With his naturally high defensive stats combined with his personal weapon, Joshua can make for a great user of Distant Counter.
Distant Counter will allow Joshua to retaliate against any foe who attacks him at range, skills like Sacae’s Blessing permitting. Joshua’s solid 33 Resistance with Audhulma plus the Distant Def Sacred Seal will allow him to reach 39 Resistance when attacked by mages, allowing him to easily defend against green mages while also resisting red mages fairly well. He will also have 36 Defense against any archer or ninja who attacks him too. Quick Riposte in turn will allow Joshua to obtain a guaranteed follow-up attack against anyone who attacks him.
Given Joshua’s great Resistance, he can also make good use of the ploy skills. Def Ploy will let him deal more damage against anyone affected, Spd Ploy will reduce the enemies chances of doubling Joshua and Atk Ploy will reduce the damage any affected unit deals. Which one you want is mostly up to player preference.
For his Special, Glimmer works great against mages as it will in general help more than Moonbow would due to mages usually having low Defense with some exceptions. This being said, Moonbow is still a great choice thanks to its low cooldown. While it wouldn't be activating as consistently as Moonbow or Glimmer, Blue Flame is a very strong Special that gives a huge power boost when Joshua is adjacent to an ally, making it another solid choice. The Assist slot is fairly open to player preference, though Reposition is a nice general choice.
If you want, you can replace the Distant Def Sacred Seal with the Quick Riposte, Def Ploy, or Atk Ploy Sacred Seal. While this comes at the cost of losing the benefits of Distant Def, this will free up one of Joshua's skill slots depending on which Sacred Seal you use. You can run double ploys if you use either the Atk or Def Ploy Sacred Seal or you can run Quick Riposte with another B slot such as Wrath or Vantage. It is still recommended to use Distant Def as the Sacred Seal, but these alternative Sacred Seal options are there as options for a more creative take on this build.

Joshua’s overall balanced stats lend well to running a frontline fighter build, designed to be versatile and effective in most scenarios.
While Audhulma is effective with this set, opting for a Slaying Edge instead will allow Joshua to refine it in order to boost a stat that will help him more with this set. Fury boosts Joshua’s already good overall stats further, making him more effective across the board in terms of offense and defense. He can also make use of his default Close Def thanks to his good defensive stats. Wrath allows Joshua to proc his Special faster and deal extra damage when it activates, making it a great choice for him. Quick Riposte is another good option, particularly if paired with Close Def for that guaranteed follow-up while Desperation is a good option for a more aggressive focus. As for Sacred Seal, boosting his Speed with the Speed Sacred Seal is an effective option, but you can also run the Quick Riposte Sacred Seal in combination with Wrath as while the HP range in which both skills are active is extremely limited, having both on the same character allows for Joshua to make use of Quick Riposte while on high HP then utilize Wrath as his HP gets lower.
With Wrath, a good Special is also needed with it. Thanks to their cooldown of one with a Slaying Edge or Audhulma, both Moonbow and Glimmer make for strong choices. Blue Flame is another solid option, given that Wrath will help Joshua to charge it very consistently, particularly on Enemy Phase. The Assist slot is open to player preference, with Reposition being a safe choice for most units.
Finish off this build with a Ploy of your choice with Def Ploy, Spd Ploy, or Atk Ploy all being viable options and you’ll have a nice package that can attack, defend and support all in one. You can also opt to use either Def or Atk Ploy as Joshua's Sacred Seal as opposed to Speed +3 or Quick Riposte, allowing Joshua to run double ploy skills.

Sacred Seal: Speed +3
With good Attack and Speed, Joshua can go for full offense if you so desire.
With Life and Death 3, Joshua is boosted to 52 Attack and 40 Speed. While Audhulma may be a 16 might weapon, opting instead for a Slaying Edge will allow Joshua to take a Speed refine, placing him up to 43 Speed. However, Audhulma is still more than viable for this build. Meanwhile, he still has decent defenses with 25 Defense and 23 Resistance (28 with Audhulma). If you don’t want to suffer a defensive penalty, Swift Sparrow is also a great option. Desperation allows Joshua to make any follow-up attacks immediately, so long as he’s below 75% HP and does actually double in the first place. Wrath is another good option to get more power out of your Special. Since he’ll most likely be in the middle of battle, Threaten Def makes for a good C slot to lower the Defense of any enemy within 2 spaces of him without having to rely on having more Resistance than them.
Both Moonbow and Luna are strong Specials for an offensive playstyle, Moonbow in particular thanks to the one charge cooldown it’ll have with a Slaying Edge or Audhulma. The Assist is open to player preference. Reposition is a fine general choice that’ll allow Joshua to help with unit positioning.
While other sword units such as Ayra are better suited for aggressive setups like this, Joshua can still run this set well and enjoy strong offensive power while still maintaining respectable defenses.

Sacred Seal: Close Def / Quick Riposte
Thanks to his good defensive capabilities, Joshua can work very well in a defensive setup.
While Audhulma is perfectly viable here, running a Slaying Edge will give free choice in what stat you want Joshua’s weapon to boost, as well as some extra HP. Either a Speed or Defense refine works nicely. Audhulma will be your best bet for Arena scoring or for using Ploy skills though. The Assist slot is completely open, with any option being viable. Reposition is a nice general choice for most units. For Special, both Blue Flame and Aether make fantastic choices. Blue Flame is an immensely powerful Special when adjacent to an ally while Aether is great for dealing damage and helping Joshua to sustain himself. Aether is only advised with Steady Breath however due to the lengthy cooldown.
Speaking of, Steady Breath is a fantastic A slot choice. Steady Breath gives Joshua a Defense boost whenever attacked but more importantly, makes each action give two Special charge instead of one when attacked, allowing him to consistently activate Blue Flame or Aether. Joshua’s default A slot, Close Def, is also a solid option. While Joshua is fast, he’s not fast enough to always guarantee a follow-up attack, so Quick Riposte is extremely useful. Guard is also a strong choice, preventing the enemy from quickly charging their Special which helps against opponents with skills such as Bold Fighter. Renewal is a cheaper but still strong B slot which grants Joshua with some healing every other turn for good self sustainability. The C slot is completely open. A Wave Skill such as Even Def Wave will be a strong choice so Joshua can boost his own Defense, but if buffs can be provided, this is unnecessary. As he’ll likely always be close to teammates, skills such as Drives and Tactics are strong options. With the Audhulma, Joshua can also run Ploy skills.
Finally, Close Def makes for a solid Sacred Seal choice as to help increase Joshua’s defenses even further when attacked in close quarters. If Quick Riposte is not being used in the B slot, it also makes for a strong choice in the Sacred Seal slot.
Introduction
Joshua comes through and enters the FEH universe in quite possibly the most fitting way possible. It’s only natural that the Tempest King comes from the Tempest Trials after all. Joshua joins the fight as an infantry sword unit, coming in with a personal weapon and well balanced stats, making him a versatile unit in the way you want to build him.
With 41 HP, 31 Attack, 35 Speed, 30 Defense and 28 Resistance, Joshua has no single stat that can be considered ‘bad’ with his lowest stat of Resistance still being very respectable. Not only does he have these balanced stats, but he comes with a good personal weapon in the Audhulma which gives him a 16 might Killing Edge and even more Resistance. With these balanced stats, Joshua can be effective in a wide variety of roles and can make use of many different skills.
Unfortunately, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. While his stats are balanced and most of them are above average, he doesn’t have anything that particularly stands out as amazing. He’s doesn’t have the defensive capabilities of Zelgius and Black Knight or the offensive prowess of Ayra and Karla. He’s simply above average in all areas and that’s it.
That does not mean Joshua is bad though. He still has good stats across the board and he can certainly make use of them. He does face extremely heavy competition from many other sword units, both infantry and non-infantry, but Joshua can still be a good choice overall.
Strengths
Versatile stats
Joshua does not have any bad stats, with his worst stat being his Resistance at 28 which is still very good for an infantry sword unit. This well-balanced stat distribution leads to many different build options depending on what sort of playstyle you want Joshua to have.
Audhulma is a good personal weapon
The Audhulma, exclusive to Joshua, grants him with a 5 point boost to Resistance and an in-built Killing Edge effect, reducing his Special Cooldown by 1. The Resistance boost brings him to 33 Resistance which is very good, making him a potential user of Ploy skills. While Audhulma is good, switching it out for a regular Slaying Edge can be considered depending on the build as it provides freedom in which stat is buffed by Joshua's weapon.
Weaknesses
His versatility leads to no stand-out stats
While all of Joshua’s stats are solid overall, he doesn’t have any which stand out as amazing. However, when taking Audhulma into consideration, he has the 2nd highest Resistance of all sword units with only Caeda having more. This leads to him being outclassed in certain roles by more specialized units.
Tempest Trials unit
While he cannot be screwed over by IVs which is a blessing, it is a double-edged sword as Joshua will be unable to improve his most important stats through IVs. Also, while he can reach +10 thanks to Heroic Grails, it will likely take an extremely long time in order to obtain the amount of Heroic Grails necessary to get enough copies for a fully merged Joshua.
Team Options
Counters
Joshua struggles primarily with blue melee units, particularly ones with high defenses that can easily shrug off his attacks. Blue mages will also be able to hurt Joshua even with his high Resistance thanks to the weapon triangle advantage.
-
Bulky Blue fighters: Thanks to their Weapon Triangle advantage, any blue units with substantial Attack and Defense will take little damage from Joshua's attack while dealing lots of damage back. Units such as Nowi, Ephraim, Shiro, Effie, Winter Robin, and Hardin fit into this archetype.
-
Offensive Lance Fliers: Fliers such as Tana, Cordelia, and Shanna have excellent offensive spreads and will be able to utilize them in order to cut through Joshua's good defenses thanks to the Weapon Triangle advantage. All three commonly run the Firesweep Lance, meaning they can even attack without worrying about counterattacks.
- Blue Mages: Units such as Reinhardt, Linde, and Delthea are able to deal great damage to Joshua and are often capable of a ORKO against him, even if Joshua is equipped with skills like Distant Def.

He gets a boost in stats because he is summoner supported +5 HP and +2 to all other stats making him a level 40+5 essentially.
Distant Counter for mages because of his 35 res, as well as Glacies because of his res as well.
I gave him Res Ploy 3 to help in his damage output to mages but Atk Ploy 3 can be substituted to help with his Res.
Wrath 3 or Vantage 3 for the situation however Wrath 3 is used at least 70% of the time and Vantage for very specific moments.
I gave him a Close Def seal to help increase his Defenses to allow him to tank and bait physical threats better and if I get it to level 3 increasing it to 38/41 without buffs

My build is usefull for two ways : First, cover the distant characters, second, for kill heavy def characters you can't kill with distant cause of counter (like Hector or BK). He can't take a special from a blue hero, but can tank one normal attack from Hardin or Reinhart.
The C can be change with the team, but the best is an atk or spd buff.

For people with too much time.
Joshua can dosh out copious amounts of damage with Glacies in a single round of combat with the reduced cooldown, and the fact that he can tank mages too while doing so is just a plus.
You can substitute Fortress Res with Warding Stance if it ever comes out, or Close defence.

I absolutely loved Joshua in Sacred Stones. The second I saw him I fell in love with him (and Natasha) and used the hell outta him. When Heroes first came out, I was so disappointed to see that he wasn't there. So when TT rolled around and announced he was going to be there, I was ecstatic (almost in tears, actually)! What was even better were his stats -- a blessing in disguise, if you ask me.
This build is just an all around one that I use all the time. It has undergone some tweaks to fit my style of playing, so it's truly better for the enemy phase, as shown with the Close/Distant Def duo. Joshua is my best mage killer, and I swap out Close Def for Distant Counter whenever I need to (I'm not an armor emblem guy, sadly). My Joshua is primarily Enemy Phase, though can be used as Player Phase if needed. What truly gives him his power is Glacies and Audhulma -- with Audhulma giving him a +5 Res boost and -1 cooldown, Joshua reaches 33 Res, and once Glacies is triggered, he can do anywhere from 77 to 90 damage in one hit. With summoner support, he can reach up to 100 damage, actually! Joshua also almost always doubles any units, another perk of summoner support. Joshua really gets a lot of his power from summoner support, and as someone who loves him with all of his heart, it wasn't that hard of a choice. One more thing I'd like to mention -- he can actually tank most (MOST, not all) Reinhardts in Arena, who usually only deals 4-10 (8-20 w/dire thunder) damage to him. Typically, I keep Joshua on defense tile because it boosts his Res and Def, which makes him (nearly) unkillable to mages and any other units.
Overall, Joshua is an excellent unit if you put the time and effort into him. Though he does have difficulty with some lance users (specifically ones with Saphire Lance, or with high def [ahem, Lukas]), Joshua is able to tank many hits with this sort of build, summoner support or not.

Joshua, the best unit in the game, is even better with this not-too-expensive build. It serves a purpose of being able to somewhat resisting everything thrown at him (with the help of a healer). Fury is there to boost his already high BST higher, helping him reach 36 res, or 42 when attacked. This ties in with iceberg, dealing 21 damage, and with audhulma's slaying effect, it will be used every time it is attacked by a slower enemy. Sword breaker can be swapped out with desperation, but I would pick sword breaker over it to help out deal with fast sword units like ayra or mia. Threaten speed can be swapped out with threaten attack or some support thing (any works), but threaten speed helps with doubling.
