Boons
- +ATK: An Attack boon is an excellent choice for capitalizing on her already great Attack stat and is ideal for one-shot builds revolving around the use of her native Poison Dagger or Kitty Paddle.
- +SPD: Taking a Speed boon bumps up Kagero’s middling base Speed stat of 32 to a more workable 35, and is ideal for offensive builds that are reliant upon her ability to consistently double.
Neutral
- RES: Though raising it is not a priority, Kagero’s Resistance stat is serviceable and gives her the ability to tank a single hit from a mage should she need to; it also allows her to make decent use of Ploys.
Banes
- -DEF: At a neutral physical bulk of 53, dropping Kagero’s Defense stat is ideal as it is too low to ever make a difference in her match-ups.
- -HP: An HP bane is also an acceptable alternative, as Kagero should rarely be getting hit due to her overall low damage soak.

- Sacred Seal: Speed +3 / Heavy Blade / Flashing Blade
This set aims to turn Kagero into an extremely potent force during the Player Phase, relying on her ability to double in order to consistently activate her Special. As such, a Speed boon is ideal for this build; this boon combined with the Speed +3 seal and a Speed refine on her weapon brings her to an impressive 40 Speed without an A skill or outside support.
Low cooldown Specials like Glimmer and Moonbow are especially effective for this build, though the choice between the two is match-up dependent; Glimmer works best against enemies whose bulk lies mainly in their HP while Moonbow is best against foes with a high Defense stat.
Moving on to weapon choice, the Barb Shuriken/Kagami Mochi make for a fantastic weapon on Kagero, allowing her to activate her Special in each combat where she doubles with its consistent -1 cooldown. Lethal Carrot is also a powerful alternative, granting her +10 damage whenever her Special activates. However, using Lethal Carrot also requires the use of the Heavy Blade or Flashing Blade seal in order for her Special to activate as regularly as it would if using the Barb Shuriken/Kagami Mochi.
Aside from regular movement Assists, it is worth considering running Ardent Sacrifice as her chosen Assist to enable her to safely reach Desperation’s HP threshold without the need for her to tank a hit. Atk/Spd Solo is her A slot of choice, allowing her to maximize her offensive presence with its significant +6/+6 boost to her offenses. In addition, as this build primarily focuses on Kagero's capabilities in the Player Phase, she will typically be away from her allies regardless, allowing her to reliably activate the skill's effect. Swift Sparrow and Fury are good alternatives should Atk/Spd Solo be unavailable, with the latter in particular having the added benefit of improving her low overall bulk and gives her an easier time in using ploys. If making use of Ardent Sacrifice, Brazen Atk/Spd is also a strong candidate for her A slot skill as a single use of Ardent Sacrifice will immediately drop her into Brazen’s and Desperation’s HP threshold.
For her C slot, Def Ploy is a great option to boost her damage output and is likely to activate against opponents she needs it the most with (high Defense tanks). However, it should be used with caution if Kagero is running Moonbow as the debuff does lower Moonbow’s effectiveness slightly. Otherwise, Kagero can run any C slot that compliments her team composition.

A Player Phase oriented build that capitalizes on Kagero’s ability to one-shot opponents through the use of her native Poison Dagger, the Kitty Paddle, or any of the other effective-damage daggers such as the Sky and Cloud Maiougi. Such weapons are fantastic options and pair well with her already fantastic base Attack stat, granting her a 50% Attack increase against opponents infantry units, mages, armors, and dragonstone users respectively. To further boost her ability to one-shot such opponents, it is recommended to take an Attack boon coupled with the Attack +3 seal.
Glimmer is a fantastic choice for a Special and scales well with the effective damage boost from her chosen weapon, but does worse against opponents that Kagero doesn’t do effective damage to. For more consistency across a wider variety of opponents, Moonbow is also an option though ideally, Kagero will only be attacking opponents she can one-shot as she lacks the bulk to tank any kind of retaliation.
Death Blow is her ideal A slot, supplementing her Attack stat even further, and offers her the highest chance of killing her opponent with a single strike. Her B slot with this build is extremely flexible, leaving it open to a variety of different options. Chill Def is a great option thanks to the fact that units have become increasingly bulkier and harder to one-shot with the introduction of weapon refines; however, it is not a guarantee that Chill Def will target a foe who she does effective damage against and can be inconsistent at times. Chill Def may also find its uses with the Kitty Paddle against bulky mages such as Winter Tharja but generally, it is unnecessary. Instead, she has the option of running Cancel Affinity in case she ever faces off against a TA Raven mage. Otherwise, she is free to run any B slot that could possibly compliment her allies, such as Wings of Mercy or a Chill skill.
Like her B slot, her C slot is flexible as well and can be filled in with a Hone/Spur/Drive of one’s choice. Drive Spd is a particularly great option that is readily available in the 4* pool and scores well in Arena.
Introduction
Once considered the strongest dagger unit in the game, Kagero has definitely fallen quite a bit as the game progressed. Though she is still in possession of a decent offensive stat spread of 35/32, she has been thoroughly outclassed, lacking the offensive prowess or utility that other new dagger units possess. Her low overall damage soak does her no favors either and renders her unable to initiate against DC users she cannot kill in one round of combat for fear of being killed in retaliation.
However, the recent addition of offensive daggers such as Lethal Carrot and Barb Shuriken has breathed new life into many dagger units with Kagero being no exception. With new toys at her disposal, Kagero finds herself able to become an incredibly powerful unit in the Player Phase, capable of shredding teams apart with the proper set-up and support. Even though she does have her well-defined weaknesses, keep her out of harm’s way and Kagero still proves to be a strong offensive presence in her own right.
Strengths
Good Attack
Currently tied with her alternate version, Kagero boasts the second highest base Attack stat of all daggers. In addition to ensuring that her damage output is generally rather high, her good Attack stat gives her some flexibility with her builds, giving her the option to go all in for one-shot builds or to invest in her Speed stat for more general use builds.
Decent Resistance
Though not extraordinary, her Resistance stat is high enough to merit the use of Ploys, which she can use to enhance both her own and her teammates’ overall performance. It also lets her tank a single hit from a mage except for buffed Blade tome wielders.
Weaknesses
Low Overall Bulk
With a horrid physical bulk of 53, Kagero has an incredibly difficult time dealing with Distant Counter users that she cannot OHKO or ORKO. Even her magical bulk is rather lacking, as her incredibly low HP takes away from her ability to tank more than a single magical hit.
Outclassed
Having started out as the strongest dagger unit in the game, Kagero has slowly fallen out of favor for dagger units with a stronger offensive presence like Spring Kagero or who provide more utility like Sothe and Performing Olivia.
Team Options
Counters
As a unit with low damage soak, Kagero is an easy target to pick off so long as one initiates against her. Player Phase oriented archers and strong melee units who can apply pressure on her are particularly effective counters. Mages who run the tried-and-true Triangle Adept/Raven tome build are also great counters, shutting down her high Attack through Weapon Triangle Advantage.
- Offensive Archers: Particularly those who wield Player Phase weapons like Brave Bow and Firesweep Bow, offensive archers such as Brave Lyn, Hinoka (WF), and Halloween Jakob exploit Kagero’s weak Enemy Phase to easily defeat her.
- Strong Melee: Kagero’s paper-thin Defense stat allows strong melee units such as Tana, Elincia, and Raven to kill her in just a single round of combat.
- Raven Tomes: Mages such as Lyon, Sophia, and Spring Camilla who commonly make use of a Triangle Adept/Raven build can easily dispose of colorless units, with Kagero being no exception even with her decent Resistance.

With the meta shifting over to more and more horse and flier units, Kagero has had a slight fall from grace as one of the more prominent offensive colorless units. Don't get it twisted though, Kagero shouldn't be slept on as she will completely maim any Infantry unit that dares to do so.
Kagero prefers an Atk boon as she can net more ORKOs on infantry with Life and Death/Death Blow. With Life and Death/Windsweep (Watersweep)/Phantom Speed Sacred Seal, Kagero can ensure that she has enough speed to activate Windsweep to circumvent DC users and ranged Vantage units.
Savage Blow is taken as the C skill of choice for spread damage against non-infantry units, but she can opt to run Threaten Def as well.
In the case that you want her to act as a mage killer on both player and enemy phase, a Fury/Vantage/Atk or Quickened Pulse Seal build will suffice.

My debuffing Kagero build. With Emblem teams a common encounter in the arena, I swapped the 5MT Poison Dagger+ for a 9MT Smoke Dagger+. Paired with Def Ploy and Atk Ploy Seal, Kagero is still able to KO many heroes, and also gets some important horse kills, such as Reinhardt. Smoke Dagger debuffs other nearby enemies so teammates can easily dispatch. Vantage could be subbed out for Bowbreaker if Brave Lyn is also an issue for your team.
Recommended to run along side buffers, such as Eirika, Ephraim, and/or Brave Lucina.

Moonbow | C | Threaten Def 3 |
Life and Death 3 guarantees ORKOs on all common B!Ike variants, DC or Steady stance for all of the IVs as long as Kagero has been honed and B!Ike has been threatened and disregarding merges and fortifying effects. Without a hone, Kagero only beats non-DC B!Ike.
Cancel Affinity is meant to take out TA Raven mages in the arena who are sometimes run on defense. She certainly demolished TA MRobin. While not immediately common, TA Raven+ Camilla has been seen on defense teams and Kagero can manage to bait and kill this Camilla. Similarly with TA Raven+ Cecilia who are sometimes seen over their blade counterparts.
The key draw of this Kagero is the ability to eliminate B!Ike in one round player phase--something only red mages and specifically designated Axebreaker redlords can also lay claim. The benefit is that after a hone, she also is capable of one-shotting common threatening melee like Fury 3 Ryoma, Ike, B!Lucina, and Ephraim who remain on strong common defensive cores. She is also capable of even baiting out Raven Mages who have begun to appear on certain team comps.
While a niche pick, she certainly can still carry her weight against typical balanced defense teams who will usually carry one of the aforementioned threats and pairs well in a team composition with a specialized DPS capable of tearing through Armored units and potentially flier units. Units like Reinhardt and C!Lyn come to mind, who much appreciate B!Ike's removal, and in BB+ C!Lyn's case, Fury3 Ryoma who can potentially tank BB+ C!Lyn.

Just as a note my Kagero is a Level 40+1, so her HP and ATK is a bit higher. So as you can see she has a great boon in ATK which is what you really need if you want to run her however my previous one was -ATK and she worked just fine with the help of some buffs.
First off her weapon is what makes her awesome, because it does bonus damage to infantry units which at least at this point in the game is at least 50% of units in the game are that. So the chances of running into one are really good. Just keep in mind that if you run into Robin (M) or Cecilia and armor units stay away! Those are three of Kagero's biggest threats but outside of that she can also hold her own against cavalry and flier units as well.
As for her A Passive I chose to run Life and Death 3, a very expensive ability and LoD2 could work just as fine. I have her set up as a glass cannon of sorts, try and do as much damage in one go, you could go Death Blow 3 but i prefer to have the extra 5 SPD and having the extra DEF and RES isn't going to help her in the long run. for other options Fury 3 can work especially if you are running Desperation 3.
The only one skill that should be on her is Desperation 3, the fact that she is a glass cannon unit you need to make sure that she can kill a unit every time she attacks.
For her C Slot it can vary, Threaten Spd, and Def are the two best IMO. However Hone abilities like ATK, SPD or DEF can also work to support other allies. And if you want to be a little different Savage Blow could be fun as well.
As for her support skill I recommend Ardent Sacrifice if she has a bane or neutral HP stat but if she has a boon in HP maybe Reciprocal Aid, this is to ensure she gets to the Desperation threshold.
The final skill I have yet to mention is the Special ability which can be a variety of but the best one would be Moonbow due to its low charge time but if you have a +SPD and LoD3 with a Quickened pulse seal you could run luna instead.

Draconic Aura | C | Threaten Def 3 |
A player-phase Kagero build designed to counter -raven tome threats.
TA3 Robin obviously gets shrekt by this Kagero, but this also enables her to attack some of her hard counters like mounted raven mages. Cecilia is the most common, but -raven Reinhardts/Olwens/Leos are not unheard of.
Obviously with full horse meme buffs, it might be unwise to attack mounted mages with this ninja, but the AI isn't all that great at keeping its horse friends together.
+Atk is chosen for the boon, because unless you run L&D3 or Darting Blow 3, Kagero won't double all that often and, crucially, won't need to double all that often thanks to her weapon.
With +Atk, she can one-shot units that would cause her grievous harm on the counterattack like Ryoma, whom she will be unlikely to double even with +Spd unless she runs the risky L&D build — and even then, you will need Desperation to land the second attack. Not really worth it.
-HP is taken as a boon, given that her HP is pretty awful anyway, but -Def won't hurt much either. -Res would be unfortunate, as 28 res is good enough to bait a lot of infantry mages with, given that she'll one-shot them and thus not worry about being doubled by them.
Poison Dagger+ should need no explanation. It's about the only thing that makes a dagger unit viable as an offensive unit.
Draw Back is selected for the assist because I think it works best with ranged units, while Reposition works best with melee units. They both work fine with either unit type, but considering your ninja will likely be behind your melee units, Draw Back can help get them out of harm's way while not compromising your ninja's position.
Draconic Aura is selected because Kagero's attack stat, with DB3 and her weapon included, will hit 49, yielding 16 extra dmg if you're initiating the attack. Luna works just as well. Moonbow is never a bad thing but might not secure a decisive amount of extra damage, especially considering that Kagero will spend a fair amount of her time attacking fairly squishy units.
For the A-slot, Death Blow 3 plays to her strengths and to the recommend approach when using this build, and if you wanted her to have a little extra punch and more res-tankiness for enemy phase then go with Fury in the A-slot.
For the B-slot, Cancel Affinity because that's what this build is all about. It might seem like a big sacrifice, sending Mathilda away, but she's available as a 4* and she's pretty much garbage as a unit anyway. Sad, considering how OP she should have been.
The C-slot is flexible. Threaten Def 3 works nicely, or you could go for a Hone/Fortify depending on your play style. Breath of Life is even an option if you haven't anything else to give her and need an incidental healer.
Obviously Vantage is king when it comes to baiting, but if you want -raven coverage, you'll need to play Kagero more offensively.
It is worthwhile, too, as raven tomes are fairly common and Robin, while hardly defining the meta like Reinhardt, is a common adversary because of his multiple uses within a team as red and colorless check.
