Boons
-
+RES: A boon in Resistance is coveted for Jagen, as it adds to his already impressive ability to tank magical hits while providing additional damage to Resistance scaling Specials such as Iceberg and Glacies.
-
+ATK: Attack makes for another good choice of boon as increasing Jagan's raw damage is always helpful.
Neutral
-
HP: Although carrying a refined weapon helps patch up any bane in HP, Jagen prefers to keep his neutral regardless in order to maintain as much magical bulk as possible.
Banes
-
-SPD: Speed is the best bane that Jagen can receive as it is too low to effectively utilize regardless of build. Furthermore, getting doubled allows Jagen to activate his Special more frequently.
- -DEF: Since Jagen’s primary goal is tanking magical hits, he can safely drop his already subpar Defense.

Sacred Seal: Distant Def / Quick Riposte / Atk Ploy / Def Ploy
This set aims to take advantage of Jagen’s sky-high Resistance by turning him into a strong magic duelist through the use of Distant Counter. Since this build is heavily centered around Enemy Phase combat, Attack and Resistance are the choice boons to take in order to maximize Jagen’s damage as well as his magical resilience. A Resistance-refined Slaying Lance makes for a great choice of weapon; not only does it grant Jagen additional boost to his magical bulk, it further increases his overall damage output by allowing him to activate his Special more frequently.
For his Special, Glacies is chosen for consistently high damage output by scaling off of Jagen’s exceptional Resistance. Furthermore, it also fits the timing of this set well thanks to the Special cooldown acceleration provided by Slaying Lance. Assuming that Jagen is doubled by his opponent, he will be able to activate his Special every single round of combat.
Moving on to main skills, Quick Riposte is absolutely essential for Jagen, as he is reliant on it to perform follow-up attacks in the Enemy Phase. Alternatively, one can move Quick Riposte to the Sacred Seal slot in favor of running Guard as his B skill. Guard will greatly reduce damage taken from opponents that rely on activating their Special such as Reinhardt and Ishtar. Another good choice is Dull Ranged, as it grants Jagen an immunity to his opponent’s Hone/Fortify buffs. This is especially useful in nullifying the damage received from Blade tomes.
Thanks to his top-notch Resistance, Jagen can also make effective use of Ploy skills. Atk Ploy further improves his ability to tank magical attacks by severely hindering the damage output of affected opponents while Def Ploy makes his own attacks more effective. When being run alongside other cavalry, Jagen may want to use a class-exclusive buff such as Hone Cavalry in order to be a benefactor for his team. Otherwise, the C slot can be replaced as needed to suit the team.
Last but not least, Jagen has several options for his Sacred Seal. Distant Def complements this Enemy Phase oriented playstyle, as it will reduce damage taken from all ranged opponents when initiated on as well as adding to damage of his Special. If not already being utilized in the B slot, the Quick Riposte seal is crucial in allowing Jagen to perform follow-up attacks in the Enemy Phase. The same applies to the aforementioned Ploy skills, which can also be run here if it is not already being used in the C slot.

Sacred Seal: Close Def / Quick Riposte / Atk Smoke / Resistance +3 / Attack +3
At the expense of being able to retaliate against ranged opponents, this build aims to stack as much Resistance as possible with the primary focus of combating dragons. By utilizing a Resistance-refined Berkut’s Lance, Jagen gets a massive +10 to his Resistance and +15 to his overall magical bulk. Once again, Specials that scale off Jagen’s absurdly high Resistance such as Iceberg and Glacies make for fantastic choices. Iceberg has consistency as it can potentially activate every single round of combat assuming Quick Riposte is active while Glacies trades a shorter cooldown for more raw power.
Since the core of this build is stacking Enemy Phase Resistance, Warding Stance is the choice A skill. With both this and Berkut’s Lance, Jagen will receive a staggering +16 Resistance and a total of 96 magical bulk when initiated on. Close Def also makes for a suitable option, as it is similar but instead grants +6 to Jagen’s overall bulk against melee opponents exclusively.
Quick Riposte is once again an integral part of Jagen’s set, as he is reliant on it in order to perform follow-up attacks in the Enemy Phase. Additionally, Guard also remains a strong option by preventing his opponents from activating their Special and further mitigating their overall damage output. Finally, Vantage pairs especially well with Iceberg, as Jagen will almost always have it ready to activate after his first round of combat assuming that he gets doubled. This gives him the potential to take out multiple opponents in a single Enemy Phase.
Atk Smoke and Def Smoke are a huge benefit to both Jagen and his teammates. By debuffing opponents around him after combat, any affected targets that will have either their damage and/or physical bulk reduced. As for Sacred Seals, an additional Close Def is a great choice in boosting Jagen’s survivability even further for the previous reasons. If not already being utilized in their respective slots, Quick Riposte and Atk Smoke also make for a suitable choice of Sacred Seal. Outside of that, Resistance +3 and Attack +3 both give Jagen a solid boost to his key stats.
Introduction
Old age has caught up with this knight. Being the origin of the archetype named after himself, Jagen carries the misfortune of having a lower BST than even the standard cavalier. Furthermore, his statline is distributed in a very polarizing way. With his Attack, Speed, Defense, and even HP all ranging from middling to abysmal, one would think that Jagen has absolutely nothing to offer. However, there is a saving grace in his disproportionally high Resistance.
At a base value of 35, Jagen Resistance allows him to stand out as an exceptional magic tank. By utilizing weapons such as Slaying Lance or Berkut’s Lance, Jagen can function as a respectable duelist against both mages and dragons alike. Although he is astronomically outclassed in this role by other units such as Mathilda and Peri, Jagen can play to his strengths in order to perform passably well on a team in need of a dedicated magic tank.
Strengths
Great Resistance
In addition to having fantastic damage soak against both mages and dragons, Jagen is able to make effective use of Ploy skills. This increases his effectiveness as both a support and as a standalone unit.
Cavalry
In addition to his superior mobility, Jagen has access to strong class-exclusive buffs such as Fortify Cavalry.
Weaknesses
Bad Attack
At a sub-par base value of 27, Jagen has a lot of trouble putting a dent into his opponents through just his raw Attack alone. This makes him highly reliant on activating his Special to do any significant damage.
Terrible Speed
What magical bulk Jagen may have is also offset by his atrocious 24 Speed. Getting doubled can greatly increase the amount of damage that Jagen takes as well as making enemy Specials easy to charge and activate. However, this can also play to Jagen’s favor by allowing him to activate his Special more frequently as well.
Poor Physical Bulk
Jagen’s low physical bulk of 62 causes him to get massively chunked, if not outright killed in one hit by physical opponents.
Cavalry
Although being a cavalry unit has its advantages, it can also be a detriment. On top of forests and trenches making it harder to navigate maps, Jagen has an innate weakness to cavalry effective weapons.
Team Options
Counters
Jagen is by no means a difficult unit to counter. Most strong physical units will easily do the trick due to his low physical bulk. Furthermore, opponents that are physically bulky can easily mitigate his naturally subpar damage output, especially if they are running Guard in order to prevent him from activating his Specials. Last but not least, Jagen’s status as a cavalry unit gives him an innate weakness to opponents carrying class-effective weapons.
-
Strong Physical Attackers: Powerful physical attackers such as Raven, Cordelia, Brave Lyn, and Minerva all make short work of Jagen’s lacking physical bulk
-
Physically Bulky: Hector, Sheena, Winter Chrom, and Brave Ike can easily mitigate the amount of damage that Jagen can do. In addition, units that utilize the skill guard can completely wall him off by preventing him from activating his Specials.
-
Effective Weapons: Anti-cavalry weapons, both physical and magic will easily tear through Jagen due to their damage multiplier. Common users include Rhajat, Micaiah, Gray, and Gerome.

Works well with a WoM dancer. Bowbreaker lets him take a hit from Lyn, take Lyn's life, then the dancer flies over and gives him a chance to either take on somebody else or ride off into the distance, lance dripping blood. Atk Ploy Seal helps with reducing damage to your team, Attack +3 Seal also works for extra damage. Needs glacies to kill most lancers, fighting axe units is out of the question.

With the meta seeming to settle down with fast paced ranged combat as the way to go, mages are vastly populating the Arena. As such, Jagen, the veteran knight of Altea, now has his chance to shine. This is a rather expensive build so it was really just more Theorycrafting on my part.
Jagen needs an Atk boon to do as much damage as possible and prefers a Spd bane as there is no salvaging that speed even with Hone Cav buffs. With that in mind, he'll be getting doubled by mages while sponging their hits and reaching his special much more quickly.
Unbuffed, Jagen reaches 45/21/25/39 if initiated upon thanks to Berkut's Lance. With such high Res, he makes excellent use of the Atk Ploy C skill, and in conjunction with an HP seal, it allows him to take more magic with ease and stay in QR range longer. If he is placed on a Horse Emblem team, he could potentially reach 45 Res with Fortify Cav, and 49 with Ward Cav, completely walling out a majority of mages whom he goes neutral or has WTA against.

Iceberg | C | Threaten Def 3 |
A +HP or Res is recommended to utilize Iceberg with his Resistance. This build makes Jagen a pure mage tank and offensive (partial) in Arena, though Units like Azura are prefered. A plus Res Jagen with cavalry buffs can have him reach insane stats however: Fortify Cal + Ward Cal + a Spd dump = 48 Res and a good Def of 35. With Hone and Goad Cal, Jagen gets an absurd attack of 51 and an ok speed of 31, high enough to tank Julia. With Water Boost and Sacred Seal of HP and a boon of such, Jagen can reach a Res of 50, enough to tank plus attack fury Nino/ Summer Elise. Threaten Def can have him finish tanky mages like TA Boey and F Robin. B or R Tomebreaker is suggested so that Mages with Lancebreaker can't double him. Any support that moves or heals is fine. Overall this build is really niche and should help Jagen take care of 90% of mages due to their awful HP and requires cavalry help. Panic Ploy can also work, But Jagen' awful HP won't help him much against TA and solo mages.
