Attack, Attack, Attack. Every part of Frederick’s builds revolves around maximising his raw damage output. It’s far superior to any other boon. Frederick really does not mind reducing any of his other stats, but would prefer to keep HP and Defense intact if possible.
Boons
-
+ATK: Attack is required to maximize Frederick’s damage and grant OHKO’s on Brave Lucina, Fjorm, Elincia, and Arden.
Neutral
-
HP: Not necessary for Frederick, but he can act as a tank in some situations and reducing this lowers his physical defense.
-
DEF: Much in the same boat as HP, but this stat is more desirable in the rare case that Frederick wants to run Bonfire.
Banes
-
-SPD: Completely unnecessary for Frederick who aims to one-shot foes.
- -RES: With only 17 resistance and such low speed, Frederick can afford to abandon his resistance.

Frederick’s strongest set is very one-dimensional, aiming to maximize his already great Attack in order to OHKO as many foes as possible. With a Slaying Axe he can trigger a special on his very first attack, giving him incredible power and allowing him to shortcut some defensive effects such as Brave Ike’s Urvan.
Death Blow, an Attack boon, and an Attack refine onto his Slaying Axe give Frederick the power to cut through foes. His damage is further enhanced by running Quickened Pulse and Glimmer. With this combination, he can trigger Glimmer on the first hit. With this build, Frederick has 60 raw Attack factoring Death Blow, so Glimmer will deal extraordinary damage. Bonfire is also usable if you’re going for a Hammer build or don’t need the turn one Special.
Frederick’s Assist skill options are fairly typical. Reposition lets him pull offensive allies out of danger and Swap is more of a defensive option that also gives him a small movement boost. Frederick has 48 HP with this build, making him a great user of Panic Ploy.

For those without the resources to build a Frederick in his optimal build, he is an excellent Armor killer due to naturally learned Hammer+. This set is largely the same as the above, but does not trigger Glimmer on turn one and runs a Slaying Hammer to punish Armor teams.
Death Blow, Attack +3, an Attack boon, and an Attack refine give Fredrick base 63 Attack factoring in Death Blow. This is enough to OHKO even many non-armor units in the game, with low-defense mages being susceptible to OHKO’s. Glimmer is still run, allowing him to OHKO Zelgius, Fae and the Black Knight when it is charged.
Axebreaker is taken to ensure that he can double units such as Brave Ike, Dorcas, and Minerva who would otherwise beat him. Frederick has 48 HP with this build, making him a great user of Panic Ploy.
Introduction
Frederick is from Fire Emblem Awakening and is a green axe-wielding Cavalry. Cavalry teams are a dominant force in the game but despite this, Frederick has always had a hard time fitting in to their team structure. He does not have good synergy with existing members making him harder to use than others such as Sigurd and Cecilia.
With the release of refines however, Frederick has seen a new lease on life. Now he can function effectively as an anti-armor or a general-purpose offensive unit. And with new measures to counter cavalry teams, Frederick finds his lack of reliance a newfound strength.
This makes Frederick an excellent offensive unit for mixed teams. His ability to destroy armor makes him useful in Arena Assault and despite having weaknesses in his Speed and Resistance. Frederick is an undervalued, but great unit to invest in.
Strengths
Sky high attack and excellent mobility.
Frederick’s whole character is defined by his excellent base 35 Attack. He reaches 38 with an Attack boon, allowing him to OHKO many foes. Frederick combines this with bonus mobility from being a cavalry. This allows him to reach further with his attacks and be a more threatening force on the field.
Not reliant on buffs unlike other Cavalry.
Most Cavalry run in teams in order to share strong buffs with each other. However, Frederick operates best as a lone wolf in combination with other teammates. His attack is high enough to KO many foes outright and he gains little from Hone Cavalry.
Weaknesses
Very poor Speed.
Base 25 Speed is low for an offensive unit, and it affects Frederick in many ways. Despite his great 36 base Defense, Frederick is not hard to KO as many foes can double him. It also means that in order to beat certain units, he must run Axebreaker to ensure he can hit twice against them.
Critically low Resistance.
Frederick’s other weakness is having low Resistance. This does not affect his offensive capabilities much, but means he is very susceptible to magic damage. Even blue mages or staff-users with Wrathful Staff pose a serious threat to him.
Team Options
Counters
Mages of all colors spell doom for Frederick due to his low Speed and Resistance. However, it’s important to note that Frederick can KO many of them given the opportunity to close in. This also rings true for Staff-users. He must beware of cavalry mages who can out-range and KO him.
-
Mages: Sources of magic damage are big threats to Frederick, particularly mounted mages such as Reinhardt, (SM) Eirika, and Cecilia who can out-range Frederick.
-
Staff-users: Not only can they heal off Frederick’s damage, with Wrathful Staff they only need 30 Speed to double Frederick. Elise, Priscilla, and Clarine are all mounted and when buffed, have the stats to decimate him. He must also watch for common wielders of Gravity such as Genny who cannot double him, but deal critical damage and restrict his escape.
- Dragons: Adult Tiki and Young Tiki are two of Frederick’s greatest counters. He cannot risk engaging them under any circumstances. Fae and Myrrh are also big threats, as Frederick cannot double or OHKO them.

Maximum Power
With this build your making use of a +spd nature. **If you have another boon you can use that too, you only need to replace desperation with vantage/renewal.** If Slaying Axe+ is a too expensive choice, you could also use Hammer+ because it has the same might, the only difference is that SA+ gives you a cooldowncount +1 and Hammer+ is effective against armored units. If you really don't want to run Fury, you can replace it by atk/spd +2 or spd +3 or darting blow or swift sparrow.
This set allows Frederick to be a super-offensive unit, but also to be enormously tanky against physical attacks. Slaying Axe+(spd) is preferred to boost the high attack of frederick with its 14 mt. but also to give frederick more spd so he doesn't get doubled by most units and can double a lot himself without the help of a Brave Axe+, so his attack and spd doesn't get decreased. For the A slot Frederick prefers Fury 3, because of his big HP-pool and so he can get quicker in the desperation/vantage range ánd to boost his spd and attack to even higher levels. For the B slot you can choose desperation if you have a spd boon or darting blow in your a slot, but with another boon vantage or renewal suits him better. His C slot is quite flexible; you can run threaten spd for more doubles, fortify/hone cavalry for your horse emblem-team or something else that fits your team the most.

Frederick stats lines allows him to be a good damage dealer or physical wall given the proper equipment , this build is focus on boosting his defense without sacrificing his offensive presence on both enemy and player face.
Fury improves his overall performance ,´ is a cant go wrong´ as long you kept in mind that he will need consistent healing for quick riposte sake`s.
Quick riposte make wonders letting go nuke against the blues and greens and even some physical reds on enemy phase, if they are fast enough to double, then the it will go as follow:
Enemy attacks>Frederick responses>Enemy again>Frederick activates Luna
With Close defense as the S skill ,his already decent defense almost hits the 50 without any sort of buffs, meaning he wont go down easily and will most likely take down physical blues and greens going his way; if the enemy cant double, then you have Luna charged up for the next turn.
Slaying hammer is meant to increase Frederick coverage while keeping a good source of damage regardless of who initiates the battle , slaying axe is a good option too but it might affect the tempo of his special activation, since Luna will be ready to use on 2 turns it means that on quick riposte retaliation he may overkill the enemy and reset the charge without taking much advance of it, this can be fixed by piking a 4 turns charges special ,since it will go down on 3 thanks to the weapon properties , but keep in might that a Hammerderick with Luna is an Armour worst nightmare since they good defense gets cuts off by a half and will have to take on his over 50`s attack.
C spot is flexible , Frederick does well both in and out of Calvary teams, horse emblem skills are preferred only if he has at less one partner so they can buff each other, in case you wont use other Calvary in the squad, a few advises:
-His hp, while decent, is not high enough for a consistent use of panic ploy
-The Threats skills decently , no greatly, why? Frederick non-existent resistance and below average speed means he need to be careful baiting more than he can chew into his range, also remember that this skills work only on 2 spaces, so either you use on archers or physical enemies that, unless they are red, are gonna be really damage after the battle;over killing it when you can act again. No, don't even think of baiting mages.
-because of the above, smoke skills are better since they let you decrease the stats of distant foes without having to engage them directly , but its not very available and wont change Frederick performance vastly.

The most destructive duelist I've built for Horse Emblem, Frederick shatters any green and blue unit unlucky enough to have low Def or HP with a combined Brave Axe+ and Fire Boost. While the usual consensus is for Death Blow to be taken over Fire Boost, the latter allows Frederick to be a relevant threat during the enemy phase as well as the player phase- especially when paired with a strong Recover+ healer.
Drag Back is taken to preserve his HP after finishing combat so that the enemy team cannot rush in to take him out, alluding to guerrilla tactics and keeping the Polite Knight safer from harm. The HP+5 Sacred Seal allows Fire Boost to activate more often, especially in the current meta.

4* +3. Defensive build to suit my personal IVs. Atk and Spd are also good banes, preferably at 5* for the latter due to a +4 boon. If working with an Atk/Spd boon Frederick, a different strategy can be employed (see below).
With Atk boon, Brave Axe +, Death Blow, and Drag Back become much more viable options. Similar build and playstyle to Cherche.
With Spd boon, Renewal can be used to add to his overall longevity, and his weapon and special would be most effective as Hammer+ and Bonfire, respectively. This would allow him to naturally double his foes (under the normal conditions of Cavalry buffs) while at the same time gaining effectiveness against armoured units and a periodic heal.

Luna | C | Fortify Cavalry |
A fairly typical Brave Axe build for the best axe cavalry. Attack +3 is used over Death Blow in part because of availability and cost, but also because Frederick is capable of taking a melee hit easily and Death Blow wouldn't aid in that scenario. Fury is only partially effective, so to speak, since his Speed and Resistance are so low that +3 would be irrelevant.
