Boons
- +SPD: Speed is best for his offensive potential and also helps avoid being doubled by many fast meta threats
- +ATK: A boon in Attack also makes for a great choice, as it increases his raw damage output.
Neutral
- DEF: Although not as important as Attack or Speed, Cain prefers a neutral value in Defense in order to keep his physical bulk intact.
Banes
- -RES: Resistance is his most acceptable bane, due to it being Cain's weakest stat and is often not needed.
- -HP: A bane in HP is also acceptable, as Cain is not a strong mixed tank and should focus on offense.

Cain's stats spread leans toward offense much more than defense. In a Cavalry Team, with Hone Cavalry buff he can reach a respectable 38 base Attack/Speed before boon/bane and skills, allowing him to be a decent Firesweep Sword or Brave Sword user.
This set is a standard offensive build for Player Phase-oriented units like Cain and the skill choices are fairly straightforward. Cain will want mainly Speed then Attack to facilitate his attacking role, thus skills that grant these two stats like Swift Sparrow or Life and Death are no-brainers on him.
Swordbreaker allows him to dispatch units like Ayra, Mia or Zelgius who would pose a major problem otherwise for him. Hit and Run and its weaker equivalent. Drag Back is also not a bad choice to keep him safe.

Cain can run a decent duelist set in Cavalry Team thanks to how immensely powerful Cavalry's buffs are. It is worth mentioning however alternatives like Sigurd, Xander or Eldigan would do a much better job. However, if you just want another to use Cain specifically then this build could work on him.
For the weapon, Slaying Edge is the best for general use, followed by Wo Dao. Ruby Sword is a lot more specialized toward checking Green and can remedy Cain's tankiness, but his use would be a lot more limited.
Cain's Attack isn't particularly great to use Glimmer, so Moonbow with Slaying Edge's reduced cooldown is best for him.
Distant Counter is the go-to premium choice for A slot for most Enemy Phase units. Outside of that, Cain can run various options including Close Def, Fury or Triangle Adept; all will help him tremendously in combat as his bulk is quite mediocre.
His B slot is dependent on which threats you want him to handle. Breaker skills are obviously specialized for this purpose, and Swordbreaker will give him the most values out of Breaker skills in general due to the prevalence of units like Ayra or Zelgius. Breaker + Quick Riposte for his Sacred Seal slot is a great combination to provide maximum coverage possible.
If you run Quick Riposte on him in his B slot, however, you can switch to Close Def or Distant Def for his Seal slot for more bulkiness depending on whether you use Distant Counter or not. Guard is another interesting choice that can go well with Quick Riposte Seal, allowing him to handle units with skills like Steady Breath, Bold Fighter or Vengeful Fighter a lot more effectively.
Introduction
Cain is a Red Sword Cavalry with decent offensive stats, mediocre defensive capability and nothing particularly outstanding compared to his peers.
Unfortunately for Cain he occupies a niche that has much better choices in Brave Roy, Eliwood, Eldigan and Siegbert, and his Enemy's Phase potential is vastly outclassed by units like Xander or Sigurd. He can function decently as a Player Phase unit but most of the time he is not recommended as a mainstay in most teams, be it Cavalry teams or normal teams.
Strengths
Decent offensive stat spread
Cain's 32/32 offensive spread can be combined with strong class-exclusive buffs such as Hone Calvary in order to make him a competent attacker, though not on the level of units like Brave Roy or Siegbert.
Good Mobility
In addition to his superior mobility, Cain has access to class-exclusive buffs such as Hone Cavalry.
Weaknesses
Mediocre defensive stats
27 Defense and 21 Resistance are quite poor, making him unsuited for taking on enemies' hits, especially magic attacks.
Occupies an unneeded niche
Being a Red Sword Cavalry hurts Cain quite a lot, as he has many competitions who outdo him as a unit for a spot, as well as occupying a niche that is often not needed for Cavalry team.
Team Options
Counters
In general, Cain will struggle heavily against two typical types of enemies:
- Physical Tanks: Cain's damage output is not enough to get past tanky blue units like Nowi, Lukas, Effie, Winter Robin, and so on.
- Magical Threats: Mages or Healers with high damage output can completely decimate Cain. Amongst them, Reinhardt and Micaiah are the two most notable counters as they can easily dispatch Cain regardless of builds if they initiate on him.

{Cain = Eldigan + Brave Roy}
As the description above says, this build aims to make Cain an extremely bulky unit while retaining an offensive spread that is only slightly weaker than Brave Roy's. Before the weapon refinery update, Cain's stat spread was nothing special. An offensive spread of 32/32 is decent but 27 defense is just "meh". Now with the ability to upgrade weapons, Cain's stat spread went from decent to extraordinarily good.
Like I mentioned previously, this set aims to make Cain very bulky while retaining an above-average offensive spread. With slaying edge (+def), Cain's defensive spread shoots up to 44 hp and 31 def on top of 49 atk and 35 spd. To put this into perspective, one hone and one fortify cavalry means that his stat spread when he initiates combat skyrockets to 44 HP/55 atk/41 spd/41 def/27 res.
The reason why Bonfire is chosen is because Cain can get an extra 20 damage when he initiates combat with horse emblem buffs and is a better option than Luna, even without horse emblem buffs. Sturdy Blow is a good A slot since it ensures that Cain hits hard while still being able to tank hits well. Armored Blow is also an option but he will not be as hard hitting in exchange for more tankiness. Swordbreaker is a great skill for him as he cannot outspeed too many sword units, but can still one shot squishy archers and mages. Hone cavalry is self-explanatory but other cavalry buffs will do just fine. An atk seal, spd seal, or a def seal all work great with this set. Swap is great for tanky melee units such as Cain who can take a hit for one of your allies. Reposition can also be considered for an assist skill.
As powerful as this Cain is, he still remains relatively weak to mages. Although he will most likely not die to many due to his high speed and high hp, he will eat a lot of damage and be knocked out of Swordbreaker range.

Sure Cain may not be the best cavalier around, but he can sure as hell get the job done. The main reason why Cain is useable is because he sits at a nice middle ground; average attack, average speed, slightly above average HP, and decent defense. The point of this build is to make Cain into a fast, bulky cavalier with decent offenses. Fury 3 and a Defense refined weapon make this possible, adding to Cain’s Attack, HP, Speed, and Defense. Bonfire is taken to capitalize on this newfound bulk, and Swordbreaker is used to ensure good matchups against units such as Ayra, Siegbert, Mia, and Ryoma.

Cain can match with his brother Abel, taking the quad build for himself to utilize his good mix of offense. +3 attack or +3 speed SS can be taken depending on your preference, one grants him more damage while the latter gives him better quading potential.

In a game full of Sword Cavaliers with legendary weapons, who can help a Summoner's dream of having a Wo Dao cavalier come true?
Look no further than Cain, the Bull. Possessing good mixed stats that can be emphasized in a Horse Emblem team, this build focuses on amplifying his Atk and doubling enemies in order to get a charged Moonbow off in the same round of combat. While his Def and Res are lackluster compared to some other potential duelists (e.g. Def+ Mathilda), Cain's Spd and Atk stat make up for his defensive shortcomings by preventing most units from doubling him without their own Spd buffs or Swordbreaker.
Wo Dao+ with a Spd emphasis are used to increase Cain's offensive power while keeping his Spd high enough to enable doubling with the help of Darting Blow 3 and Hone/Goad Cavalry. On initiation, he boasts 41 Spd without Hone Cavalry; with them, this stat increases to 47, along with a fearsome 55 Atk stat.
Draw Back is the typical support skill for my Duelist archetype, allowing a duelist to protect a healer or nuke from harm, or pulling a tank into position to absorb a few hits.
Moonbow has the best synergy with Wo Dao+, though both Glimmer and Daylight were considered for the role. Glimmer could be taken for a riskier increase in damage, while Daylight increases Cain's sustainability.
Darting Blow was primarily chosen to help increase Cain's matchups- the A slot is largely up to the user's choice, and other suggested skills include Steady Stance for a more defensive duelist or Swift Sparrow for increased power.
Wings of Mercy is excellent for surprise attacks that leave a foe reeling and discombobulated, but again, B slot is also largely up to a Summoner's preference.
Fortify Cavalry is the final straw used in my personal Duelist archetype, allowing all other heroes in a Horse Emblem team to receive a defensive buff while allowing the Duelist to still obtain the offensive Hone that allows their Atk and Def to soar.
