Similar to units like Young Tiki, Female Kana has a very well-rounded stat spread with decent bases all around. None of her stats are too low to make use of, and none are so high that her entire playstyle revolves around it. A boon to any of her stats is fairly viable, as is any bane except -ATK. Choosing optimal IVs for Kana depends largely on what one expects her role on her team to be. A Neutral Kana is actually pretty good, and avoids having to take any 4-point superbanes.

Boons

  • +SPD: Likely Kana's optimal boon, a Speed boon can make Kana frighteningly fast and give her fantastic mixed phase potential. When fully invested into, Kana can double many speedy units on Player Phase like fast lance fliers, and even escape doubles from sword units.

    • However, it is worth noting that this Speed-boosting niche may be slightly less necessary on Kana than on blue dragons like Nowi and Female Corrin, where investment in Speed can help them dodge doubles from units with fast deadly Specials like Ayra, as well as tip the scales versus Falchion-users, qualities that aren't as relevant to Kana.

  • +DEF: A boon to her Defense can help minimize the damage she takes from units with very high offensive presences like Bold Fighter Effie or both variants of Ephraim, which Kana may be expected to handle. At higher tiers in Arena, +DEF is very likely preferred over +SPD.

  • +ATK: A boost to Attack is certainly never bad, though Kana may prefer the added survivability and mixed phase potential from boons to her Defense and Speed just a pinch more. Still, Kana's 30 Attack can definitely stand to be higher, and a boon to her Attack may net her a few extra KOs. Depending on her teammates, how much support she has, and what threats her team requires her to handle, it may sometimes even be the optimal option.

Neutral

  • RES: It is best to avoid a bane to her Resistance if possible. If brought too low, it can even end up causing her to lose the matchup versus blue nukers like Reinhardt. If her team sorely needs it, she can actually make good use of her 4-point superboon here.

Banes

  • -HP: Though a 4-point superbane, HP is her most disposable stat. She will usually be making use of all four of her other stats, and the lost HP can easily be gained back through a weapon refine.
  • -RES / -DEF / -SPD: If an HP bane is unavailable, a bane to her Resistance or if necessary her Defense will probably be her next best choices. In certain arena tiers where skills such as Bold Fighter are ubiquitous, Speed may even start to become her least valuable stat and be preferred as a bane.

Kana is able to run the standard high-investment dragon build to fantastic effect. Lightning Breath is Kana's preferred weapon, letting her counter common blue and green mages as well as archers like Brave Lyn and Wings of Fate Hinoka. As one of the fastest dragon units in the game, and the absolute fastest green one, Kana makes great use of both a Speed boon and refine, which gives her the Speed necessary to prevent doubles from fast mages and Firesweep users, and possibly double them on initiation with some team support.

As a unit who doesn't mind taking hits, Reposition is the standard option for Kana, letting her pull any frailer allies who have already made their attacks behind her, or toss them forward at the start of a turn to finish the map. Swap can work similarly and may be preferred in tight spaces, though may sometimes fail to move her allies to safety.

Depending on your playstyle, Kana will want either Aether or Bonfire which, thanks to her weapon, will have a cooldown of 6 or 4 respectively and thus synergize fantastically with Steady Breath or Warding Breath. Aether will not activate in one combat unless she is doubled, which is actually preferred, as launching it onto a second, full HP enemy is often more useful and will result in more HP recovered. Bonfire, instead, will activate every time Kana is attacked and be more reliable at securing kills, but comes with a very noticeable drop to her sustain.

Steady Breath is generally the preferred A slot for Kana, leveraging her high Defense, though if one's team has less problem with physical units and needs a more reliable mage counter, Warding Breath may be more powerful.

Quick Riposte is vital on Kana as it will guarantee she doubles when she is attacked. This ensures she makes maximum use of her chosen A slot Breath, lets her double through Speed ties on other Speed-invested enemies, and will grant her the needed "guaranteed follow-up attack" to break through skills such as Wary Fighter. If one wants to protect themself from fast Specials such as Quickened Pulse Moonbow users and Bold Fighter Effie and Fallen Hardin, Guard is a useful alternative, in which case Quick Riposte can be utilized as a Sacred Seal instead.

Kana relies on no specific C slot, which can be adjusted to whatever her teammates demand. If used with other dragons, Goad Dragons is powerful tool. Elsewise, any useful skill such as Drive Spd or Threaten Spd can work great. Having over 40 HP also means Kana can reliably proc Panic Ploy on the majority of mages.

Kana will want Quick Riposte as her Sacred Seal if she is using Guard, but otherwise she makes fantastic use of Close Def or Distant Def. As usual, which one is best will depend primarily on her teammates, or possible which seals are already in use by other teammates. As melee units are more common in arena, Close Def will come into play more, will boost her matchups against other dragons, and can be key to allowing her to take hits from sword users. Meanwhile Distant Def will boost her power to tank at a range and keep her safe from buffed Reinhardts if she is running no other Resistance buffs.

Instead of putting all points into her Speed, Kana can also choose to invest fully into her Defense. Compared to her previous build, this one will start to become better and better the higher your arena score reaches and the more merges she has. Generally, at higher score levels, mages start to appear a little less frequently and Bold Fighter armored units much more so. While they do not become so rare to the extent that dropping Lightning Breath becomes a good idea, it does mean that shifting the focus of Kana's build to Defense becomes more important, as Speed means nothing in the face of Bold Fighter. Often enough, these higher score ranges will also increase the chances of running into highly invested cavalry teams, and Speed similarly means little in the face of Reinhardt. At some point, while it is somewhat of a shame to drop, Speed may actually become her least useful stat and it may instead be worth taking a bane in Speed as to keep her HP neutral, granting 4 more points of bulk.

For the most part the overall makeup of this build is the same as the previous. The main difference is that most of the investment into Kana should go into Defense-boosting, although a small bit of investment into her Resistance can be useful, especially if one is forced to use a Kana with a Resistance bane. Likewise, Guard will be slightly more useful for combating Bold Fighter users as well as Heady Blade mages and Reinhardt.

A low investment set that requires no inherits from heroes unable to be obtained as 3 star units.

Kana's innate Water Breath, while lacking the flexibility of Lightning Breath, is still an extremely powerful tool, and arguably the second-strongest inheritable breath in the game. Generally in this case, Speed-investing will be Kana's most powerful option, preventing as many enemy attacks as possible, and ensuring activations of Moonbow should one choose not to use Quick Riposte.

Reposition, Swap, and Draw Back are all useful assist options. Many of them can be obtained at the same time as other skills below, for extra fodder efficiency.

Thanks to Water Breath's lack of a cooldown penalty, Kana can make use of the lower-cooldown Moonbow to strong effect, instantly activating it against any enemy she doubles. Of course, she comes with Draconic Aura by default, which can be kept.

Fierce Stance is Kana's default A passive, and while not as build-defining as an A slot Breath effect is still absolutely a fantastic skill. Alternatively, Fury can grant a useful boost to all stats, great for a unit like Kana who makes use of all of them, most notably a further increase to her Speed.

Quick Riposte remains a fantastic option on Kana, letting her always double back on enemy phase, even through Speed ties and skills such as Wary Fighter. As a bonus, both Quick Riposte 2 and Swap can be obtained from a single Subaki. Guard remains a useful option as well, as are other skills that add to her overall sustain such as Renewal.

Spur Atk is a useful C slot skill that notably, thanks to her default access to Spur Atk 2, can be upgraded to its third level alongside the inheritance of Reposition from a single Barst.

As a seal, Attack +3 can pair nicely with Fierce Stance to heavily boost her damage output, especially in disadvantageous color matchups or against high Resistance green units. Speed +3 can also even further boost her ability to initiate on Player Phase. A simple seal such as Threaten Atk is also useful to add even more bulk to a tanky unit like Kana.

Introduction

The adorable daughter of Fire Emblem Fates' protagonist Corrin, Kana is a green breath unit that has an incredibly impressive stat spread, the lowest stat of which is her 26 Resistance, itself not shabby in the slightest. As an infantry dragon, this also means that Kana has access to Lightning Breath, adding her to the exclusive list of units that can use utilize the destructive combination of both Distant Counter and an A slot Breath passive. Her bulk gives her the ability tank both physical and magical enemies alike, a rather rare and very appreciated quality among units, and her Speed gives her the ability to act as a frighteningly potent unit on Player Phase as well, giving Kana some of the highest versatility among all units in the game.

Kana does however come with a few kew drawbacks. Kana has a crippling weakness to dragon-slaying weapons, especially red ones which are by far the most common and have been growing increasingly popular. While blue dragons have the triangle advantage to sometimes overturn this matchup, Kana does not have any sort of potential advantage here.

Additionally, Kana's optimal build is powerful for a good reason: it makes use of several expensive skills. Reaching her maximum potential likely means investments from multiple five-star heroes. While Kana is absurdly flexible and incredibly powerful, it is a lot to give to such a rare hero that may be difficult to merge and find optimal IVs for.

All of that being said, given the investment, Kana is a worthwhile addition to nearly any team, holding the spot of what is likely the strongest green infantry unit presently available in the game.

Strengths

Great Speed tier

Kana's 34 Speed is in a great spot. It is very rare for units to have a natural Speed higher than 38, and many units with Speeds around this level may have lower Attack stats that must instead be prioritized. This means a Kana that invests fully in her Speed will deny doubles from the majority of units she encounters, typically only having to worry about Brave weapons or skills that grant guaranteed follow-ups. This investment also makes Kana a surprising Player Phase fighter. Able to switch up her playstyle on the fly, there are very little units that can viably wall her off completely.

Extremely bulky

40 HP, 33 Defense, and 26 Resistance collectively combine together to create a unit who is able to take both physical and magical damage with a good degree of confidence, especially if she is rarely taking more than one hit.

Easy Distant Counter access

One huge reason being a breath weapon user is such an advantage is because it means access to the game's sole inheritable Distant Counter weapon, Lightning Breath. The weapon is also none too rare, with Nowi and Adult Tiki both available at three-star rarity. This is a fantastic benefit to such a tanky unit, especially as it opens up the ability to combo Distant Counter with powerful A slot skills like Steady Breath.

Adaptive damage

A second huge blanket benefit to breath weapon users is the bonus effect that all breath weapons obtained as of the 2.0 update—the ability to target the lower of any ranged opponent's Defense or Resistance. This is amazing for a Distant Counter magical weapon, as it is very common for most high-Resistance units be ranged and have low Defense. Dragons can exploit this factor, taking down almost all ranged units in the game with relative ease.

Dragon-boosting skills

As a dragon, Kana can benefit from powerful buffing skills such as Fortify Dragons and Ward Dragons. This also makes Kana one of the only infantry units that can benefit from such skills, normally exclusive to those of movement types like cavalry. Kana herself already comes packaged with the Goad Dragons skill, which makes her easy to slot on any team that aims to abuse the power of multiple dragons.

Weaknesses

Dragon vulnerability

Unfortunately, as a Dragon, Kana has to deal with the the existence of Dragon-effective weaponry. To make matters worse, the overwhelming majority of effective weaponry is on sword units, which Kana already has a triangle weakness to. Blue dragons can sometimes aim to use their triangle advantage to overcome this weakness, but Kana has virtually no chance here—she must simply avoid them at all costs. Similarly, without Resistance investment, Kana may also find herself falling to Naga and Divine Naga users. In fact, as there are currently no blue Dragon-effective weapons in the game, Kana's color doesn't give her any favors against any of the game's dragon slayers.

Demands heavy investment

Performing at her best means Kana needs both a new weapon and one of the rare A slot breath passives. A contribution of Quick Riposte 3 or Guard 3 may also be desired, both of which are currently exclusive to five-star units. Aether, too, is limited to five-star units. Her favorite Sacred Seals are also the ones that are already in some of the highest demand. This can add up to make investment in Kana quite expensive.

Competition with other green dragons

Myrrh and Fallen Robin (M) are already two of the strongest dragons on the market, and both are green breath users. For a dragon team, this can sometimes make Kana a rather hard sell, as their unique movement types and exclusive weapons may offer unique utility to the team which Kana can not.

Attack leaves a bit to be desired

While not awful, Kana's 30 Attack isn't the highest. Among dragons, only Ninian (who has the unique Dance ability) and Female Corrin have lower, and in fact Corrin will reach 31 with an Attack boon. Thankfully Kana's powerful Specials as well as her weapon's "adaptive damage" trait will often make up for it, but there will be cases where she wished it was just a little higher, and may show itself when fighting high-Resistance melee units.

Team Options

Kana is a powerful green mixed phase unit who can handle a multitude of different threats. Even red units are not off the table for her. Even so, her best allies will likely be those that can simply handle her disadvantageous matchups much more easily, as well as those whose weaknesses Kana already covers.

  • Offensive lancers: Kana needs a teammate to fend off enemy red units with too much magical or mixed bulk. Lance units with high offensive presence like Effie, Ephraim, Cordelia, Tana, and Shigure can all do this to great effect.

  • Blue magic tanks: Units that can take hits from red mages will also be very appreciated. Micaiah, Fjorm, Female Morgan, and Saias are just some examples of such. Linde and Delthea can also do this to great effect while buffing Kana with their Dark Aura tome.

  • Frail red units: Kana is able to take out nearly all blue units with little problem. This means red units that don't have too much bulk can fight to maximum effect with Kana as an ally, such as Sacred Memories Eirika, Lilina, and many Falchion users like Lucina and Marth.

  • Dragon units: Dragon-exclusive buffing skills can also make Kana quite powerful on a team with other powerful dragon units like Young Tiki, Adult Tiki, Nowi, Ninian, and Legendary Female Robin.

Counters

Weapons that deal effective damage to Kana will hit her extremely hard, possibly even killing her in one shot. Kana is also liable to get punished by any sort of nuke from a red unit, and also won't be able to do much to melee units with too high a resistance.

  • Dragon-effective weapons: The elephant in the room. Users of Falchions and the like will tear a hole in her. Alm, Lucina, Masked Marth, Marth, Chrom, Exalted Chrom, and Roy are examples of such units. Julia and Deirdre can also be quite the bother with Naga and Divine Naga.

  • Red nukers: Soliel, Lilina, Sanaki, Elincia, and World of Thracia Reinhardt are just some of the high offense red units that can eat right through Kana's bulk with high Attack stats and a color advantage.

  • High Resistance reds: Kana will barely be able to deal any damage to melee red units with too much Resistance or ranged units with mixed bulk like Fir, Eliwood, Young Tiki, Eirika, Sophia, and Winter Tharja.
