An offensive set that aims to take the fullest advantage of Ethlyn's decent offenses and huge attack range as a ranged cavalry unit whilst still maintaining her ability to heal and set up kills for others. The focal point of this set is the powerful combo of Dazzling Staff and Wrathful Staff, both removing the damage penalty from staves and completely preventing her from being counterattacked. This allows her to attack freely on even the most dangerous of enemies such as mixed phase dragons and armored units that would otherwise laugh her off and who can often be difficult to approach on either phase. The choice of running Dazzling on her weapon and Wrathful on her B skill is entirely arbitrary, and can be swapped as necessary based on what one has available. 

The choice for Ethlyn's weapon is largely a matter of preference. Pain combos extremely well when running both the Savage Blow C skill and Sacred Seal, dealing absolutely huge amount of splash damage among enemy teams, notably without advancing their Special charge at all. This can make normally frightening Enemy Phase opponents cakewalk for her or the rest of her team, especially after knocking her opponents out of the HP range of skills such as Quick Riposte, Vengeful Fighter, or Special Fighter—just be mindful of opposing Wings of Mercy. The other primary option for her weapon is Gravity. Though it deals less immediate damage, it has the potential to completely halt entire teams, and if given support from an ally through a skill such as Dance or Draw Back, she can do this ad nauseum at almost no risk, perpetually keeping safe out of enemy range. 

For her A skill, Atk/Spd Push is the clear strongest offensive option available for healers who are otherwise restricted from using the normal set of popular offensive A skills such as Fury or Swift Sparrow. Though the skill grants a slight recoil and requires her to be at 100% HP, if she wishes to make use of it multiple times she can easily circumvent its limitation through the use of Martyr or the Live to Serve Sacred Seal. Bond skills such as Atk/Spd Bond or her native Spd/Def Bond are workable alternatives that don't require her to use a sustain, though be warned that they may put large burdens on her normally very flexible positioning.

Savage Blow is a great option for both Ethlyn's C slot and Sacred Seal, allowing her to dish out huge amounts of splash damage; paired with Fear the amount of indirect damage becomes massive, while paired with Gravity she remains fairly safe from enemies packing skills such as Wrath or Desperation. If one instead desires more support, her C slot can be replaced with a supportive skill such as Hone Cavalry, while her Sacred Seal can be replaced with a skill such as Live to Serve or a stat boost such as Attack +3 which improves both her damage and healing output.

A set focused around her support capabilities and setting up kills for allies. Here Ethlyn makes great use of the Gravity staff, abusing her huge range to lock down foes, making them easier for her allies to deal with. Her base Fear staff is a perfectly strong option however, especially when run aside tanky allies. Aiming to support, the Dazzling refine should be prioritized as it allows her to apply her chosen debuff more safely. 

Ethlyn's choice of Heal is almost entirely up to preference, Recover likely the most all-round flexible option, though with others such as Physic and Rehabilitate offering unique niches of their own. Heavenly Light is a great Special option, allowing her to heal her entire team at once. Alternatively Imbue grants her a burst heal for just her target at a quicker cooldown.

A stat bonus is all Ethlyn really desires for her A slot, with Attack +3 a fairly accessible option that boosts her healing output (and perhaps occasional damage). Her Spd/Def Bond instead can be used as a means to help her take hits and keep herself safe from getting picked off.

Wings of Mercy is the go-to B slot for many support units for a good reason and it allows Ethlyn to teleport to any allies at low health, ensuring she will be able to reach her allies when needed. Avoid pairing Wings of Mercy with Physic however, as it will leave her unable to heal any ally sh teleports beside. Live to Serve instead allows Ethlyn to keep herself healthy as she heals others, and the sustain also much better enables her to make use of her decent Defense by acting as a tank when needed.

Hone Cavalry is a great C slot option that lets her provide a huge offensive boost to any cavalry allies, though can of course be changed up for other skills such as Drive skills based on the desires of her teammates.

Live to Serve is a strong Sacred Seal option if she is not already utilizing it as her B slot, though if it is then generic buffs such as Drive Atk work great for support in the same vein as her C skill.

A fairly low-investment set that aims to make the most of Ethlyn's base skillset and her surprising bulk. Fear is a great weapon for a tank set, lowering the Attack of her target and any enemies within two spaces by 7 after she makes an attack. In a sense this is effectively similar to boosting the Defense and Resistance of her and her teammates by 7. This gives Ethlyn an effective 39 Speed and 38 Defense on Enemy Phase when boosted by Spd/Def Bond, which can make her rather hard to take down.

Physic works fine as her default healing option, though Recover can be chosen for slightly higher healing at the cost of range. As well, Martyr can be chosen to grant her even greater self-sustain, especially when paired with Live to Serve as her B slot.

Miracle enables her to survive one potentially fatal hit, and may be a literal lifesaver after sponging multiple enemy hits. Ethlyn can then follow this by healing herself back up with Live to Serve, starting the process all over again. 

Drive skills remain powerful options for her both her C slot and Sacred Seals, allowing her to passively buff up her nearby allies. Stat buffs for herself such as from an Atk/Def Sacred Seal also provides for a great boost.

Introduction

The adorable wife of Quan and sister to Sigurd, Ethlyn is a cavalry staff unit first made available through the Doorway to Destiny Tempest Trial. As a ranged cavalry unit, she sports fantastic mobility and has access to strong class buffs such as Hone Cavalry. With a fairly high 34 Speed though middling 28 Attack, Ethlyn makes immediate parallels to other similar cavalry healer such as Nanna and Clarine. While, like them, she is perhaps slightly less powerful than recent offensive cavalry healers such as Maribelle and Brave Veronica, her strengths granted by her class are not at all any weaker for it and should certainly not be overlooked. Weapon refinement grants Ethlyn access to the "Wrazzle Dazzle" (Wrathful Staff + Dazzling Staff) combination, essentially making her a colorless cavalry mage who cannot be counterattacked. Combine that with the effect offered staves such as Gravity and Pain and it is easy to see how she can absolutely able to demolish certain teams. 

Ethlyn does have to face some harsh truths however. Lack of access to IVs does somewhat hurt her potential compared to other healers, especially her inability to utilize an Attack boon. Additionally, while her Arena scoring potential is rather poor like most healers, Ethlyns scoring is exceptionally so, owed to the fact that she is at time of writing limited to just one merge. In fact, thanks to this, she is truthfully the lowest-scoring unit in the entire game. Of course, this is only a flaw in Arena, and not even relevant to all players.

These drawbacks far from ruin her potential however, and she is still able to make a name for herself even among similar healers. She also features an additional standout quality through her base kit and stat line: At 26, Ethlyn's Defense is the highest among cavalry healers and through her base Fear+ weapon and Spd/Def Bond skill this can be pushed even further making her quite deceptively tanky, especially when healing herself through Live to Serve. As the first "guaranteed 5-star" Healer in the game, Ethlyn will certainly make for a very useful F2P unit versus PvE content, particularly for players who did not choose Brave Veronica as their free CYL2 summon.

Strengths

Wrathful / Dazzling

As a healer, Ethlyn holds access to the skills Wrathful Staff and Dazzling Staff. This powerful combination essentially grants her the ability to act as a ranged Firesweep user. Best of all that isn't even the primary effect of her weapon, which adds yet another powerful effect of choice on top of that.

Amazing range

With three movement and two attack range, Ethlyn has a total five range to initiate attacks which grants extraordinarily flexibility in her positioning and ability to reach her opponents. This is fantastic for a staff unit as it makes safely and reliably applying the many unique debuffs offered by staves all the more easier.

Weaknesses

Limited skill options

As a healer, Ethlyn finds herself restricted from using a massive set of skills in-game. Not only are bread and butter offensive skills such as Fury, Life & Death, and Swift Sparrow off the table, but also damaging Specials such as Moonbow or Bonfire.

Awful Arena scoring potential

As a cavalry healer obtained via Tempest Trial and limited to just on merge, at time of writing Ethlyn has the absolutely lowest scoring potential of any unit in the game. Even with premium high scoring skills such as Close Counter, she still scores even below the unmergeable Askrian trio of Anna, Alfonse, and Sharena. While she will likely be more than serviceable in lower tiers, Ethlyn will likely prove a subpar option for players who wish to break into or above Tier 20, or even Tier 19 if the player lacks a high-scoring Arena core.

Effective damage

As a Cavalry, Ethlyn has to be forever wary of weapons such as Ridersbane, Wolf tomes, or unique weapons such as Caeda's Wing Sword and Micaiah's Thani. Some of these may easily be able to pierce through her defenses in just a single blow.

Team Options

  • Refreshers: Though the combination of Wrathful and Dazzling staff combined with the effect of her staff can be alarmingly powerful, Ethlyn can still be somewhat vulnerable on Enemy Phase. Units with skills like Sing and Dance such as Ninian, Performing Azura, and Hoshidan Summer Micaiah enable Ethlyn to either attack again or reposition herself to safety, and is exceptionally powerful when Ethlyn is using the Pain or Gravity staves.

  • Cavaly: One of Ethlyn's greatest assets is her ability to utilize skills such as Hone Cavalry massively boosting her offensive potential. Strong Cavalry units such as Reinhardt, World of Thracia Olwen, and Ares are all examples of powerful cavalry units that can be used aside her and are also great at keeping up with Ethlyn's high mobility.

  • Tanks: Healing naturally synergizes best with units that aim to regularly sponge damage such as Brave Hector, Xander, or Myrrh.

Counters

  • Effective weapons: Heroes that utilize weapons that do bonus damage to cavalry can easily pierce through her otherwise above-average bulk. Common users of such weapons include Caeda, Gerome, and Gray as well as both Micaiah and Hoshidan Summer Micaiah on the magical side.

  • Magical tanks: Though not perfect counters they will still be heavily impacted by the power of Ethlyn' staff, high Resistance units like Deirdre, Felicia, Winter Tharja, and Fjorm will be slightly less susceptible to Ethlyn's antics as they won't be nearly as injured by her natural damage output.
