Key stats worth increasing through nature if possible.

Frederick's best stat to invest in is attack. His base attack is fantastic, and a boon will help all of his builds tremendously.

His weakest stat is resistance, as even with a boon it doesn't make him durable against mages at all. It is the best stat to get a bane. A speed bane is also decent for Brave builds, as his speed will be low with this build regardless.

Frederick is one of the best Brave Axe users in the game thanks to his attack and mobility. With this set up, he reaches a whopping 53 attack on initiation before any buffs, and with his 3 movements, he can pick the fights he wants easily.

Reposition and Draw Back have terrific synergy with cavalry units, allowing them to protect allies from a long distance.

Bonfire is his best special, thanks to his enormous 35 defense base, and it is also easy to charge thanks to Brave Axe. Ignis can be used as an alternative, as with Ignis charged he can one shot Hector with no problem.

Death Blow is the best A slot for any Brave Axe users with low speed like him, Life and Death can be used if Death Blow 3 is not available as it is still a five attack increase, but it will lower his base defense a lot and in generally not as optimal.

Drag Back / Hit and Run are pivotal for him to stay safe, as he is very vulnerable to mages and dragons. With three movement and Drag Back, he can stay safe even without allies' help, making him a strong spearhead for your team. Drag Back is generally preferred over Hit and Run, as even if Frederick cannot kill the target, his allies can finish them off easier with Drag Back.

The last skill slot depends on your team composition. Any cavalry buffs, particularly Goad / Hone / Fortify cavalry will go well with cavalry teams (Frederick has an easy access to Fortify Cavalry thanks to his innate Fortify Def). A Threaten Defense is also not a bad idea, providing more firepower to Frederick, while Hone/Spur skills are also a decent choice to help out teammates.

  • Weapon: Slaying Axe / Hammer / Emerald Axe / Melon Crusher
  • Support: Reposition / Draw Back
  • Special: Ignis / Bonfire

  • Slot B: Quick Riposte
  • Slot C: Varies on team
  • Boon/bane: +Atk -resistance
  • Sacred Seals: Atk +1

Frederick makes a terrific physical tank, thanks to his defense and HP. With this setup, he reaches 39 defense unbuffed in any team, and has the potential to reach 49 defense in combat with cavalry buffs.

Slaying Axe and Ignis have strong synergy, allowing him to use Ignis the same turn he is attacked by a faster units like Raven or Anna.

Bonfire is preferred over Ignis if you run a speed boon set Frederick instead, as he reaches 32 speed and can prevent a double attack from Fury Ike. Bonfire is also better with other weapons like Hammer or Emerald Axe.

Hammer is a good alternative to give him more power against Effie, Hector, Sheena or Zephiel. With an a attack boon he can one round Zephiel attacking him thanks to Quick Riposte, while Effie, Sheena and Hector will always lose duels to him. It is a valid option if your team lacks a way to deal with armored units.

Emerald Axe is most of the time overkill, but it actually allows Frederick to survive Death Blow 3 +Atk Reinhardt thanks to his enormous HP pool, even with a -resistance bane. So if your team is weak against Reinhardt, then Emerald Axe is a solid option.

Fury 3 is better for the general stat boost that he sorely needs, but Earth Boost is also not bad, since Frederick has 43 base HP meaning with Seal or +HP boon he is almost guaranteed a 6 defense boost against units attacking in.

Quick Riposte is a must for this build, as it circumvents his poor speed and allows him to retaliate twice.

Introduction

Frederick is a green cavalry unit with high attack, defense and HP. He is most comparable to Cherche in that they have a similar stat spread, and thus can run the same builds. While Cherche has the advantage in attack, meaning she can run Brave Axe build with more firepower, Frederick has better mobility and defense, allowing him to be a dominant force in both cavalry and normal teams.

Frederick's main drawbacks are his poor resistance and speed, meaning he is not meant to take on magical attacks the majority of the time. Nonetheless, Frederick is incredibly effective in the right team, and is a great choice for any player looking for a good physical axe user.

Strengths

High attack:

  • Frederick has 35 base attack, only lower than Cherche, Hector and Bartre amongst Axe users.
  • This allows him be strong offensively and is a great user of Brave Axe.

Strong physical bulk

  • 36 defense and 43 HP base are terrific for a physical tank, allowing him to even take hits from red sword units that do not double him.

High mobility

  • As a cavalry unit, Frederick has fantastic reach, letting him attack, support and retreat faster and safer.
  • It also gives him access to potent cavalry buffs in cavalry teams.
Weaknesses

Poor speed:

  • His speed makes him vulnerable to fast units like Ryoma or Lucina, despite his high defense.
  • It also means he very rarely doubles anyone if at all.

Poor resistance:

  • He fares terribly against almost all mages and dragons, due to his 14 base resistance
  • Frederick should avoid taking magic damage, even from blue mages like Linde or Reinhardt.
Team Options
  • As a cavalry unit, fellow knights who can supplement him with cavalry buffs are great teammates, particularly blue cavalries like Reinhardt, Olwen, Ursula, Peri, Abel or Camus, as they also cover red units for him.
  • In normal teams, dancers like Azura, Olivia or Ninian are very effective supports, as they bolster his mobility to ridiculous levels, and gives him exceptional reach as well as sweeping potential.
  • Units that can generally tank magic attack, especially from red or green colors are good teammates, since Frederick cannot take magic attacks at all. Sanaki, Mae, Linde, Lilina and Sophia are some good examples.
Counters
  • Fast red swords unit like Ryoma, Lucina, Hana, Lloyd, Karel or Lyn can double him easily, effectively dispatching him even with his high defense
  • Tanky reds like Zephiel, Eldigan, Xander or Ike can tank his attack easily, and kill him on retaliation with skills like Quick Riposte.
  • Mages and Dragons are his biggest counters, particularly red mages/dragons like Tiki, Celica, Tharja, Leo, Sophia, Sanaki and Lilina.
  • Even green mages like Nino, Soren, Cecilia or Spring Camilla can blow through his HP fairly easily, due their strong offensive power.
  • Any mages carrying Wolf tomes will spell doom to him as well, due to him being a mounted unit.
