IV Sets
Key stats worth increasing through nature if possible.
Complementary stats that matter, but not to the point of picking them over key stats for nature increase.
Relatively worthless stat that can safely be decreased through nature.

Since Nowi is such a versatile unit, many of her optimal IV sets vary build to build. In reality, Nowi's role as a Distant Counter tank requires the maintenance of all available stats and is made even harder due to the fact that Nowi has no obvious terrible stat to dump due to her base 163 BST.

  • +ATK amplifying damage output is always helpful, especially when Nowi is running Quick Riposte.
  • +DEF overall helps Nowi's ability to efficiently tank and survive physical threats like other blues and bow users.
  • +SPD helps Nowi escape some crucial doubles against some mid-high tier Speed units.

  • -HP takes away from Nowi's overall bulk and Panic Ploy potential, but retains all of her other excellent stats.
  • -RES while still painful, Resistance is Nowi's least used overall stat as she mainly wants to wall out physical damage dealing units.

With the addition of Steady Breath and the weapon refinery, Enemy Phase oriented dragons have skyrocketed in terms of strength and efficiency, and Nowi being no exception. Nowi's fantastic defensive spread and color make her a dangerous tank that can compete with the metagame's most lethal threats.

For IV's, it is suggested to focus on reinforcing Nowi's Attack or Defense to capitalize on her deadly Enemy Phase counterattacks and her overall survivability in a match. Because of the weapon refinery's favoring of defensive stats, consider picking +Def to boost her physical bulk by 4, ensuring her survival against difficult matchups. While Reposition is the standard movement assist that can never fail, inheriting a Dual Rally will give Nowi a slight boost in Arena points for those who are concerned with high scoring.

Aether works fantastically when paired with Steady Breath, as the reduced Special cooldown counterattacks Aether's long charge time. Also, the self-healing and increased damage Aether brings makes Nowi a more self-reliant tank that needs less team support to thrive. Players looking for options with less investment should look into combining Bonfire or Ignis with Fury as they are relatively cheap skills that synergize well with Nowi's role as an Enemy Phase tank.

On the B slot, Quick Riposte is an almost mandatory skill as it guarantees Nowi a second hit when counterattacking, regardless of the Speed difference. This follow-up hit helps rush out Specials which increases Nowi's damage tremendously. C skills are always team dependent, but Nowi's high HP pool make her a great Panic Ploy candidate which allows her to be a better overall tank, especially if the opponent stacks Rallies, Hones, or Fortifies.

If one decides to use Quick Riposte as a Sacred Seal instead, another fantastic option would be running a defensive B skill like Guard. Disrupting the enemy's Special cooldown timing helps Nowi secure matchups against powerful units that primarily rely on their Special to deal damage to her. Even though she has the weapon triangle advantage, an unprepared Nowi can take fatal damage from a Black Luna, Regnal Astra, or the potent Wo Dao + Wrath combo.

Last but not least, there is a multitude of Sacred Seal options for Nowi as many of them are designed for defensive rather than offensive play. The most prominent would be Distant Def, which solidifies Nowi's win against Brave Lyn and Reinhardt. If the +6 boost to Defense and Resistance isn't enough to keep her from getting KO'd, however, Deflect Missile and Deflect Magic are situational but good alternatives. Atk Smoke is another fantastic choice that can single-handedly ruin any offensive play the enemy AI can make against your team. Finally, Close Def will secure her matchups against almost all melee opponents barring bulky green units.

An old-fashioned but completely viable Nowi build, this set of skills makes her a specialized tank rather than a jack-of-all-trades. Almost any IV's on Nowi are usable barring -ATK, but the choice of +SPD patches up Nowi's middling base Speed and helps deny some lethal doubles. As previously stated, Reposition or any movement assist are good options, but Dual Rallies should be picked if Arena points are a primary concern.

The addition of Triangle Adept secures almost all of Nowi's matchups against red units, even Falchion users. While this makes her worse at tanking blue units and ruins any possibility of winning matchups against green units, Triangle Adept Nowi is in no ways weak -- she simply requires additional team support to truly thrive. Quick Riposte is a solid choice for all Enemy Phase tanks, but a Breaker skill can result in a great success if you want Nowi to hard counter a certain type of unit.

Panic Ploy denies enemy buffs which can be vital when tanking damage from opponents that have an even or winning matchup against Nowi. Threaten Atk can be used as a budget-friendly option that will also help Nowi's survivability.

With the introduction of 2.0 and weapon refinery, all dragons got an early Christmas present in the form of breath upgrades. These upgrades include a noticeable increase to a stat, but more importantly, also adds the effect of weakness-seeking damage on ranged foes. Simply put, if the ranged enemy you are currently engaged in combat with has lower Defense compared to Resistance, a refined breath weapon will target that stat instead. This one change swings almost all of Nowi's matchups against high Resistance low Defense bow and tome users completely in her favor making combating her even more difficult.

Given that the power of dragons were already surging with skills powerful skills such as Steady Breath being inheritable, and defensive Sacred Seals becoming more accessible, it should be no surprise that when all three factors are added together it results in a monster of a unit.

As for the unit herself, Nowi is a blue dragon with well-rounded stats across the board due to her boosted trainee BST of 163. She specializes in tanking physical hits, but is more than capable of scrapping with magic users because of her generally high bulk. Nowi has middling Speed and Resistance, but generally has well-distributed stats everywhere else. Overall, she is a fantastic unit with no glaring weaknesses and plenty of impressive strengths.

Incredible bulk and damage soak

Nowi's 45 HP, 30 Defense, and 27 Resistance makes her tough to take down, especially when combined with her amazing combat prowess.

Great ATK for tanking and countering

34 base Attack means Nowi can deliver devastating counterattacks with Quick Riposte and refined Lightning Breath.

Boosted BST and availability

With a boosted BST and availability as a 4 star unit, Nowi is an easy-to-build hero of whom investing in has a great payoff.

Vulnerable to doubling and magic damage

With only 27 Speed and Resistance, Nowi can (but not always will) have some trouble tanking a small amount of mages and fast green units.

Best A Skill locked away behind Brave Ike

This may sound nitpicky, but Steady Breath synergizes extremely well with Nowi as it expedites her Special charge, maximizing her counterattack damage output.

Given most player's limited resources, they may not be willing to fodder a Brave Ike (who is an excellent unit in his own right) to give Nowi her inarguably best A skill.

Team Options

Nowi's role as a physical/mixed tank makes her great on any team because of her flexibility and bulk. Her greatest need from a team is a green tome user counter and an axe check just to cover the weapon triangle. Any unit that buffs Nowi's stats are also appreciated.

  • Offensive Buffers: Linde and Delthea Dark Aura's gives Nowi +6 Attack, which is fantastic for improving her firepower when counterattacking.
  • Reds who can counterattack regardless of distance: Ryoma, Ike, and any other Distant Counter reds help deal with both pesky green tome users and bulky axe units.
  • Dancers: Azura, Olivia, Performing Inigo, and any other dancer provide more team support in positioning Nowi to safely tank physical hits.
  • Strong red tome users: Celica, Sanaki, Katarina, and others give simple weapon triangle coverage along with green tome counter
  • Dragons: Fae, Myrrh, Ninian, Adult Tiki, Young Tiki, and Female Corrin offer potential dragon synergy (Fortify / Hone Dragons) and color coverage.

Very few units give Nowi trouble because of her excellent stat allocation and usage of skills, but since green units are still effective against blue, Nowi still has her weaknesses.

  • Tanky melee greens: Dorcas, Hector, Valentine Hector, Fae, and Brave Ike are able to take all the punishment Nowi has to offer and KO her in return.
  • Green effective damage dealers: Julia and Deirdre's ability to counter Nowi amounts to simple math: Color Advantage + (Divine) Naga =  Fried Dragon.
  • Situational Counters: Reinhardt can only sometimes counter Nowi as the Deflect Magic seal flips this matchup back into Nowi's favor.
