- Seal: DEF Ploy 3 / Threaten SPD 3 / RES + 3

In order for Regal Blade to work at its maximum potential, Lloyd needs to finish off his target in a single engagement. Hence, this set is focused on doing so; set up the ploys and secure the kill as fast as possible. Lloyd's above average RES meant that running such a build is relatively feasible.

This set functions very well with Fury, as it not only gives Lloyd the ATK and SPD he desperately need, he also gets a RES increase, which could be very helpful in terms of activating the ploys. With the ploys fully in effect and Regal Blade, Lloyd effectively has 58 ATK and 43 SPD, which could keep up with the competition assuming you could hit the ploys.

The B skill choice will depend on the player's intention. As Lloyd will be unable to keep up with the newer sword units, running SwordBreaker will always be a decent option. Desperation is a good choice for player phase Lloyd, and Quick Riposte for enemy phase.

Should a player choose to run Life and Death, due to the reduced RES, it might be more ideal for Lloyd to run the corresponding threaten skills for DEF and SPD instead. Functionally they are very similar, however do be careful as Lloyd becomes even squishier than before.

- B slot: Quick Riposte 3 / Vantage 3 / Wrath 3 / R Tomebreaker 3
- C slot: Varies
- Seal: Distant Def 3 / Quick Riposte 3

This set focuses on making Lloyd a dedicated mage killer by investing Distant Counter onto the White Wolf. His somewhat high speed coupled with Regal Blade could allow him to avoid follow-ups from most mages. As such, running Distant Counter is actually not a terrible idea for Lloyd. Moonbow and Glimmer are both solid choice for specials to either secure a kill using a follow-up when fighting against these magical units..

The main difference from the above build is the lack of ploys. Ploy are not very suitable are not as suitable as most of them have relatively high RES, making Ploy skills somewhat unreliable. Furthermore, a large proportion of the mages already lacks the physical bulk to survive Lloyd's attacks, making the extra DEF Ploy relatively useless. As such, Distant Def seal will work better to increase his longevity.

For different possible combinations, one could always use the Quick Riposte seal in favour of either Vantage or Wrath to either improve his enemy or player phase. Red Tomebreaker is also an option for the occasionally shaky same-colour match-ups.

Introduction

Lloyd hails from the Black Fang with his legendary weapon Regal Blade. Arche-type wise, he is a relatively balanced unit with a bit of everything, while dropping some of his physical bulk for magic. Unfortunately, while his weapon has aged relatively gracefully compared to some older legendary weapons, Lloyd's balanced nature does him no favor, as he lacks a specialty to make him truly stand out compared to other older sword units. His lack of priorities also somewhat neuters his own legendary weapon's effectiveness, as it only works on full-health targets.

Regardless, with enough dedication, Lloyd could be used as either a Player Phase duelist centering around ploying his opponents, or a mage killer to leverage on his higher RES stat.

Strengths

Regal Blade

Even though it is a legendary weapon of the previous generation, it is still relatively serviceable. Regal Blade works in both the Player and Enemy Phase, which improves Lloyd's overall versatility.

Good RES

Lloyd's 30 RES is actually rather high for a melee unit. Having a high RES meant that Ploys are a relatively good option to give Lloyd a potential edge during a fight. The high RES also comes into play when using either a Distant Counter build to fight mages or when fighting Dragons.

Weaknesses

Outclassed by peers

In Fire Emblem, most units uses swords. Lloyd being in a class that is overly saturated will struggle to stand out. As units are getting stronger overtime, Lloyd will further fade into irrelevancy.

Outdated Stat Distribution

While 32 ATK and 35 SPD is not bad. One can only say it's "not bad". The newer units all have a theme in terms of their stat distribution. Lloyd did not dump his weaknesses enough to secure a niche for himself.

Mediocre DEF

As a melee unit, DEF is important for survival due to most of them being physical unit. The main issue with Lloyd is that 20 DEF is not enough to survive, and one could even argue that Lloyd could spare some extra points in DEF for some of his other stats to enhance his niche. Unfortunately this is not the case.

Team Options

In order to fully leverage on his Regal Blade, he needs some SPD support to hit the SPD threshold of avoiding follow-up. This meant that running buff-focused units such as Brave Lucina and Ephraim a good option and helps to cover his inadequacies fighting off sword units. Marth and Eirika are also good supportive backbone for Lloyd, however they are not as recommended in order to have a larger colour coverage for your team.

Blue units in general could be troublesome for Lloyd to deal with. An all-rounder that can deal with the whole blue spectrum is a desirable teammate for Lloyd. Most green units should be able to fulfill that role well, just be wary of the prominent blue threats, such as Nowi, Reinhardt and Effie.

Counters

Other than the obvious blue units (Lances, Tomes and Manaketes), Lloyd struggles a lot physically and will outright lose to many recently released sword unit in a 1-on-1 fight to the death. This includes Ayra, Mia and Soleil. Lloyd is also easily neutralised by strong offensive archers, such as Bridal Cordelia and Brave Lyn.
