgius, Ayra, or Karla, or the plethora of units that like to take the -Res bane. To put into perspective her stats: Lightning Breath+ (+Def) with Steady Breath + Atk Ploy 3 + Close Def 3 gives Nowi an effective 45 Def / 41 Res against plenty of lower Res foes; meanwhile, Lightning Breath+ (+Spd) + Spd Ploy 3 and Drive Spd support from her team can put Nowi at an effective 38 - 44 Spd, depending on the number of allies with Drive Spd 2, while sporting her 34 Def / 30 Res. (Remember that all of these values assume a Nowi without any merges.)
The B-Skill was chosen because it was cheaper than promoting a unit for Quick Riposte 3, but one could run that skill and exchange the Seal slot for Distant Def 3, Close Def 3, or a different Ploy. If one prefers to keep Quick Riposte 3 in the Seal slot, but does not like running Renewal, then Guard, Vantage, or some sort of -Breaker skill can be used instead.
