Boons
-
+ATK: Chrom’s best boon is by far his enormous Attack stat. Given his slow Speed, he greatly appreciates the power increase per attack. This also makes him one of the best users of the brave sword in the game.
-
+HP: Chrom’s HP is the highest among the Falchion users, thus making him the most effective for a pseudo-healer set. A HP boon is recommended for this set.
-
+DEF: Chrom has a great Defense stat of 31 which when combined with his great HP gives him a lot of physical bulk. A Defense boon works well for a more defensive set.
Banes
-
-SPD: Chrom’s most disposable stat is his Speed. At 25 Speed neutral, Chrom is very slow and susceptible to double attacks, even with his Speed boon boosting him with 4 point, so Speed is the ideal bane of choice.
- -RES: A Resistance bane is also acceptable as Chrom’s Resistance is extremely poor to begin with, so cutting his Resistance will not dampen him too much.

This build focuses on utilizing Chrom’s defensive capabilities for melee tanking.
An Attack or Defense boon with a Speed bane works best for this setup. The Attack boon is for if you want more damage from Chrom’s Attack and the Defense boon is for if you want Chrom to have better physical bulk. The Refined Falchion gives Chrom Renewal 3 as well as +4 to all stats except HP when adjacent to an ally, helping him with his all-round combat capabilities. The assist is mostly up to player preference. A movement assist such as Reposition or Swap works very well. You also have a variety of Special options. If Chrom is running Steady Breath, Aether is hands down the way to go, granting Chrom both increased offensive power and self-healing all in one. If Chrom is not using Steady Breath, one can alternatively capitalize on the fact Chrom will likely be adjacent to allies for his refined Falchion and use Blue Flame, or you could use Sol for self-healing. Both Blue Flame and Sol also work well with Steady Breath, but given Aether's power and the fact Chrom comes with Aether naturally, there's little reason to not run Aether with Steady Breath.
Speaking of, Steady Breath is Chrom's optimal A slot. Not only does it grant Chrom with a Defense boost on enemy phase, but it also grants two charge cooldown instead of one per action. This allows Chrom to charge high cooldown specials such as Aether incredibly quickly, potentially even every single round of combat depending on if Chrom gets double attacked. Atk/Def Bond is a strong alternative that offers great synergy with his refined Falchion which’ll result in him getting a huge nine point boost to Attack and Defense and four points of Speed and Resistance when adjacent to an ally. Steady Stance is another option and great for boosting Chrom's tankiness. While Steady Stance does not provide the increased cooldown of Steady Breath, it still provides a solid boost to Defense when attacked.
For B slot, there is a good variety of options. The recommendation is Quick Riposte, allowing Chrom to perform a guaranteed follow-up whenever he is attacked and begins combat above the HP requirement, allowing him to tank hits then deal two hard-hitting attacks in return. Other options include Guard which will help Chrom to resist users of skills such as Bold Fighter and Special Fighter and Renewal which’ll help Chrom with his sustainability and help to keep him healthy.
Thanks to his high HP, Chrom can make great use of Panic Ploy, allowing him to reverse the buffs of this opponents. Even Def Wave also makes for a solid option, allowing Chrom to boost himself and adjacent allies for a large amount of Defense at the start of every even turn. Other than that, the C slot can be exchanged for almost any other C slot if one desires.
Close Def makes for a excellent Sacred Seal, increasing Chrom's already high Defense when attacked at close range and also granting a Resistance boost for whenever he's against Dragons. Quick Riposte also makes for a great choice of Seal as it opens up Chrom's B slot for another skill such as Renewal which when combined with Falchion can potentially be enough to sustain Chrom enough to utilize Quick Riposte multiple times in one match.

Sacred Seal: Distant Def / Quick Riposte
Even with his low Resistance, Chrom can work very well with Distant Counter, especially with his Resistance being able to be pushed up to decent levels with skills.
An Attack boon with Speed bane is recommended here. Attack helps him to secure KOs against mages while the lost Speed won’t be missed too much. The refined Falchion is a powerful weapon, granting Chrom a large boost to stats when adjacent to an ally and consistent healing through Renewal. For Assist, anything can work fine with Reposition being a safe general choice. For Special, Sol helps to keep Chrom healthy while his naturally high attack power should help him to deal decent damage. For an offensive alternative, Blue Flame works fantastically since he wants to be adjacent to allies regardless for the Falchion buff.
Of course, as the name implies, Distant Counter is the only A slot option for this set. This allows Chrom to retaliate against ranged foes such as archers and mages. While he possesses poor Resistance naturally, his high HP allows him to survive one attack from a non-blue mage with relative ease while his high Attack gives him good OHKO potential. For the B slot, Quick Riposte is the recommended choice as it allows Chrom to perform guaranteed follow-up attacks when he’s above 70% HP and is attacked. Guard is another strong choice that helps Chrom to counter units with skills that boost Special Cooldown such as Bold Fighter. Renewal is also a good option that synergises with Chrom’s refined Falchion to provide a lot of healing. For the C slot, Panic Ploy is a strong contender that Chrom can work very well with thanks to his high HP. Infantry Pulse is also a strong option for the same reason. Outside of this, a variety of C slots can work, so feel free to mix and match.
Finally, Distant Def as the Sacred Seal helps Chrom even further against enemy mages and other ranged units. If he is not running Quick Riposte in the B slot, the Quick Riposte Sacred Seal is also a solid option.

Sacred Seal: Attack +3 / Heavy Blade
With his immense Attack, Chrom is one of the best wielders of the Brave Sword.
With an Attack boon, Brave Sword+ and Attack Sacred Seal, Chrom reaches 51 Attack. Combine that with Death Blow and Chrom reaches an extremely devastating 59 Attack. While Death Blow 4 is optimal, Death Blow 3 is absolutely fine give how expensive Death Blow 4 is. This 59 damage attack is done twice thanks to the Brave Sword granting an immediate follow up attack before the opponent even has a chance to respond. This also allows him to completely bypass the Speed check for doubling, hence why Speed is the ideal bane.
Chill Def is a strong contender for the B slot, helping Chrom and any physical allies to deal more damage to whichever enemy has the highest Defense. Hit and Run is another option, allowing Chrom to automatically move back one space after combat, allowing him to potentially remove himself from danger without any extra effort required. Swordbreaker also serves as a potential B slot skill as tankier sword units such as Black Knight, Sigurd, and Xander are able to survive his initial onslaught.
The C slot remains a flexible slot. A Wave skill such as Even Atk Wave allows Chrom to boost himself at the start of even numbered turns without any external support. However, this is far from required, so feel free to experiment with different C slot options until you find something that works for you. Drive skills are safe general choices that work in almost any team composition. For Special, both Bonfire and Luna serve as great options, with Bonfire playing off of Chrom’s good Defense and Luna cutting the defenses of opponents. The assist skill is open to player preference. Reposition makes for a good standard choice on almost any build, but any assist can work.
If you don’t want to use the Attack Seal, Heavy Blade is also a good option for the Sacred Seal given Chrom's huge Attack stat which will let him activate it fairly consistently, thus allowing him to activate his Special faster and also allows for longer cooldown Specials like Ignis and Aether to be potentially considered.

Sacred Seal: HP +5 / Panic Ploy
A build every Falchion unit can run, but thanks to having the HP pool, Chrom is the best option for it.
With a HP boon and the HP +5 Seal, Chrom has 55 HP, meaning that as long as Chrom is at full HP, Chrom can make use of Reciprocal aid to trade his HP over to an ally and top off any unit at base in the game except Arden. In addition to this, Chrom can easily heal himself so he can perform another heal thanks to Falchion’s Renewal passive and the Renewal skill. This makes Chrom very powerful at playing a healing support role. With a refined Falchion, Chrom gains Renewal 3 for even better health recovery. You can forge the Falchion for its unique effect to give Chrom a substantial combat boost with it’s +4 to all stats while adjacent to an ally, but you could also go for one of the other forges which will grant Chrom with +5 HP, taking him to 60 HP and allowing him to fully heal Arden. Unless you want him to specifically heal Arden, using the unique Falchion refinery option is recommended.
For the A slot, Atk/Def Bond works fantastically as it synergises perfectly with the refined Falchion and boosts his two most important stats, making him effective in combat if necessary. As a budget alternative, the Fury skill gives Chrom a boost to his all-round combat effectiveness. Not only that, but the health reduction effect of Fury is effectively negated thanks to all the passive healing that Chrom is receiving. With Sol in his Special slot, Chrom will receive even more healing and thanks to his massive Attack, he should receive a substantial chunk of HP from it. For a more offensive Special, Blue Flame can grant a massive boost to damage when Chrom is adjacent to an ally. As a cheaper offensive alternative, Luna is also very effective. Thanks to his massive HP pool, Chrom makes amazing use of Panic Ploy, allowing him to provide support that way in addition to his healing capabilities. He can also provide support through Infantry Pulse which will be beneficial on a team with other infantry units. If you do not want Panic Ploy or Infantry Pulse in the C slot, pretty much any C slot can work.
You could alternatively run Ardent Sacrifice over Reciprocal Aid. Ardent Sacrifice is not as good as Reciprocal Aid for healing high HP targets such as Hector, but Ardent Sacrifice is a fine choice if you wish to heal units who only usually need a bit of HP.
Introduction
Chrom comes through as one of five Falchion wielders available in Heroes, the others being Marth, Masked Marth, Lucina and Alm. Chrom can be considered as the most defensive of the Falchion users, possessing the best physical bulk of the bunch. He’s not just bulk though; he also has extremely impressive offensive power, though at the cost of his Speed.
At 47 HP, 37 Attack, and 31 Defense, Chrom has the best of these three stats when compared to the other Falchion units. 37 Attack in itself is extremely high and allows him to deal a lot of damage in a single attack. 47 HP and 31 Defense is also very impressive physical bulk, allowing him to soak up quite a bit of damage. This bulk is only supported further by the Falchion itself which grants Renewal 2 and effectiveness against dragons when unforged, but can now be forged for Renewal 3 and the ability to gain a four point boost to each stat when adjacent to an ally. The Sealed Falchion is also available to Chrom, but the requirement to be damaged and the loss of Renewal is not worth the extra one point boost to each stat that Sealed Falchion has over the regular refined Falchion.
However, Chrom is not without his flaws. While he may have the highest HP, Attack and Defense of the Falchion crew, he also has the lowest Speed and Resistance of the bunch. At 25 Speed, Chrom is very slow, allowing himself to be easily doubled by middling Speed units such as Ike. His Resistance of 17 is also very low, making Chrom very susceptible to attacks from enemy mages, with even green mages such as Nino being capable of a ORKO, though this would require some support given Chrom's weapon triangle advantage.
All in all, Chrom is a pretty good sword unit with a good personal weapon, amazing Attack and great bulk but poor Speed and Resistance. He’s also fairly expensive to build efficiently with Chrom’s base skills doing him no real favors besides Falchion and immediate access to Aether. Build him well and Chrom will serve you well in return.
Strengths
High Attack
At 37 Attack, Chrom possesses the second highest Attack of any sword unit, being beaten by Soleil. This puts Chrom with Falchion at 53 Attack, making him hit extremely hard and deal plentiful damage. He also has 45 Attack neutral with the Brave Sword, making him a fantastic user of said weapon.
Great physical bulk
With 47 HP, 31 Defense and in-built Renewal in the Falchion, Chrom is very good at soaking physical damage. With the right setup, he can be made into a solid physical wall and become very hard to take down by green and red physical units.
Falchion
The unforged Falchion is a serviceable weapon for Chrom, granting him Renewal 2 and effective damage against dragons. This weapon unforged will grant him respectable bulk thanks to the self-healing from Renewal. This weapon truly shines when refined however, granting Chrom with Renewal 3 for even better self-sustainability and a +4 bonus to all stats bar HP whenever adjacent to an ally, pushing his offensive and defensive stats even further.
Weaknesses
Low Speed
At 25 Speed, Chrom is very slow and one of the slowest sword units overall. This makes him susceptible to double attacks and is also unable to double all but the slowest of units.
Low Resistance
At 17 Resistance, Chrom is very susceptible to being taken down by mages and dragons. Even green mages will deal a good chunk of damage to Chrom with some such as Nino being able to KO Chrom due to his low Speed.
Team Options
Counters
Given his low Speed and Resistance, it’s no surprise that Chrom has a serious mage weaknesses, with mages of any color being able to deal great damage if no KO him in a single round of combat. He also struggles against powerful lance units, namely bulky blues with good defenses.
-
Bulky Blues: Even with his massive Attack, Chrom still falls victim to the Weapon Triangle. Any blue unit with high Defense or High Attack and Speed will make for an effective counter to Chrom. Units such as Nowi, Hardin, and Shiro are very defensive and can take Chrom’s attack, even with Nowi being weak to Falchion. Meanwhile, units such as Tana, Shigure, and Cordelia all possess strong Attack and Speed, allowing them to double and KO Chrom.
-
Blue Mages: Given his very poor Resistance, it’s no surprise that blue mages such as Reinhardt, Linde, and Ishtar will have no problem dealing with Chrom. These three can all achieve a ORKO on Chrom with little to no effort required on their part.
- Red and Green Mages: Even red mages with no advantage and green mages with a disadvantage can deal high damage to Chrom, if not outright KO him. For example, Bridal Tharja, SM Eirika, and Celica are capable of a ORKO with little investment thanks to their great offensive stats. Winter Tharja is also capable of fighting him well thanks to her high defenses. Nino, Spring Sharena, and Summer Elise can deal high damage to Chrom and can also ORKO with some support.

Getting Chrom's health to under 80% would increase his attack and defense by 12 with the Sealed Falchion and Brazen skill. With that kind of attack, Chrom will easily proc Heavy Blade speed up his offensive skill without problems. Astra is just one chose, but Dragon Fang or Luna will also be effective for armored units. Vantage will allow Chrom to attack with his high attack before an opponent, perhaps killing them. Swap is just what I have but reposition is probably better. Reciprocal aid is also good to bring his health down without fighting, but only if you are controlling him, because the AI can do crazy things. The seal can also be replace with quick riposte for better early round damage, and if his health drops to 75%-70%, both will be in affect, allowing him to fell strong foes.I almost put panic ploy, but I remembered that his health will not be full so anything besides that should be fine (Atk Tactic for mixed units or Infantry pulse for a mostly infantry build is what I use). Buffing his stats, mainly attack and def, to high degrees will allow him to finish armored units and Nowi without much hassle. I group him with a regular Marth with his special Falchion and Drive Atk 2 in both his C and Seal slot along with performing Azura, providing an insane attack to fell the mightiest of foes. He is, of course, still very susceptible to magic with a measly 19 res with a bane in it at 40+6, but it's helped by the Falchion's ability. His slow speed will get him doubled by even brave wielders if it is not supplemented. Defensive builds Robin(M), Winter Thar'ja, and even regular Henry can destroy him if they get their phase without letting him retreat. Dragons will be no problem for the most part.

Fury 3 and Sealed Falchion allows for you to reach some crazy high damage, with Wrath 3 only adding even more damage with the increased special damage, and decreased cool-down. Fury lowers your health after any sort of encounter, and so after the first interaction, whether you took damage or not, the static 6 from Fury 3 is applied, activating Sealed Falchion's +5 to all stats. Because of this, Chrom will be at some crazy high attack, especially with Fury 3, and so Heavy Blade 3 on the seal allows for Aether to come incredibly quickly, especially against low attack units, and can annihilate low attack tanks. Atk Smoke 3 on the seal is a low cost fodder from Kaze and allows for Chrom to reduce damage from surrounding enemies, and with their lowered attack allow for Chrom to get more use out of Heavy Blade.

Chrom is a good sword lord to invest into, especially since he's easy to get at a 3-4 rarity.
Rally Attack & Hone Attack is something that all Lords need since their main focus should be on attack power.
Brazen Attack/Defense & Quick Riposte helps improve his attack, speed, & defense and with his Falchion's healing ability as well as his Aether special, he should have no problem worrying about having a healer with him. (Especially his little sister, Lissa.)
And Heavy Blade is also useful to have since his attack power is high and the fact that Chrom does share some inspiration from Ike (Along with Roy & Hector, the popular & ideal lords)
Chrom will be able to keep the Hero King's legacy alive.

Unorthodox Player Phase Chrom
Sealed Falchion (Weapon)
Something you would not see on regular Chrom, but can actually work out nicely with enough investment and dedication. With a Speed superboon, he can be surprisingly fast for someone that mostly focuses on hitting hard.
Reposition (Assist)
Very self-explanatory.
Bonfire / Draconic Aura / Glimmer (Special)
Bonfire is the preferred Special of choice over Draconic Aura due to the higher damage output it gives. However, this does not mean that Draconic Aura isn't useless in this scenario.
Glimmer can also be used since he does come with a huge raw power, especially under the effects of Sealed Falchion.
Fury 3 (A-Slot)
A nice budget skill. Funny enough, Exalted Chrom also has this skill in his base kit. So consider this version of Chrom unmounted. This will also allow him to safely enter the effects of Sealed Falchion, granting him powerful stat boosts during combat.
Desperation 3 (B-Slot)
With the right setup, Chrom can definitely make use of this skill.
Threaten Spd 3 (C-Slot)
A makeshift, budget skill that allows Chrom to double against certain amount of units.
Heavy Blade 3 (Sacred Seal)
Chrom has excellent raw Attack stat, making him a very solid candidate to run this seal.
-----
Pros:
+ Excellent Attack stat that allows him to score one-hit KO's on many Green units
+ Has good HP pool that allows him to run skills like Panic Ploy or Infantry Pulse
+ Has good Defense, making him a solid melee duellist
+ As a Falchion user, he is good with taking on most Dragon units
+ Following that, he can make use of either Falchion refinements, which furthers his build creativity
+ One of the few units with Aether, being an offensive and recovery Special
+ Incredibly common through summoning, so it's not hard to pull for ideal IV's for him
Cons:
- At neutral Speed IV, Chrom is not very fast and he will get doubled a lot
- Has below average Res, so he will get knocked out even by powerful Green Mages like Nino
- Requires hefty amount of Skill Inheritance to be good
