As a dragon unit with passable Defense and Attack, it logically follows that Kana would be able to run the typical Steady Breath Enemy Phase build.
Kana doesn’t currently have access to IVs, so that makes for an easy choice of neutral. This does, however, make his weapon refine a bit more pivotal, as it will primarily inform what purpose Kana will serve in a team composition. In arena tiers that primarily see highly merged armors carrying Bold Fighter, Ayra, and Karla, foregoing Kana’s good Speed to instead increase his Defense helps him perform better in these matchups -- denying these doubles is difficult anyways. In lower arena tiers, though, it may be worthwhile to bring Kana’s Speed to 36 to prevent follow-ups from decently fast threats like Marth. Lightning Breath allows Kana to counterattack from any distance, and the adaptive damage effect that its refine grants allows him to be a serious threat even to Resistance-heavy archers, mages, and daggers. Alternatively, in higher Arena tiers where mages, archers, and daggers are rare, his native Water Breath is an option that grants him some extra Defense and Resistance at the cost of forgoing the ability to counterattack at-range.
Assists can vary. Reposition allows Kana to provide ferry a teammate to safety while getting into position to tank, while Swap serves a similar function. For arena score purposes and additional buff flexibility, a Dual Rally+ can be used here.
As for Specials, odd-numbered cooldowns should be selected because of Steady Breath’s cooldown acceleration. Since Lightning Breath adds one cooldown to any Special, odd-numbered Specials will become even-numbered and vice-versa. Selecting an odd-numbered Special, then, prevents cooldowns from being wasted and grants maximum effectiveness. Aether is preferred because of its potent offensive and healing effects, but Bonfire or Luna can be used (at the cost of sacrificing sustain) if it is unavailable.
Quick Riposte is Kana’s ideal B skill, as it grants him guaranteed follow-ups during Enemy Phase provided he is within its HP threshold. When used with the Distant or Close Def Seal, Kana becomes a potent tank against either ranged or melee foes. If used in conjunction with the Quick Riposte Seal, Renewal is a high-scoring option that grants Kana some extra sustain, while Vantage is an alternative that may allow Kana to unexpectedly take down an enemy.
Fortify Dragons is Kana’s native C-slot, and can be an incredibly useful tool in teams composed of two or more dragon units. For self-sufficiency, Even or Odd Def or Atk Wave are great options. If Kana is deployed without dragon allies, a Drive skill of one’s choice provides adequate team support.

- Passive A: Fury
- Passive B: Windsweep
- Passive C: Res Smoke / Threaten Res / Def Smoke / Threaten Def
- Sacred Seal: Phantom Spd
This build seeks to turn Kana into a deceptively annoying threat to melee units.
Dark Breath with a Defense refine used in conjunction with Res Smoke / Threaten Res / Def Smoke / Threaten Def gives Kana incredible utility, allowing him to heavily debuff 3 stats at once. Water Breath is a serviceable alternative, offering Kana a further boost to his defenses on Enemy Phase, though it offers no debuffing utility. Fury gives his stats a flat, permanent +3 boost, but perhaps most importantly brings his Speed to 36. This, along with the Phantom Speed seal, gives him 46 effective Speed in regards to Windsweep’s activation condition, which is more than enough to activate Windsweep against a vast majority of units.
Noontime is the Special of choice. Although it often does not see a lot of use in the current meta, the self-sustain it grants Kana makes him surprisingly bulky. If the thought of using a healing Special fills one with revulsion, Moonbow and Glimmer are effective choices that simply boost Kana’s damage output.
Windsweep allows Kana to safely initiate on any unit with less than 46 Speed without worry of being counterattacked. When combined with Dark Breath’s debuffs and a Resistance or Defense debuff in his C-slot, Kana can enable his allies to perform a clean sweep of the enemy team or can easily survive an onslaught from his foes on Enemy Phase.

- Passive A: Brazen Def/Res / Triangle Adept
- Passive B: Vantage
- Passive C: Fortify Dragons / Threaten Res / Threaten Atk / Drive Skill
- Sacred Seal: Quick Riposte
Although slightly gimmicky, this set seeks to use the tools Kana has at his disposal -- those being his native skills and balanced stats -- to create an effective but low-investment build.
Water Breath (along with a Defense Refine) help Kana take advantage of his natural bulk on Enemy Phase. Along with the Quick Riposte seal, this weapon allows Kana to bait red units fairly easily, dealing heavy damage to them in return if not KOing them outright. Bonfire is easily accessible and performs reasonably well given the boost to Kana’s Defense refinement grants -- not to mention that its damage dealt is less variable than Dragon Fang.
Brazen Def / Res is an interesting tool, giving Kana a hefty Defense/Resistance buff once he’s below 80% HP, making him incredibly hard to KO. Combined with Quick Riposte (which grants him guaranteed follow-ups when he is initiated on and he has more than 70% HP) and Vantage, (which allows him to attack first when initiated on with less than 75% HP) Kana becomes incredibly dangerous to attack on Enemy Phase whether he has been damaged or not. Triangle Adept is an option that allows Kana to easily check most physical reds, even those which deal effective damage to him.
Reciprocal Aid synergizes with Kana’s A Slot, B Slot, and Seal, allowing him to either use an ally as an HP infusion to re-activate Quick Riposte or swap HP with a damaged ally to activate Brazen Def/Res and/or Vantage. Ardent Sacrifice also will activate Brazen Def/Res, though it is slightly less flexible as it cannot heal Kana as well.
Fortify Dragons is an excellent C skill if Kana is being used in a team with one or more other dragons, but Threaten Res, Threaten Atk, or any Drive skill can provide adequate support if that is not the case.
Introduction
Looking at Male Kana at a glance, he initially seems to have a good deal going for him. Boasting a breath weapon that gives him a defensive boost, an exceedingly similar statline to Young Tiki -- who is considered to be an excellent dragon unit by many -- and status as a blue dragon unit in a meta that gives them many powerful tools to work with, Kana may seem like a very compelling choice to invest in.
Unfortunately, however, the fact that Kana is being granted as a Grand Hero Battle unit really does limit his potential. Since he cannot gain access to any IVs, Kana must settle for being a jack of all trades but master of none, limiting his ability to perform well at any particular role -- and though mergeability is now a non-issue as of version 2.11, Heroic Grails are hard to come by and Kana doesn't really stand out. Moreover, Kana’s excellent native Skills makes him a tempting choice to fodder. If one is severely lacking in Nowis, though, Kana is definitely less niche than his Mama, Female Corrin, and his status as an F2P blue dragon will be appealing to many. With some care and investment, he can definitely be a strong member of any team.
Strengths
Passable Attack and Respectable Speed
While a 31/33 offensive statline isn’t stellar, it does allow Kana to deal decent damage and avoid a good amount of follow-ups.
This is especially true if he chooses to boost these stats further through refinement, skills, and/or seals.
Good Mixed Bulk
Kana’s base 31 Defense, 29 Resistance, and 40 HP are far from awful.
Any of these stats can also be further boosted by weapon refinement, and allow Kana to counter both ranged and melee foes effectively.
This is especially useful given Kana's access to Lightning Breath, which allows him to counterattack regardless of distance.
Weaknesses
Balanced Stats
Kana does not particularly excel at one thing, which makes him slightly less compelling than more specialized dragon units.
Given that Nowi is now available at 3 -- 4 stars, it may be hard to justify using Kana given her ability to further specialize in her Defense and greater Attack/HP.
Free Unit Status
While it’s always amazing to get a unit for free, Kana’s status as a Grand Hero Battle unit means that he does not have access to IVs.
Given how strong certain Grand Hero Battle and Tempest Trials units are (Black Knight is a notable example), it may be hard to justify using Heroic Grails on Kana given how limited they are.
Team Options
Counters
Foes that deal effective damage to dragons prove to be a significant threat to Kana, even if they’re red. Greens also are able to break through his defenses and deal heavy damage.
- Effective Damage Dealers: Marth, Masked Marth, Lucina, Chrom, Exalted Chrom, Alm, and Roy can KO Kana if he is doubled or is not running Triangle Adept. Julia and Deirdre hit Kana like a truck, and Legendary Young Tiki deals with him rather easily.
- Strong Greens: Hector, Valentine Hector, Fallen Robin, Myrrh, Fae, Female Kana, Brave Ike, Dorcas, Nino, and Spring Sharena are all great units in their own right who possess a color advantage over Kana. It’s best not to battle them with him if possible.

Dream build for Male Kana: His weapon should be Lightning breath+ attack because the build in distant counter is op (Lightning breath+ speed is good back up option.) Draw back is ok for male Kana, Aether is good for a dragon like him (Moonbow and Luna are good backup options if you do not have any Aether to give to him.) Brazen Def/Res is already a good skill for him. Vantage 3 combined with Lightning break+ is a super strong combo. Fortify Dragons since he already has it, Res Ploy 3 to weaking his foes with high and low res

Though this set works very well on Corrin, Kana can fill some holes that Corrin struggles with. Kana has 8 more Res than Corrin leaving him to deal with ranged units way better than his mother and it will especially shine in this build. He also gets 5 more Atk than Corrin when their weapons are equipped which helps deal with the low Atk issue that many people had while using Corrin. While only having 1 speed stat lower than Corrin, kana can double units and do what Corrin could do but potentially better. Let’s analyze the build...
Weapon - Light Breath+ (Speed): to Buff Kana’s and his teammates
stats by five. This allows kan’s bulky stats to be raised even higher and allows his speed (which is also very high) and Atk to be buffed as well allowing him to be good offensively as well. It’s also a plus to have all your units buffed too.
Support - Swap/Pivot: To move into range for enemies to Atk him and activate his sacred cowl/ debuff
A Skill - Distant counter: Allows Kana to counter attack from far away, especially to get rid of potential threats. ( Uses this instead of lightning breath so you can proc shield Pulse straight away, allows you to to spur out debuff with dark breath, and dark breath has more Atk)
B Skill - Shield Pulse 3: Allows Sacred Cowl to proc on first turn and decrease power of enemy atks by 5
C Skill - Spd Smoke: Using Spd smoke allows kana to ensure that he can double the enemy. If you pair this up with Atk Smoke, kana will be viable offensively and Defensively
S Skill - Atk Smoke: Though you could use Distant defense/ Close Defense, Atk Smoke allows kana to tank units hits whether it’s close up and far away and it also benefits other units as well.

With Water Breath, Brazen Def/Res, and Close Defense, Kana reaches a whopping defensive statline of 48/46, which should be able to withstand any amount of beating from any Melee unit when attacked. With a 42/40 defensive statline against ranged attackers, Kana can still absorb quite a few shots
Ardent Sacrifice is used to help bring Kana into Brazen range, but if Water breath can be refined, Ardent Sacrifice is useless. Instead, Pivot can replace it.
Ignis is there to abuse the high defense that Kana has in enemy phase, and should only be activated then.
To be honest, the B skill and C skill are up to user designation, but I chose Swordbreaker to have him fare better with falchion users. As a C skill I chose Attack Smoke.
If Water breath is refineable, refine speed. If that happens, Swordbreaker can be replaced with Windsweep. Kana9;s lowish attack can be fixed with Ignis and the fact that he uses the lower defensive statline to calculate damage on ranged units.

for budgeting Aether can be replaced with Bonfire, Warding Breath can be replaced with Brazen Def/Res, QR3 can be replaced with Vantage or renewal, and lightning breath can be replaced with water breath +spd/+def/+res. In my opinion +spd is the best as it brings him up to a solid 36 spd allowing him to avoid a large amount of doubles and most all quads from brave weapons users. If not running warding or steady breath don't run aether as it is too inconsistent otherwise. Lightning breath is easily the most important part here but if you absolutely can't fodder a nowi or (A)Tiki then water breath can work as well.

*Note this is with summoner support and a defense refined weapon and if he was at +3 merges*
Male Kana comes into the game as the first dragon GHB unit, and is very similar to both his female counterpart and his mother. Kana can make a great ftp wall with his native water breath and with steady breath from brave Ike. He can become a monster wall who can tear holes in enemy teams and keep on fighting.
He may be good, but do remember that female Corrin can have more merges and IVs, however as free to play goes, Kana may be one of the best units we have gotten yet. So don't just go sac him off for brazen def/res 3 yet.
