IV Sets
Key stats worth increasing through nature if possible.
Complementary stats that matter, but not to the point of picking them over key stats for nature increase.
Relatively worthless stat that can safely be decreased through nature.

Nowi's IVs depend on what you'd like her to do. For a general all-around tank, +spd is wonderful as it helps her to prevent many units from doubling her who otherwise would, such as Kagero, Takumi, and Y Tiki. This also enables her to double units like Chrom, Ephraim, Eldigan, and A Tiki for securing player-phase KOs. With a defensive boon, Nowi has more ability to counter and kill Brave Lyn and other menacing brave archers, as well as high attack brave melee units. She will happily trade her Res stat for either of these, though a special case can be made for a -spd build with Quick Riposte- provided she's tanky enough for it.

Ignis C Threaten Res 3
SP1,745SDistant Def 3

Show Explanation/Analysis

- Preferred Nature: +Defense / -Speed
- Weapon: Lightning Breath+
- Assist: Reciprocal Aid / Reposition
- Special: Ignis / Aether
- A Slot: Steady Breath
- B Slot: Quick Riposte / Bowbreaker / Swordbreaker
- C Slot: Threaten Resistance
- Sacred Seal: Distant Def 3

The existence of Steady Breath (and the fact that it can be inherited to manaketes) is the lynchpin that keeps Nowi at the top of the Gamepress tier list. With this build, she survives optimal Brave Lyn and optimal Reinhardt and kills them both on counter. She dismantles Sigurd and is capable of baiting and killing the core of an entire offensive cavalry team provided she can get topped up on HP, which Reciprocal Aid will help her with. Her color typing and magical attacks are fantastic in matchups against the majority of the recent meta heroes (Ayra, Arden, Halloween Nowi, Sigurd) and her tankiness enables her to be a front line unit on maps with limited mobility.

Steady Breath is utilized both to mitigate the cooldown demerit of Lightning Breath+ and to maximize Nowi's offensive power. When paired with a +def IV and a Distant Defense Seal, her defense raises to 43 if being attacked from a distance, enabling her to proc Ignis for massive damage if she's being doubled.

Alternatively, you can run Aether for some quick healing. Note that Aether won't proc during her first combat, but it will be primed to go on the second, potentially allowing Nowi to counter kill one unit, and then kill a second and heal up on her next turn.

Quick Riposte synergizes with a -spd IV quite well and will force enemies to double her, resulting in Ignis procs and enemy phase KOs. If you're concerned about Lyn (who's LnD/Brave Bow set will kill Nowi without Distant Defense 3 seal and +def IV), you can run Bowbreaker instead, though this makes her a little more specialized as an anti-meta unit.

Threaten Res remains great on her. Anything left alive after Enemy Phase will be weakened for her attacks in player phase.

Ideally, Nowi can be run with Fortify Dragons on your team to further boost her tanking capabilities, but she doesn't necessarily need it with this build.

The One Map Wonder
Lightning Breath+ A Fury 3
Reposition B Quick Riposte 3
Budget: Quick Riposte 2
Moonbow C Threaten Res 3
SP1,685SQuickened Pulse

Show Explanation/Analysis
  • Preferred Nature: +Speed / -Resistance
  • Weapon: Lightning Breath+
  • Assist: Reposition / Reciprocal Aid / Flexible
  • Special: Moonbow
  • A Slot: Fury
  • B Slot: Quick Riposte / Desperation
  • C Slot: Threaten Resistance
  • Sacred Seal: Quickened Pulse/ Spd + 3 / Distant Def 3 / Brash Assault

Due to all of Nowi's stats being relatively decent, Fury is a fantastic skill for her that helps to tip the tides from 'decent' to 'amazing'. A +spd Nowi with Fury hits 33 speed (36 with seal), which is generally enough to avoid doubles from most units who threaten her, though it does not guarantee her many doubles herself. Still, not being doubled is very crucial, as it will help her to stay alive for longer, at the expense of a more lethal special skill.

Quick Riposte is important for her, as it ensures doubles against units who would initiate on her from any range. This, alongside a quickened pulse seal, would allow her to set off a Moonbow proc to further cripple the first unfortunate soul who attacks her.

This Nowi is the one map wonder because, while she is extremely lethal on both player and enemy phase, she requires some form of sustain to maintain her HP threshold, as Fury and Quick Riposte are at odds with one another. If she loses too much HP (due to Fury's 6 damage tick per engagement or through tanking too many hits) then QR will fail to proc. Because of this, you may want to consider running Reciprocal Aid to keep her HP topped off at the expense of her allies.

For some more sustainability, there's also the option of giving her the Desperation/Brash Assault seal combination. This makes her first few engagements a little more dangerous, as she won't be able to double the enemy with Quick Riposte, but Fury works in your favor here with how it allows Nowi to cut her own HP in every fight so that she can begin pseudo-brave attacking with the Brashperation combo. Bear in mind that this also hurts her overall tankiness, but it is a way to transform your dragon tank into a melee magical nuke in the span of just a few turns of combat.

Adept Thunder
Lightning Breath+ A Triangle Adept 3
Reposition B Lancebreaker 3
Moonbow C Threaten Res 3
SP1,625SSpeed +3

Show Explanation/Analysis
  • Preferred Nature: +Speed / -Resistance
  • Weapon: Lightning Breath+
  • Assist: Reposition / Flexible
  • Special: Moonbow
  • A Slot: Triangle Adept
  • B Slot: Lancebreaker / Swordbreaker
  • C Slot: Threaten Resistance
  • Sacred Seal: Spd + 3 / Distant Defense

The combination of Triangle Adept and Lancebreaker is potent and allows Nowi to neatly circumvent her weakness to falchions while amplifying her strengths on other reds and guaranteeing her vital lance KOs in this blue-heavy meta. This Nowi kills an entirely neutral, base-kit Lucina by 1 HP, meaning that there is little room for error- luckily, a surviving Lucina can't hope to do much against Nowi in return, even if she doubles. Unluckily, this has the aftereffect of making all of Nowi's green matchups significantly worse, which works against her number of advantageous encounters.

Lancebreaker is also an interesting option for her that helps her to deal with popular flier emblem units, such as Cordelia and Tana, though it can be replaced by Swordbreaker for further falchion coverage, or even Vantage if you want to make her pack more of a punch on enemy phase.

+spd IV and +spd seal will allow her to prevent doubles onto her which would otherwise be painful without Quick Riposte. You could make a case for Distant Defense or a Deflect seal instead for some ranged tanking- ultimately, it comes down to how you want to utilize her.

  • Weighted strongly in Arena
  • Ranged counterattack
  • Attacks res, a weak point for many enemies
  • Excellent bulk

  • Is also countered by dedicated Reinhardt counters
  • Low speed, meaning she will typically sustain doubles
  • Weak to Falchion users, who she should be able to counter

Nowi is a blue dragon with great stats and abilities that make her a counter to the current meta, particularly with the recent inclusion of the Steady Breath skill. Her high defense and passable res allows her to tank through archers and magic users alike before nuking them on the counterattack with an equally impressive attack. Her speed leaves something to be desired, but ultimately Nowi is a force to be reckoned with in the right player's hands. Her stats and abilities allow her to function as the frontline tank on your team and first defender against popular meta units such as Brave Lyn or Reinhardt, while simultaneously wiping the floor with almost any red unit in the game. Some care must be taken around Falchions and of course, Naga tomes, but other than that Nowi has only been made better by the recent additions to the metagame.

Like other dragons, she has an impressive stat total, coming in at 177. This helps to boost the ranking of Arena teams which feature her. She has a utility that's unique to dragon units in that she can effectively counterattack from any range, in addition to dealing magical damage, which many units are weak to. She has very little problem dealing with reds, blues, colorless, and even some greens, due to her magic based attack. She is also capable of finishing baited enemies off in player phase due to Threaten Res, and can singlehandedly take care of the majority of a typical enemy team.

Nowi's main advantage is her ability to run Steady Breath alongside a decent mixed bulk and potential for ranged counter. This enables her to survive any archer in the game and counterattack for massive damage. Her capabilities against melee units are much the same, to say nothing of her ability to also survive both red and blue magic. She's a potent mixed tank with impressive damage potential, and should be a unit to watch out for on the enemy team.

As an infantry dragon, Nowi has many unit-type weaknesses, including both Naga tomes, poison dagger, and all falchion users in the game. Additionally, if a unit is built to counter Reinhardt then it will typically counter Nowi as well, and with the prevalence of Reinhardt counters in the arena (such as high res green mages, particularly those running Triangle Adept), Nowi will find a unit built to counter her damage somewhat regularly.

Nowi's speed also makes it easier for other units to score doubles on her. While her high defenses tend to mitigate the impact of this, it's still something worth noting, particularly if she's going up against attacks that she's otherwise weak to- for example, a double attack from Lucina will spell the end for her. Because she is a blue unit, her lack of ability to deal with some reds can be seen as a big detriment to running her.

Team Options

Nowi functions as a mixed blue tank and a check for many popular meta units, however, she is not invincible. She requires someone who can help her cover her weaknesses-
a strong red unit such as Tiki A or Tiki Y to handle greens and Naga tomes would not go amiss here. In addition, the ability to be given a Fortify Dragons buff will vastly help her tanking ability, and so being run alongside a fellow dragon who has that C skill would do wonders for her. She may need the help of a non-dragon blue or red unit to deal with Falchions as well. Allies who can heal her or who have high HP pools to take advantage of her Reciprocal Aid can help her to singlehandedly deal with entire enemy teams..

Nowi is threatened first and foremost by Marth, Lucina, Alm and Chrom who all wield Falchions. The former two have enough speed to double attack and KO her, but Chrom trades about evenly. The next problem for Nowi are green units, most notably Hector, Deirdre and Julia. Hector is easy enough to avoid, but Julia and Deirdre have high resistance and KO her easily. Lastly, Kagero is a massive threat to her, double attacking and KO’ing her with ease.
