As a healer, Genny wants stat boosts which help her heal more and support the team with chip damage and debuffs. Attack is her best stat for a boon, with Resistance as a distant second. Genny’s Defense is poor, so reducing her physical defenses is acceptable for her.
Boons
-
+ATK: Attack is Genny’s bread and butter. A boon in Attack directly boosts Genny’s healing and damage output.
Neutral
-
RES: Genny has fairly good Resistance, but her low Speed means she can’t take magical hits well as she is prone to being doubled. More Resistance for Genny makes her better at using Ploy skills, which is a great secondary option for her if you don’t wish to use a Savage Blow build.
Banes
-
-HP: HP does not benefit Genny, so it can be safely reduced. Dazzling Staff allows her to Attack foes without fear of retaliation.
-
-DEF: Genny is unable to take hits from most physical damage dealers, so it can be reduced without much penalty. With Dazzling Staff, she does not fear retaliation from foes anyway. Lowering Genny’s Defense can also make her a target for Gunnthra’s Chilling Seal, which allows her to be used as a debuff scapegoat for her teammates.
- -SPD: At only 25 base Speed, Genny is unlikely to double anything and unlikely to be doubled in Player Phase due to the effects of Dazzling Staff. Changing her Speed will not affect her in any significant way.

Even amongst healers, Genny is cheap to build thanks to coming with Wrathful Staff naturally. This is her bread and butter build allowing her to provide both strong healing to allies and deal devastating AOE damage to foes.
Pain combined with Savage Blow and the Savage Blow seal mean that Genny can deal 10 extra damage to her target and a whopping 24 damage to enemies within two spaces. Since Genny already comes with Wrathful Staff, she opts for a Dazzling Refine in order to let her attack foes with impunity. Gravity+ is a very nice secondary option that allows Genny to kite foes with some team support from Reposition, Dance/Sing or Draw Back.
Genny does have the option of switching up her Assist skill, but Physic+ heals for 24 HP and is a great choice, as it allows the frail Genny to keep further away from frontline combat. Staff-users have many restrictions on their skills, so the humble Attack +3 is the best choice for Genny in order to boost her damage and healing.
If Genny is to be used strictly as a healer, or you want to use her without her weapon (such as with Autobattle) Ploy skills are attractive alternatives to Savage Blow. Based off Genny’s 34 Resistance, they are extremely likely to trigger during battles.

Sacred Seal: Savage Blow
Genny can make use of a gimmicky but deadly Vantage build in order to seal the fate of her enemies. The strategy when using this build is to have Genny attack, and make use of Close Counter and Vantage to finish off enemies before they can smack her back. A Dancer is highly recommended for use alongside this build, as it gives Genny a much better chance of reducing her foe’s HP to one.
Just like in her standard set, Pain and Savage Blow offer widespread destructive power, and with a Dance, she will be able to deal 48 flat damage in an area around her target. Close Counter and Vantage let Genny retaliate first and against melee foes. Wrathful Staff is not necessary, as she often only needs to deal one point of damage with Vantage activated.
Unlike the above build, Ploys are not an option as Genny needs to be dealing as much flat damage as she can. The vast majority of skills on this build are non-negotiable, but Miracle is a decent alternative to Imbue, potentially saving Genny’s life in some situations.
Introduction
Genny is a hero from Fire Emblem Gaiden/Shadows of Valentia. She is a staff-wielder famous for her high Attack and natural access to the Wrathful Staff skill. Genny excels at team support abilities thanks to her healing powers, and powerful typeless magic damage.
On the field, Genny has two primary roles: Heal allies with her staff, and deal heavy chip damage with skills such as Savage Blow. Genny has the highest Attack stat of all healers, which benefits both her healing and combat capabilities.
Genny has good Attack and Resistance, but is extremely frail and falls to nearly all physical attackers. She can safely attack foes herself, but strongly fears enemy damage. Due to her critically low Speed, even mages can KO Genny despite her strong Resistance.
Strengths
High Attack.
Genny’s primary strength is her huge Attack stat. Base 35 ties her with powerhouses such as Ike, Nowi and Bridal Cordelia. Although her low Speed means she can usually only hit once, she is capable of dealing large amounts of colorless magic damage to foes. Having more Attack also increases the raw healing she can provide through her staff.
Versatile in her role on the battlefield.
An advantage that Genny shares with other healers is her on-field versatility. Genny is a great all-purpose pick due to the fact she can provide both strong healing and damage to a team. She is useful inside and outside the Arena, and especially in longer modes such as the Tempest Trials or Chain Challenge.
One of the cheapest healers to build.
A key element of many healer builds is Wrathful Staff, which is skill that allows staff-users to strike at full damage (instead of the regular half damage). Since Genny comes with the skill naturally, she only needs a few easily obtainable skills to round out her build. Her natural weapon Gravity is also an exceptional choice for her.
Weaknesses
Extremely weak to damage, especially physical.
Genny has only 32 HP, 25 Speed, and 21 Defense. Such low stats render her helpless against even meek physical damage. She takes heavy damage from physical attacks and due to her low Speed she is certain to be hit twice. Her low Speed also makes her vulnerable to mages, many of which boast stellar Speed and can break through Genny’s Resistance with repeated hits or Specials.
Risks triggering threshold skills.
Genny specialises in heavy area of effect damage to weaken foes. While this is a very strong strategy, it can backfire if Genny’s foes have skills that trigger at reduced HP. Vantage, Wings of Mercy, Wrath, and Desperation are examples of skills that she can accidentally activate on foes. She also has to watch out for units such as Chrom(E) and Lyn who become much more threatening once they are damaged.
Team Options
Counters
Thanks to the effects of Dazzling Staff, Genny fears retaliation from nobody. What she does fear are foes who can attack her directly. Genny can be defeated by nearly anyone thanks to her low defensive stats and Speed. She must also be wary of enabling enemies to activate conditional skills which make them more formidable.
-
Ranged Cavalry: With their huge movement range, they can threaten Genny from across the map. Her high Resistance is not enough to save her from units such as Reinhardt, L’Arachel, Gunnthra and Brave Lyn.
-
Wrath, Vantage, Desperation users: These skills make their users a lot more deadly once activated. Nephenee, Valentine’s Hector, Nino, Raven and Hector are commonly seen with skills such as these. Genny risks activating these skills when she deals her typeless AOE damage.
- Wings of Mercy: Another HP threshold skill, but it is commonly seen on different types of units. Wings of Mercy is commonly seen on dancers, and Genny must be more careful about checking their skills when she launches attacks.

Genny gains +4 instead of +3 when having a boon or bane on her speed stat. A +Spd Genny can become very speedy when built right.
With Speed +6 skill and Seal she reaches 35 speed on her own. With a Hone Spd she reaches 39. Add summoner support and Ally Support and she will reach 43. If you have someone with Drive Spd, add that as well for giggles and she reaches 46 Spd. She can even serve as a magical wall in case of desperate measures, since she most likely won't get doubled and her Res is pretty high. One can run a Ploy skill on her if wanted.
Her high attack combined with the fact that only Raven tomes can stop her means that she will outright kill most units that she doubles, with obvious exceptions; units that have really high Res. She does amazingly well against Armor Emblem, especially if said armor unit doesn't have Wary Fighter. But even so, she can still bully anything she wants because of Dazzling effect!

This set capitalizes on Genny's MinMaxed Atk and Res so she can tank some popular arena mages. A res boon and Distant Def 3 places her at 43 res, allowing her to survive a +3 +Atk Reinhardt with a typical Death Blow 3/Quickened Pulse/Moonbow with a hone cavalry buff, assuming she activates Atk Ploy 3.
+Res is required for this build to work, but +Atk is also good, as you could run Res+ 3 and get the same statline. Her Def and HP are garbage, so don't worry about dropping them.
The Wrathful Gravity+ with Quick Riposte is where this build shines. With the above Reinhardt, she will be able to kill him on the follow-up, unless he has received any cavalry defensive buffs, in which case she can kill him on her turn. Arena Reinhardts rarely run vantage, as Lancebreaker is a better option, so it shouldn't matter.
Gravity+ allows her to counter cavalry's movement, plus it has the added benefit of being her cheapest option
The other skills are recommended, but they don't make or break the build. Atk+ 3 is her best A skill, as it increases attack and is inheritable by staff users. With the staff upgrades, it also increases her healing. Res+ 3 is also a viable option if you're willing to trade offence for defense.
Recover+ and Physic+ both heal the most, based on her attack, so these are best. Physic+ does heal less, but it's cheaper.

Genny is a healer with an abnormally high attack. So, let's use that to our advantage.
Her boon should be +Atk, and her bane should be -Res or -Def. Take into account that healers naturally have low Def., so it's fine if her bane is -Def. She could be -Res. (that's what mine happens to be), but it doesn't really matter because it will balance out with defense. Okay, onto the skills and what they do.
Passive A - Attack +3
We use Attack +3 to higher Genny's already high attack, so that she can do more damage. You can also bend this for a Defense +3 or a Resistance +3 if attack is something you don't want to invest in.
Passive B - Wrathful Staff 3
This skill is Genny-Only, so you shouldn't work about this. Wrathful Staff calculates damages from staffs as normal weapons. The prequels of Wrathful Staff only activate when the unit's HP gets low enough. So be sure to get the prequels when you can for this skill.
Passive C - Breath of Life 3
This is started for me as more of an experimental skill, but proved to be of worth in the end. Genny is ideal for final blows, or an Attack-Dance/Sing-Attack routine, so with some units nearby (which is needed, she's a healer, low Def.), she can heal them up in a jiffy whether she's attacking or healing.
Seal - HP +3
I put it there to give her some extra HP, since she is expected to survive on battlefield as a healer.
Weapon - Assault
Assault is probably one of the best weapons for healers. It has a good Might stat, and coupled with Genny's high attack leads to a mass amount of damage.
Support Skill - Mend
I thought putting Mend on Genny would be a good idea, because it heals more health, but you could also slap Physic on her if you want her to be a ranged healer.
Special - Heavenly Light
Default special at 5*, also very good special.
