Boons
-
+ATK: With a middling 29 Attack, Mathilda will appreciate all the extra power she can get. An Attack boon serves as one of Mathilda’s better boon options to grant her some very beneficial extra offensive power.
-
+RES: Her Resistance is easily Mathilda’s strongest asset. With a Resistance boon, Mathilda’s already amazing magical bulk will be pushed even further and she will utilize Ploys with greater efficiency.
Neutral
-
HP: At 35, Mathilda has a rather unimpressive HP stat. HP makes for an overall good choice of bane, but as this hurts her magical bulk, keeping it neutral may be preferable.
-
SPD: Mathilda has an overall middling Speed stat of 32. While a Speed boon is a good option, both Attack and Resistance will provide her with more noticeable benefits.
Banes
- -DEF: Defense is the optimal choice of bane for an anti-mage build due to this stat having no effect on her magical bulk. If Mathilda will be fighting a mix of physical and magical foes, an HP bane may be preferable.

This set is designed to make the most of Mathilda’s best feature and turn her into a very effective magical counter.
For her boon and bane, Mathilda will want either a Resistance or Attack boon with Defense bane. Both Resistance and Attack have their merits as a boon and are about equal in desirability, so this will be a personal choice. For the weapon, lance fighters have access to Berkut’s Lance. This lance grants extra Resistance when attacked and is a staple choice for any lance fighter designed to fight magical foes. Refining it for either Attack or Resistance is advised. The Assist slot is open with practically anything working. Reposition is a great general use Assist for cavaliers. Moonbow makes for a great Special thanks to its low cooldown which can activate very consistently. Iceberg is another good choice thanks to Mathilda’s high Resistance.
Distant Counter is the best choice of A slot for this build. This skill allows Mathilda to counterattack against ranged foes. While this build can theoretically work without Distant Counter, this build will lose a lot of its appeal without it as Mathilda will be unable to defeat any magical foe on Enemy Phase besides dragons. For the B slot, Quick Riposte allows Mathilda to perform a guaranteed follow-up attack against whoever attacks her so long as she’s above 70% HP, helping her against fast mages who easily outspeed her. Alternatively, B Tomebreaker allows Mathilda to prevent follow-ups from units such as Ophelia, Ishtar, and Linde, as well as prevent Lancebreaker Reinhardt from attacking her four times.
With her sky-high Resistance, Mathilda works fantastically with Ploy skills. Both Atk Ploy and Def Ploy make great options which both benefit Mathilda greatly. If she’s alongside other cavaliers, a cavalry buff is also a great choice. Last but not least, Distant Def is the ideal Sacred Seal for this build, granting her a strong defensive boost when attacked at a distance. Either of the aforementioned Ploy skills work great too. If something other than Quick Riposte is being used in the B slot, the Quick Riposte Sacred Seal makes for a strong choice as well.

This set is designed to make the most use of Mathilda’s base weapon: the Ridersbane. With this weapon, she can become an effective anti-cavalry unit. This build is also relatively cheap to be effective with some more expensive alternative skills that are by no means required.
Mathilda will want the most Attack possible in order to give her the highest likelihood of defeating enemy cavaliers in a single hit, making it the overall best choice of boon. Either HP or Defense will make for fine bane choices. The Ridersbane is Mathilda’s base weapon and grants her effective damage against cavaliers. Refining it for the +Eff refine which allows her to ignore cavalry buffs is recommended, thought refining for Attack is also a decent choice. Any Assist can work here, with Reposition being the safe general choice for most cavaliers. Moonbow works great as a Special thanks to its low cooldown, but Iceberg is also a good choice thanks to Mathilda’s high Resistance.
In the A slot, Fury is a solid option that increases all of Mathilda’s stats, though at the cost of some recoil damage after any round of combat. While much more expensive, Distant Counter will allow Mathilda to retaliate against ranged units which of course includes the infamous Reinhardt. In the B slot, Renewal helps Mathilda to stay healthy and helps to offset the recoil damage effect of Fury. Vantage is another solid option, allowing a DC Mathilda to attack first against an attacking Reinhardt or simply allowing Mathilda to attack first against any attacking cavalier. Her default Cancel Affinity is also a nice choice, helping against any green unit that happens to be using Triangle Adept, such as the budget TA Raven Cecilia combo.
In the C slot, Mathilda’s high Resistance allows her to make easy use of Def Ploy in order to weaken the Defense of opposing enemies and thus help her to secure KOs easier. If she’s on a cavalry team, using a cavalry buff is a strong alternative. For the Sacred Seal, the simple Attack Seal will help Mathilda offensively and make it easier for her to secure OHKOs against enemy cavaliers. If she’s using a cavalry buff in her C slot, she can also use Def Ploy as the Sacred Seal instead.
Introduction
The legendary knight of the Deliverance herself, Mathilda comes to our side and joins us in battle! In Heroes, Mathilda is a lance cavalier with a heavy focus on Resistance. While she does indeed possess stellar Resistance, the Mathilda hype stops there, with all other aspects of her abilities being lackluster.
To begin, she possesses a lackluster 29/32 offensive spread. This puts her far on the weaker side of offensive capabilities for lance units, with Mathilda struggling to obtain follow-up attacks against even middling Speed foes without assistance from skills. On top of this, her physical bulk is very poor, possessing low HP and low Defense. Her one saving grace from obscurity is that Resistance stat of hers, which is one of the highest not only among lance units but among the entire cast.
All of this combines to, unfortunately, make Mathilda a unit that’s very hard to recommend. While she has her magical bulk going for her, that’s it. Many other lance units will outperform Mathilda in the majority of roles, some even being arguably better at resisting mages than she is. Still though, when built right, Mathilda can prove to be effective at what she does best: take magic like it’s nothing.
Strengths
Excellent Resistance
At 34 neutral, Mathilda has one of the highest Resistance stats in the entire game. With a plethora of Resistance boosting skills, she can easily resist most forms of magic as if it’s nothing, even sometimes being quite capable of resisting opposing green mages out of the sheer amount of Resistance she has. She is also quite capable of tanking Reinhardt, thought Mathilda can still be KO’d by him if he’s running skills such as Lancebreaker or Moonbow with Quickened Pulse.
Weaknesses
Lackluster offensive capabilities
Mathilda’s biggest hindrance is her offensive statline. With just 29 Attack and 32 Speed, Mathilda struggles on both ends of the offensive front. 29 Attack isn’t terrible, but it isn’t great either. 32 Speed means Mathilda struggles to even double middling Speed foes and is easily doubled by some of the faster units in the game.
Low Defense
At 24 Defense, Mathilda will take a lot of damage from any foe that deals physical damage. Even popular red units such as Zelgius and Ayra will do good damage to her. Combined with her 35 HP, Mathilda is overall poorly designed for dealing with physical units.
Team Options
Counters
Physical damage is the key to Mathilda being defeated. Even if they’re at a Weapon Triangle disadvantage, there are many strong physical threats that can deal a chunk of damage to Mathilda.
-
Axe Fighters: Given her low Defense and Weapon Triangle disadvantage, it is no surprise that axe fighters can deal with Mathilda extremely easily. Units such as any Armads wielding Hector, Brave Ephraim, Surtr, Raven, and Minerva will take care of Mathilda extremely easily.
-
Lance Fighters: Many lance fighters can pose a significant threat to Mathilda. Brave Hector, Hardin, Winter Robin, Nephenee, and Ephraim are a few examples. Mathilda’s younger sister Clair is also a significant threat thanks to her personal weapon which grants effective damage against cavaliers.
- Archers: Many archers possess very strong offensive capabilities and can thus easily deal with Mathilda. Halloween Jakob, Brave Lyn, WF Hinoka, Summer Takumi, and Legendary Lucina can all deal with Mathilda relatively easily.

Horse Emblem duelist. Not the fastest or the strongest of them, Mathilda serves as a tough lance cavalier that most units without an axe or Lancebreaker have a hard time getting through. While her offensive statline is nothing impressive, Mathilda makes up for it with her extra bulk and Cavalry killing abilities.

+6 Merge. An excellent magic counter. Mathilda has the ability to reach a staggering 52 Res when buffed by Fortify Calv and equipped with the Distant Defense 1 seal ( 61 Res on enemy phase if fully merged, has achieved an S support with the Summoner, is standing within range of a Ward Calv ally and if adjacent to an ally with whom she shares an S support with). At this level, she walls all red mages and dragons, takes zero to little damage from blue mages and dragons and can hold her own against a weekend green mage. A full set of horse buffs along with Quick Riposte allows her to kill speedy enemy units on the second hit. When the time comes for her to activate her special, she will severely dent, if not outright obliterate the enemy unit.

Nature: +DEF/-RES
Seal: RES+1
The aim of this build is to sacrifice a few points of Mathilda's RES and ATK to massively make up for the deficit in DEF that she has. By starting with a +DEF nature, you can add another eight points to her defense with Fortress DEF to push her DEF up on par with her RES, then using a RES+1 seal to somewhat make up for the drawback of her -RES nature.
When used in tandem with a cavalier team, preferably with at least a Fortify buff, it allows Mathilda to essentially function as a tank for your cavaliers, similar to how Sheena functions for Armored units, with one less point in her DEF/RES stats.
