Key stats worth increasing through nature if possible.

Assets

  • +ATK: With an extraordinary base value of 39, Hubert greatly appreciates an asset in Attack in order to further boost his damage.

  • +SPD: Speed also makes for a suitable choice of asset. Although Hubert’s base value of 32 isn’t particularly high, receiving an asset will bring him up to a solid 35 and make him more proficient in both performing and avoiding follow-up attacks.

Neutral

  • DEF: Despite its low base value, Hubert prefers to keep his Defense intact in order to better survive a single counterattack from non-blue physical opponents.

  • HP: Hubert’s HP is also best left neutral so as not to take away from his overall bulk.

Flaws

  • -RES: Although Resistance isn’t Hubert’s weakest stat, dropping it affect his overall performance the least.

Show Explanation/Analysis

Preferred IV: +ATK / -HP or -RES or -DEF

  • Another great use of the Blade tome and a particularly effective choice for Aether Raids is the Vantage sweeper setup. With it, an asset in Attack is preferable above all else in order to deal as much damage as possible in a single hit.

Weapon: Rauðrblade+

Assist: Reposition / Flexible

Special: Glimmer

  • The choice of Special is mostly inconsequential but Glimmer will remain the strongest option thanks to the damage scaling property of Blade tomes.

Passive A: Close Counter

Passive B: Vantage

  • The main focus of this set is running Close Counter with Vantage. Upon hitting the HP threshold for Vantage, any subsequent opponents that initiate on Hubert are forced to take at least one hit before having the chance to counterattack.

  • With this combination, Hubert can potentially take out multiple opponents in the Enemy Phase completely unscathed. However, the amount of support that Hubert needs in order to take out his opponent in only one hit can vary greatly depending on who he is left in the range of. Opponents with high magical bulk can be more difficult to face.

Passive C: Res Smoke / Savage Blow

  • Res Smoke is a fantastic choice of C skill with this playstyle. By reducing the magical bulk of opponents around Hubert after combat, any affected targets that initiated on him afterward will be hit even harder.

  • Savage Blow can make for a suitable alternative. Although it only works during the Player Phase, it can prove to be effective when initiating by dealing 7 damage to all enemies around the target after combat.

Sacred Seal: Brazen Atk/Def / Frierce Stance

  • For Hubert’s Sacred Seal, anything that boosts raw damage during the Enemy Phase such as Brazen Atk/Res or Fierce Stance makes for a great choice.

  • The most notable weakness of this build are opponents that prevent counterattacks or disable skills that change attack priority. As such, be wary of any Dazzling Staff healers, Firesweep users, or any unit equipped with the skill Hardy Breaking.

Show Explanation/Analysis

Preferred IV: +SPD or +ATK / -RES

  • Due to the nature of this set being offensive, Hubert appreciates an asset in key stats such as Attack and Speed.

Weapon: Rauðrblade+ / Rauðrfox+ (+Spd)

  • With their ability to scale damage based on the amount of field buffs a unit has, Blade tomes are the premier weapon for any offensive mage with Hubert being no exception.

  • In addition to the Blade tome, Hubert’s native Rauðrfox tome also makes for a strong offensive option by reducing the stats of his opponent in combat. While the potential damage with this weapon is lower, it does not require that Hubert receive field buffs in order to boost damage.

Assist: Reposition / Flexible

Special: Glimmer / Luna

  • Glimmer is a great choice of Special on any Blade tome user, as it scales with the additional damage received from Hone/Fortify buffs and activities within a reasonable timeframe despite the cooldown penalty tied to Blade tomes.

  • Luna makes for a suitable alternative when using Rauðrfox instead, particularly against opponents with high Resistance.

Passive A: Swift Sparrow / Atk/Spd Solo / Life and Death / Fury

  • At its maximum level, Swift Sparrow grants Hubert the overall strongest boost to his offensive stats with a whopping +6 Attack and +7 Speed on initiation.

  • Atk/Spd Solo also makes for a great choice of A skill by providing a significant boost to Hubert’s offensive stats when not adjacent to any allies.

  • Life and Death is another great option; while it does grant Hubert a strong offensive boost, it comes at the cost of severely damaging his overall bulk. This makes him even more susceptible to getting OHKO’d by physical and magical damage alike.

  • Finally, Fury makes for yet another solid alternative by making it easier to get into Desperation range as well as increasing his overall bulk at the cost of a marginally weaker offense.

Passive B: Desperation

  • Desperation is the cornerstone of any offensive glass cannon mage build. Once in the HP range, Hubert will be able to safely double his opponents without the risk of getting killed on the counterattack.

Passive C: Atk Wave / Flexible

  • Odd/Even Atk Wave is another great choice of C skill, as they grant Hubert as well as any adjacent allies an automatic +6 Spd buff at the start of every other turn.

  • The C slot can otherwise be replaced as needed to suit the team.

Sacred Seal: Heavy Blade / Darting Blow

  • Heavy Blade makes for a very effective Sacred Seal by allowing Hubert to consistently accelerate the cooldown of his Specials thanks to the damage scaling property of Blade tomes.

  • Darting Blow also makes for a very effective choice and suits the purely offense playstyle perfectly by granting Hubert a significant boost to his Speed on initiation.

Introduction

True to his status as a dark mage, Hubert is a very heavy hitter with an extraordinary base Attack of 39. This makes him stellar at utilizing builds that are based on defeating opponents in a single hit such as Close Counter/Vantage. However, Hubert doesn’t put all of his stock into Attack alone. Unlike other mages with a similar playstyle such as Lilina, Hubert also has the benefit of having a decent Speed stat, allowing him to take on more traditional offensive builds.

While Hubert’s Attack may be standout, his overall bulk is less than stellar. With only 60 physical bulk at base, Hubert is highly reliant on Desperation in order to avoid taking significant damage if not getting taken out in one hit by Distant Counter units.

Strengths

Exceptional Attack

With a base value of 39, Hubert hits incredibly hard with his raw Attack alone. This makes him the choice user of builds that are based around killing opponents in a single hit.

Decent Speed

Although not particularly high, Hubert’s base 32 Speed can easily be brought up through support to do well in performing and avoiding follow-up attacks.

Infantry

Hubert’s status as an infantry unit grants him access to powerful exclusive skills such as Null Follow-up and Special Spiral as well as allowing him to benefit from unique team support such as Infantry Pulse.

Weaknesses

Poor Physical Bulk

With only 60 physical bulk at base, Hubert is forced to take countermeasures in order to survive more than one round of combat against physical opponents that can retaliate.
