With his great physical bulk and personal weapon, Linus can work fantastically in a defensive Enemy Phase set.
Basilikos is a powerful weapon in itself, acting as a 16 might Slaying Axe with refinery options. This combines amazingly with the skill Steady Breath, allowing him to proc even lengthy Specials very consistently. A Defense refine will grant Linus a significant boost to his physical bulk, whereas even the Life and Death refine could be considered as he will still possess good physical bulk while also gaining more protection from double attacks. The Assist slot is open to whatever one wants. A skill such as Reposition fits well on him as he can potentially move an ally out of danger and protect them.
His A slot and Special go hand in hand. Thanks to the skill Steady Breath, Linus can easily make use of Aether. With Steady Breath charging his Special by two per action and Basilikos reducing Aether to a cooldown of four, Linus will always activate Aether on his second attack, making him a dangerous opponent to fight. In order to guarantee Aether’s activation, Quick Riposte is used as the Sacred Seal so Linus will perform a guaranteed follow-up attack when above 70% HP.
As alternatives to Aether, Sol will grant Linus with good self-sustainability while Bonfire will scale off of his high Defense. If combined with Steady Breath, both will activate on Linus’s first attack and even his second attack should he be doubled. Steady Stance and Close Def are two strong alternatives to Steady Breath, granting Linus will a solid boost to his defenses when attacked. If one does use a A slot other than Steady Breath, making use of either Sol or Bonfire is recommended over Aether due to them still being able to activate every round of combat without relying on Steady Breath.
For the rest of the build, Guard in the B slot will prevent the enemy from charging their own Special when Linus is above 80% HP, allowing Linus to more safely bait anyone using skills such as Quickened Pulse, Heavy Blade, or Bold Fighter. One could also run Quick Riposte here and free up the Sacred Seal slot for something else such as Close Def or Panic Ploy. The C slot is open to player preference. His default Drive Def is a safe general choice that allows Linus to boost the Defense of nearby allies. With his high HP, he can also make use of skills such as Panic Ploy and Infantry Pulse.

Sacred Seal: Attack +3 / Speed +3 / Heavy Blade
With high Attack, good Speed, and his personal weapon, Linus can function very well in a fully offensive set.
With Basilikos reducing the cooldown of any Special by 1, Linus can utilize a number of different Specials to great effect. The Life and Death refine for Basilikos gives Linus a huge boost to his offensive potential while still maintaining acceptable defenses. If one wishes to not hinder his bulk, the Speed refine is a solid choice as well. His Assist can be used for any standard movement skill such as Reposition, or one could also use Reciprocal Aid to instantly reach the activation range for Brazen Atk/Spd (Though unfortunately not low enough to activate Wrath or Desperation). For his Special, Moonbow is extremely powerful when combined with Basilikos due to it only having a cooldown of one, making it activate incredibly consistently and pairing well with both Wrath and Desperation. Draconic Aura and Luna are both powerful options as well, but won’t activate as consistently as Moonbow does unless Heavy Blade is also being used.
Brazen Atk/Spd in the A slot will give Linus a huge seven point boost to both Attack and Speed when he’s below 80% HP. As his B slot skill will require him to be below 75% anyway, this makes for a huge increase to Linus’s offensive potential when he’s under that threshold. Fury is a strong alternative that not only boosts all of his stats, but the passive recoil damage he takes will can help him to reach the HP threshold for his B slot. Wrath gives Linus +1 Special charge at the start of each turn if he’s below 75% HP, which when used alongside Moonbow allows him to have it charged at the start of every turn and even deal an additional 10 damage from his Special attack. Desperation is a cheap but still effective alternative that lets Linus perform any follow-up attack immediately after his first if he’s below 75% HP.
The C slot is completely open to one’s own choice. Drive Def is Linus’s default option and is a effective choice for almost any situation, allowing Linus to boost his allies’ Defense. His Sacred Seal slot can be used to boost either his Attack or Speed to improve his offensive potential. An Attack +3 Seal goes great with Wrath for the extra power from his attacks while a Speed +3 Seal goes great with Desperation for the extra doubling potential. Heavy Blade is another option if Linus is running Draconic Aura or Luna, allowing Linus to activate either skill on his second attack should he activate it with Desperation.

Sacred Seal: Heavy Blade
With the right investment, Linus can make use of the powerful Galeforce Special.
For this set, Linus wants the most Attack and Speed possible. Because of this, the Life and Death refine for Basilikos is the most optimal option as it grants Linus the largest boost to both of these stats. His Assist slot is open to a variety of options. One could use a skill such as Reposition or any other movement skill so Linus can assist with unit positioning, or Reciprocal Aid to allow Linus to instantly reach the range of Brazen Atk/Spd, though unfortunately not low enough for Desperation.
As it is what this build is based around, Galeforce is the only option for the Special. This high cooldown Special allows Linus to immediately act again after his first action, allowing him to then safely retreat, use his Assist, or even attack again. With the Basilikos bringing Galeforce’s charge down to four and Heavy Blade as the Sacred Seal, he is capable of charging Galeforce in a single round if he doubles and activates Heavy Blade. Because of this, his A slot and B slot are based around increasing his chances to double and activate Heavy Blade.
Brazen Atk/Spd will grant Linus with a huge Attack and Speed boost whenever he’s below 80% HP, greatly increasing his offensive potential. Life and Death also provides a substantial boost to Attack and Speed, though at an even further cost to his defenses. Both of these A slots can significantly improve Linus’s chance to activate Galeforce. In the B slot, Desperation lets Linus perform any follow-up attack immediately if he is below 75% HP. With this skill, Linus can potentially fully charge Galeforce without even taking a hit, assuming he doubles and also activates Heavy Blade.
His C slot is open to Player Preference. His default C slot skill, Drive Def, is a safe choice which allows Linus to buff his nearby allies with increased Defense. Though very expensive, Even Spd Wave will allow Linus to boost himself and adjacent allies by six Speed at the start of even numbered turns. As this skill will activate even when Linus has no adjacent allies, Even Spd Wave effectively gives Linus increased doubling potential every other turn.
Introduction
Linus joins Heroes as a infantry axe fighter obtained from his respective Grand Hero Battle. Unlike his brother Lloyd, Linus has been done justice in Heroes, coming with a great set of stats, good starting loadout, and, most importantly, amazing artwork.
His standout stat is his amazing Attack stat of 37. Combined with Basilikos, Linus is capable of dealing a lot of damage in a single hit and trigger his Special more often for even more damage. On top of this, he comes with great physical bulk thanks to his HP of 42 and Defense of 32. His Speed stat of 33 is also fairly good too, granting him some decent protection from follow-up attacks and being quite easily boosted if one wants Linus to have a more offensive playstyle.
His two notable weaknesses are his Resistance and his Grand Hero status. At 18 Resistance, Linus is very susceptible to fast mages and dragons who can deal with him quite easily. Being a Grand Hero Battle unit, he also does not have access to random IVs.
All in all, Linus is a solid free unit. His combination of Attack, Speed, and Defense allows him to serve as a strong melee fighter as well as run a variety of offensive and defensive sets. If you’re looking for a axe infantry fighter, Linus is a strong contender and is a Grand Hero worthy of your consideration.
Strengths
Amazing Attack
Linus’s base Attack of 37 is the third highest in the entire game, matching units such as Chrom and Lilina. Combined with his personal weapon Basilikos, Linus has a base Attack of 53 that can also easily be boosted through skills or refining the Basilikos. This gives Linus immense damage per attack and can even cut through some higher Defense foes as well.
Great physical bulk
With 42 HP and 32 Defense, Linus possesses a physical bulk of 74. This high physical bulk gives him strong survivability when fighting physical foes, making him well suited for dueling other physical units and running more defensive sets such as utilizing Steady Breath.
Good Speed
33 Speed isn’t the fastest, but it’s still pretty good. Offensively, Linus can make use of Basilikos’ refine and other skills to boost his Speed into the 40s. Defensively, he has decent protection from follow-up attacks which helps increase his survivability and further increases his physical bulk.
Great starting loadout
Linus comes out of the gate with plenty of useful skills that one could easily consider using all of. Basilikos is the star of the show. While it is normally just a legendary Slaying Axe, which it in itself is pretty strong, it can then also be refined to give a boost to any of Linus’s stats or even grant him the Life and Death skill, giving him a huge boost to his offensive potential. He also comes with Luna, Brazen Atk/Spd, and Drive Def, all of which are good options on him, making him a good budget unit.
Weaknesses
Low Resistance
At 18 Resistance, Linus fares very poorly against magical opponents. Fast red and green mages will be able to deal with him with relative ease, while blue mages will be able to deal a lot of damage to him, if not KO him in the case of certain mages. On top of this, dragons will deal a lot of damage to Linus too.
Grand Hero Battle unit
While being a Grand Hero means everyone will be able to obtain him for free, it comes with two notable drawbacks: lack of random IVs and cost to merge. No random IVs means his stats are set in stone and cannot be further optimized for improved performance. While Linus is capable of becoming fully merged, this will require a large sum of Heroic Grails, meaning getting him to +10 will take an extremely long time.
Team Options
Counters
-
Mages: With his low Resistance and only good Speed, a majority of the faster red and green mages can easily deal with Linus. Bridal Tharja, SM Eirika, Celica, Nino, SF Nino, and Spring Sharena for example can all easily double Linus and secure a KO. The blue mages such as Ishtar and Linde struggle a bit more thanks to the Weapon Triangle, but can still obtain a KO.
-
Dragons: Due to his low Resistance once again, many of the dragons pose a threat to Linus. Primarily, both Young and Adult Tiki possess high Attack, high Defense, and a Weapon Triangle advantage against Linus, making them extremely dangerous opponents. The green dragons such as Fallen Robin and Myrrh also pose a notable threat.
- Sword Fighters: Thanks to their Weapon Triangle advantage, many of the popular sword units are able to cut through Linus’s strong physical bulk. Ayra, Mia, and Karla for example all possess amazing offensive stats, allowing them to double Linus with relative ease and deal high damage per attack. Other than that, Zelgius and Legendary Ike both possess strong defenses and can resist Linus’s attacks, allowing them to retaliate and deal high damage in return.

How to be tanky and hit hard.
PROS :
- Pavise will divise by 2 the damages from adjacent foes. Shield Pulse will also substract 5 points from the damage. With 42 HP it's nearly to impossible to one-shot Linus with a melee attack. He can even tank some powerfull red unit, like Arya.
- With a base stat of 37 Atk and 33 Spd, and two L&D3, Linus can do a lot of damage, and double his ennemies easily.
- Basilikos reduce Pavise cd by one. Shield Pulse make it available at the begining of turn 1, and Heavy Blade ensure the availability of Pavise with just one hit.
- Dat abs.
CONS :
- Pavise can only block damage from adjacent foes. It leaves Linus very sensible at every range attack, magical or physical. The -10 Def/Res from L&D3 and Basilikos effect won't help either. However, with his very good speed and HP, he will survive on hit, but not more.

Supported with Lloyd and as soon as +3 is possible, infantry pulse will work perfectly with my +3 Lloyd (missed out on +4 sad reacc). Lloyd helps Linus get crucial doubles with drive spd and rally spd/res.
Also hardly loses any melee combat fights, even against swords, as long as he can reactivate shield pulse.
Ayra and other fast swordies are tough, so letting them attack first is optimal, but probably not likely in Arena Defense.

Linus is broken.
This is a melee tank build. The goal is to capitalize on Linus's monstrous ATK and SPD while relying on special procs to patch up his melee defenses.
With the recommended skills, Linus will have the following stats:
45/58/38/27/14 (Basilikos+EFF)
45/65/45/27/14 (Brazen ATK/SPD)
Skill choices:
Weapon: Basilikos+EFF
A: Brazen ATK/SPD
While Linus has pretty good tanking stats, 21MT on a weapon is very hard to pass up. The Life and Death refine coupled with Brazen ATK/SPD means Linus will actually not need a special to finish off his enemies. Under Brazen ATK/SPD, Linus reaches 65 ATK and 45 SPD before ally buffs come in to play.
Special: Pavise
B: Shield Pulse
Seal: Heavy Blade
This is the meat of the build. Since Linus doesn’t need a special proc to win his matchups, what are his special options? There’s a few that come to mind.
Healing specials can be useful since they’re relatively low charge and don’t boost his ATK. However, these specials are sometimes difficult to time. For example, Linus may finish off a 45 HP unit with two attacks, both dealing 35 damage, and Sol might not proc until the second hit. This fails to maximize the healing effect and still leaves Linus in a vulnerable position.
Galeforce / Desperation is somewhat popular, as this makes Linus an absolute monster on player phase. However, he will lack staying power on the enemy phase to fully take advantage of his high ATK and SPD stats.
Wrath is usually brought up with cooldown reduction weapons are in play. However, Linus's ATK is already so ridiculously high that he doesn't need any damage boosts to win his matchups. A 40 HP enemy dies whether they take 45 damage or 95 damage.
Vantage usually couples well with Brazen, but this is somewhat problematic for his matchups. Without Distant Counter, Linus prefers to combat melee units. Usually, melee units have a decent amount of HP and DEF, so Linus wouldn't be able to finish them off with just one hit. Linus relies on doubling his enemies to win matchups, so having to take a hit while already in Brazen range is usually problematic.
Pavise / Shield Pulse / Heavy Blade is extremely potent, even with Linus’s Life and Death refine. Pavise reduces damage by 50%, and Shield Pulse further reduces that damage by 5. This means that any attack that would normally deal 10 damage to Linus would end up dealing 0 damage. On top of that, any damage above 10 is scaled by half, thanks to Pavise. With 45 HP, even an attack of 90 damage would fail to finish Linus off in one hit, as 90 damage affected by Shield Pulse Pavise would be reduced to 40 damage.
Heavy Blade is chosen over Close DEF because Linus wants to use his monstrous ATK stat to keep Pavise fully charged at all times. Close DEF would give Linus an extra 6 melee DEF and RES all the time, but Shield Pulse Pavise procs provide an extra 5 melee DEF and RES on top of the 50% damage reduction. Keeping the special fully charged is the most important part of this build.
C: Threaten DEF (flex)
Threaten DEF is chosen to help with the M!Grima matchup when Linus isn’t in Brazen range. If M!Grima has an effective 48 HP and 39 DEF (this is achievable with Steady Breath and a boon in anything other than HP or DEF), Linus will be able to double and KO M!Grima if either Threaten DEF or Brazen ATK/SPD are active.
Other considerations are the Smoke skills and your basic team buffs. Out of the Smoke skills, ATK Smoke is probably the most useful, as it helps Linus tank and helps him proc Heavy Blade.
Assist: Reciprocal Aid (flex)
Reciprocal Aid is chosen to increase Linus’s tanking power. If the team consists of a second frontline tank (for example, a DC blue), Linus can act as a healer if the battlefield is red or ranged heavy.
