Assets

  • +SPD: Boasting a rather solid base Speed stat of 36, Kaden benefits immensely from elevating it further with an Asset to supplement his reasonable offensive capabilities and secure his ability to perform follow-up attacks. This also serves to heighten his raw survivability through a greater chance of denying his opponent’s own follow-up attack and is especially useful in the possible scenario that he needs to tank a hit in the Enemy Phase or when unable to activate the follow-up negating property of his PRF, such as when not transformed or fighting against a foe equipped with Null Follow-Up.
  • +ATK: Alternatively, Kaden can make surprisingly good use of an Attack Asset to enhance his damage output considerably, with this being a particularly noteworthy option when making use of more offensively oriented builds, though it will still generally be less useful than a Speed Asset.

Neutral

  • HP / DEF: Given the fact that he will most commonly be fighting against physical damage dealing foes, Kaden prefers to retain his HP and Defense stats intact as to not hinder his ability to effectively deal with such opponents. An HP Flaw can be particularly debilitating in this regard when utilizing an unmerged Kaden as it lowers the stat by four points as opposed to the typical three.

Flaws

  • -RES: As the least important of all his stats, Kaden can safely take a Resistance Flaw without causing too much of an impact on his overall performance.

Kaden’s unique personal weapon, Kitsune Fang, grants him absolutely stellar supportive capabilities, translating all field buffs on him into a two-range in-combat buff for his allies. Although this weapon lends itself to various different applications, it sees exceptionally powerful use when utilizing Kaden alongside fellow cavalry or beast units, something which this build aims to capitalize on -- thanks to his access to class-exclusive buffs, Kaden can provide his allies with massive stat boosts, essentially doubling the effects of skills such as Hone Cavalry, and dramatically improve his team’s overall performance with ease. Given Kaden’s primarily support focused playstyle, he can function perfectly fine with any choice of IVs, though Assets to his Speed or Attack remain preferable options if available.

For his Special, those that scale off of his opponent’s Defense such as Moonbow and Luna will generally be his best options, with the choice of which to use ultimately boiling down to a matter of personal preference. Of the two, Moonbow offers him a weaker boost to his damage output but comes with an extremely short Special cooldown to circumvent this, allowing him to activate it quite frequently, whereas Luna trades consistency in exchange for more raw power.

Fury 4 is an excellent choice of skill to utilize in Kaden’s A slot as its appreciable +4 overall stat boost enables him to simultaneously enjoy a considerable boost to his survivability as well his offensive presence, virtually guaranteeing his ability to engage in at least one or two rounds of combat if necessary. If it is unavailable, however, Fury 3 is a perfectly fine budget alternative and will generally produce similar results. While somewhat inflexible in nature, Triangle Adept is a decent option to make Kaden much more specialized and allow him to perform as a dedicated check against blue opponents who may prove to be a formidable threat to his allies.

Kaden’s B slot is typically best filled by a Chill skill to further his ability to support his teammates. Chill Def is a particularly noteworthy candidate when using him alongside other beast units or melee cavaliers as it helps improve their damage output significantly against otherwise pesky physically bulky units through its devastating -7 Defense debuff on the foe with the highest Defense stat on the opposing team. Chill Atk and Chill Spd are excellent options as well that have much more applicability than the aforementioned and may even be preferred depending on what his team composition consists of, strengthening his team’s ability to effectively handle sustained offensive pressure and perform follow-up attacks respectively. Wings of Mercy can also be considered to allow Kaden to warp next to weakened allies who can then benefit from his strong buffing abilities to turn the tide of a battle.

Class-exclusive buffs make for Kaden’s ideal choice of C slot skill for this build, with in-combat buffs such as Goad Cavalry and Goad Beasts being especially great options to augment his allies offensive potential and build upon the boosts provided by Kitsune Fang. Lastly, any of the Drive seals can be taken to heighten his supportive capabilities even further.

Kaden’s supportive capabilities are not strictly limited to teams centered around beast or cavalry allies, however, and can also be put to remarkable use within mixed team compositions. In a similar vein to the first set, this build aims to capitalize on Kaden’s ability to maximize his teammates combat prowess, albeit with a few slight alterations to better suit mixed teams’ lack of access to class-exclusive buffs, though the two still generally play the same way. Accordingly, Assets to either his Attack or Speed stats are still recommended but are not entirely necessary for Kaden to function properly as he is still primarily a support-focused unit.

Specials that scale off of his opponent’s Defense stat such as Moonbow and Luna remain his best options, with the choice of which to use ultimately boiling down to a matter of personal preference once more. Fury 4 is an exceptional choice of A slot skill that allows him to gain a substantial boost to his offensive presence and durability concurrently, though Fury 3 makes for a suitable alternative should it be unavailable. Triangle Adept, while somewhat limiting in that it essentially eliminates any chance of Kaden surviving a round of combat against a red foe, is another decent option to specialize him as an effective counter to opposing blue units.

The most notable consideration to make with this build lies in Kaden’s choice of B slot skill. Rather than make use of Chills to provide buffing and debuffing support simultaneously, Link skills are taken instead to allow his allies to benefit from insane boosts to multiple stats at once, functioning as a way to mimic the effects of class-exclusive buffs. Atk/Def Link and Atk/Spd Link are Kaden’s two most notable options, granting any ally on whom he uses a movement Assist on with effective +12 Atk/Def and +12 Atk/Spd boosts respectively, provided that they stay within two spaces of him. Additionally, do keep in mind that while powerful, this does come at the cost of essentially wasting Kaden’s turn. On a budget, his native Spd/Res Link can be considered as well. One also has the option of running Wings of Mercy to improve his maneuverability and aid weakened allies who will undoubtedly appreciate receiving his support.

Joint Hone Spd is a wonderful choice of C slot skill, synergizing particularly well Kitsune Fang, and enables any adjacent allies to enjoy an impressive +10 Speed boost right off the bat. Wave skills such as Even Atk Wave and Even Def Wave (which is also available as a seal) also function in a similar manner, however, they are more limited in that they are only active in either odd-numbered or even-numbered turns -- but conversely, Wave skills actually buff Kaden regardless of whether or not he has adjacent allies, granting greater flexibility with positioning in comparison to Joint Hone Spd. Drives and Tactics also make for solid alternatives that can be utilized as his chosen C slot skill, seal, or both depending on personal preference and what best suits his team composition.

Introduction

Chief of Kitsune Hamlet, father to Selkie, and proud narcissist, Kaden makes his debut alongside his daughter as a green beast unit with a relatively balanced statline, most notable of which being his solid base Speed stat of 36. While not exceptional, his bulk is generally sufficient enough such that he can typically engage in combat without being outright OHKO’d by opposing foes, being able to at the very least trade a blow or two. Additionally, despite not having an actual mount, Kaden is treated as the equivalent of a cavalry unit amongst beasts, granting him access to multiple class-exclusive buffs as well as fantastic mobility. These factors all combine to grant him decent combat potential, however, Kaden’s true allure lies in the power of his unique personal weapon.

Kaden’s unique personal weapon, Kitsune Fang, takes a far more supportive approach than his statline would imply, transforming all field buffs on him into two-range in-combat buffs for his allies. Combined with his access to multiple class-exclusive buffs, as well as his ability to fit incredibly well into mixed team compositions thanks to his status as a cavalry unit, Kaden can make absolutely fantastic use of Kitsune Fang to elevate his allies’ stats to insanely high levels and grant them a significant advantage against any foe. Furthermore, the fact that the buffs that Kitsune Fang provides are in-combat boosts means that they can be heightened to even further extents through the use of skills like Drives -- simply put, Kaden’s supportive capabilities are exceptional.

This is not to mention Kaden’s ability to transform into his kitsune form when either adjacent to another beast unit or dragonstone wielder or not adjacent to any units at all at the start of the turn. Upon transformation, Kaden gains +2 Atk as well as the ability to deny his opponent’s follow-up attack and inflict a substantial -4/-4 in-combat Atk/Def debuff in the Player Phase, allowing initiating against foes to be a much safer and more viable course of action. Kaden’s main weaknesses derive from the downfalls that come with being a cavalry unit, namely having to maneuver around terrains like trenches and forests (which is rather ironic given the fact that he is literally a fox) and being inherently weak against cavalry-effective weaponry. Nonetheless, Kaden remains a phenomenal unit to his own right and is undoubtedly amongst one of the best buffers in the entire game, making him a welcome and powerful addition to any team willing to have him.

Strengths

Kitsune Fang

Kaden’s unique personal weapon, Kitsune Fang, is an exceptional support weapon that converts all field buffs on him into a two-range in-combat buff for his allies. When utilized properly, Kaden can grant tremendous stat boosts to his allies and augment his whole team’s overall performance significantly.

Good Speed

Kaden’s base Speed stat of 36 is quite decent and provides him with a solid foundation for both performing and denying follow-up attacks through normal means, granting him reasonable offensive potential as well as good survivability.

Cavalry

In addition to having access to cavalry-exclusive buffs, Kaden’s status as a cavalry unit provides him with unprecedented versatility in the way that he can support his team, as his extremely wide range practically guarantees his ability to reach and buff allies from even the furthest of distances.

Beast

As a cavalry beast unit, Kaden’s transformation grants him the ability to deny his opponent’s follow-up attack and inflict a substantial -4/-4 in-combat Atk/Def debuff upon initiation, making engagements in the Player Phase much safer. In addition, this also allows him access to even more class-exclusive buffs such as Hone Beasts.

Versatile

As a direct result of the many different applications his unique personal weapon lends itself to, Kaden is extremely versatile in the way that he can function and support his team, allowing his role in any given team composition to be rather flexible.

Weaknesses

Cavalry

Kaden’s status as a cavalry unit comes with its own fair share of detriments, namely his ironic inability to traverse through certain terrain such as forests in addition to being inherently weak against cavalry-effective weaponry. However, given his primarily support-focused role in any given team composition, these weaknesses do not detract too heavily from his overall level of effectiveness.

Team Options

  • Cavalry: Fellow cavalry allies like Hríd, Legendary Ephraim, and Valentine’s Soren can make fantastic use of Kaden’s supportive capabilities to maximize their combat prowess, being able to gain massive stat boosts through the combined use of class-exclusive buffs and Kitsune Fang.
  • Beasts: In addition to being able to similarly benefit from receiving his support, beast units such as Keaton, Tibarn, and Selkie are able to fulfill the adjacency requirements for him to transform.
  • Dragonstone Users: Dragonstone users such as Ninian (who also doubles as a refresher), Adrift Corrin (F), and Nowi can also satisfy these requirements and allow him to transform when adjacent.
  • Offensive Units: Offensively oriented heroes greatly appreciate having Kaden as an ally, utilizing his potent in-combat buff support to effectively skyrocket their damage output and offensive potential. Some notable examples include Legendary Marth, New Year Gunnthrá, and Legendary Eirika.
  • Strong Blues: Strong blues like Winter Ephraim, Summer Camilla, and Ophelia who can provide Kaden with Weapon Triangle coverage and safeguard him from the threat of otherwise pesky reds are welcome team options as well.

Counters

  • Strong Reds: Strong reds such as Karla, Ares, Brave Celica, Valentine’s Ike, Owain, and Alm perform as formidable counters to Kaden thanks to their inherent advantage against green units.
  • High Defense Tanks: Despite his decent offensive potential, high Defense tanks like Valentine’s Greil, Brave Ephraim, Legendary Hector, Helbindi, Winter Lissa, and Winter Chrom can quite easily shrug off Kaden’s attacks and stop him dead in his tracks.
  • Effective Damage: Thanks to his status as a cavalry unit, Gerome, Gray, Hoshidan Summer Micaiah, and other common wielders of cavalry-effective weaponry will typically have no problem in promptly taking him down.
