Assets

  • +ATK: +ATK is a fantastic Asset for Brave Alm, as the extra points of Attack improve the effectiveness of Scendscale. Bonus true damage and greater attack power make it far easier for Alm to secure OHKOs against enemy heroes. Furthermore, +ATK is a 4-point Asset instead of the usual 3, making it even more appealing.

  • +SPD: A Speed Asset is also valuable on Alm, as it pushes his base Speed to a respectable 38. Though Alm will still struggle to secure regular follow-up attacks without additional support, the bonus Speed safeguards him from a greater number of enemy follow-up attacks.

Neutral

  • DEF: Alm is most effective at fighting physical opponents who target his Defense, so preserving his base 37 Defense is ideal. This is a passable Flaw in comparison to Attack and Speed however.

  • RES: Alm suffers from poor Resistance, but decreasing this stat further leaves him increasingly vulnerable to enemy magic attacks that may defeat Alm in one hit. Resistance is not useful enough to be a valuable Asset, but it’s worth avoiding a Flaw when possible.

Flaws

  • -HP: HP is less useful than both Defense and Resistance, and a lower HP pool complements skills such as Vantage and Wrath that Alm can make great use of.

Show Explanation/Analysis

Preferred IV: +ATK or +SPD / -HP

  • +ATK allows Alm to maximise the damage of Scendscale, whereas +SPD improves his follow-up ability. +ATK is preferred between the two, and Alm’s ideal Flaw is -HP to preserve his overall bulk as best as possible.

Weapon: Dracofalchion

  • Offering bonus Attack, effectiveness against dragon heroes and a potential +5 to all of Alm’s combat stats, the Dracofalchion as a solid weapon that has little competition. This weapon offers plenty of Attack power for Alm to gain true damage from Scendscale with, and allows him to deal with prominent dragon threats.

Assist: Reposition / Flexible

  • Reposition offers straight-forward maneuverability that benefits his team greatly, but this skill can be replaced with something more benefitting for the team.

Special: Draconic Aura / Glimmer

  • Draconic Aura offers immense bonus damage thanks to Alm’s impressive Attack, and can be charged quickly thanks to the short 3-turn cooldown. This Special is highly effective against bulky, high Defense heroes.
  • Alternatively, Glimmer can be a valuable alternative as Scendscale ensures that Alm will always deal respectable damage. Furthermore, Glimmer can be charged immediately with Special Spiral, making it an effective choice alongside a refresher who can restore Alm’s action and allow him to activate his Special against a new opponent.

Passive A: Scendscale

  • Alm’s best A slot skill is clear: no offensive skill offers as much sheer damage as Scendscale. Converting 25% of Alm’s Attack into true damage, Scendscale contributes an extraordinary amount of damage to all of Alm’s attacks. As a trade-off, Alm takes 7 damage if he initiated combat, which can be helpful alongside skills with an HP threshold, but is otherwise a small disadvantage. Regardless, Scendscale is a magnificent skill.

Passive B: Special Spiral / Wrath / Chill Def

  • Special Spiral allows Alm to charge his Special skill more quickly after initiating combat, allowing Alm to deal high damage with powerful Specials immediately after engaging an enemy hero. This allows Alm to fight almost any opponent, as the bonus damage from Scendscale alongside his Special offers unbelievable damage.
  • Wrath is a decent alternative that can also improve the potency of Alm’s Special skills, though is dependent on an HP threshold. This is reasonable to achieve thanks to Scendscale’s self-inflicted damage and Alm’s high Defense, but should be considered when comparing this skill to Special Spiral.
  • Chill Def, while not as impactful as the aforementioned skills, is a much more accessible choice as the skill is present in Alm’s base kit. Though it offers no bonuses to Alm’s Special skill, it allows him to deal bonus damage against targeted heroes.

Passive C: Rouse Atk/Def / Even Attack Wave / Threaten Atk/Spd

  • Rouse Atk/Def complements the Dracofalchion nicely, and offers a hefty bonus to both Attack and Defense: two of Alm’s most important stats. This allows him to deal even greater damage while taking enemy physical attacks more comfortably.
  • Even Attack Wave provides a periodic +6 bonus to Attack, which can be very helpful alongside Alm’s other attack-boosting skills. However, this effect can be achieved through other means.
  • Threaten Atk/Spd, while difficult to take full advantage of on a Player Phase build, is still a respectable option with careful play and good positioning. The bonuses offered by this skill will swing many engagements in Alm’s favour, making it a powerful tool in his kit.

Sacred Seal: Brazen Atk/Spd / Sturdy Blow / Renewal / Darting Blow

  • Brazen Atk/Spd is a potent S skill that Alm can use quite easily thanks to the damage inflicted by Scendscale. Though it won’t be active at the start of a battle, Brazen Atk/Spd is a powerful bonus and one of Alm’s best sources of additional Speed.
  • Sturdy Blow is an alternative that offers less Attack than Brazen Atk/Spd, but grants this bonus without the need for reduced HP. This can improve Alm’s effectiveness at the start of combat and also offers bonus Defense, but this advantage is negligible when Brazen skills would kick in.
  • Renewal is a decent consideration to offset the damage from Scendscale and offer Alm some improved durability. This can be nice, as otherwise Alm would have to sacrifice his much more competitive B slot for Renewal or Mystic Boost.
  • Darting Blow allows Alm to achieve follow-up attacks more frequently, and complements the Dracofalchion nicely if he can activate his weapon’s effect. However, Brazen Atk/Spd is more effective once Alm reaches the necessary HP threshold.

Show Explanation/Analysis

Preferred IV: +ATK or +SPD / -RES

  • +ATK allows Alm to maximise the damage of Scendscale, whereas +SPD improves his follow-up ability. -HP is preferred once again, as it allows Alm to reach the threshold for Vantage more easily.

Weapon: Dracofalchion

  • Offering bonus Attack, effectiveness against dragon heroes and a potential +5 to all of Alm’s combat stats, the Dracofalchion as a solid weapon that has little competition. In addition, this playstyle of rushing Alm to the frontline and leaving him in range of enemy heroes to KO on Enemy Phase complements the Dracofalchion’s bonus effect, allowing him to reap the benefits with ease.

Glimmer also offers a shorter cooldown than Draconic Aura, allowing it to fire more often over the course of multiple engagements.

Passive B: Vantage / Wrath / Chill Def

  • Vantage synergizes nicely with Scendscale’s self-inflicted damage as well as Alm’s impressive physical bulk, as these assets allow him to reach the necessary HP threshold with ease. Once he reaches this point, few melee heroes will be able to withstand his attacks, thanks to his impressive base Attack and the overwhelming power of Scendscale. Ranged heroes still pose a threat, but Vantage allows Alm to deal with the majority of melee opponents.
  • Wrath is an alternative that shares the same HP threshold as Vantage, but offers far less Enemy Phase utility. Nevertheless, Wrath can be a solid pick up if Alm has enough support to ensure his survival during Enemy Phase without Vantage.
  • Chill Def is Alm’s innate B slot skill, and while not as useful as the previous two skills, it can be passable if neither is available.

Passive C: Threaten Atk/Spd / Even Attack Wave / Rouse Atk/Def

  • Threaten Atk/Spd is much more effective in this set, as there is a greater emphasis on fighting during Enemy Phase. If a foe is within 2 spaces, Alm will benefit from a 10 point swing in Speed, while bolstering his own Attack by an additional 5 points. This shift should turn most match-ups in his favour, given the immense synergy between his Attack stat and his other skills.
However, this effect can be achieved through other means, and is generally less useful than the previous skills.

Sacred Seal: Brazen Atk/Spd / Brazen Atk/Def / Close Def / Threaten Def

  • Brazen Atk/Spd is a potent S skill that Alm can use quite easily thanks to the damage inflicted by Scendscale. Sharing a similar HP threshold to Vantage, Alm will always achieve these bonuses once he meets the requirement for Vantage, greatly improving his ability to KO enemy attackers. Brazen Atk/Spd allows for possible follow-ups on foes who withstand his first hit, but Brazen Atk/Def or Atk/Res are equally valuable.
  • If Alm is vulnerable to enemy attacks despite the benefits of Vantage, Close Defense can offer additional defensive bonuses to ensure his survival.
  • Though Threaten Def is far from the greatest skill, it synergises nicely with Threaten Atk/Spd to provide a greater debuff to enemy heroes within 2 spaces. This seal offers an effective 4 points of damage if it lands, improving Alm’s KO potential even further.

Show Explanation/Analysis

Preferred IV: +ATK / -HP

  • +ATK is a necessity here, as Alm values every single point of Attack he can muster. -HP is the preferred Flaw, but any of Alm’s other stats can be passable here as Alm is not expected to fight on Enemy Phase at all with this set.

Weapon: Brave Sword

  • The Brave Sword may seem like a drastic drop in power compared to Alm’s Dracofalchion, but alongside Scendscale, this weapon can deal immense true damage before the enemy has a chance to retaliate. With +ATK and the Brave Sword equipped, Alm can expect to deal about 12 points of true damage in addition to his regular damage output before considering the impact of his Sacred Seal or additional buffs.

Alongside Special Spiral and the Brave Sword, Alm can activate this skill at the start of every engagement after his first round of combat.
  • Though Glimmer is a worthy alternative, the Brave Sword ensures that Alm can activate 3-charge Special skills when he initiates combat, making the shorter cooldown of Glimmer little advantage.

Passive A: Scendscale

  • Scendscale is absolutely non-negotiable in this build. This skill makes the Brave Sword a competitive option, offering fantastic true damage to Alm’s attacks that would otherwise be insufficient. If Alm can boost his Attack high enough through team support, few opponents will hope to withstand his strength when initiating.

Passive B: Special Spiral

  • Special Spiral allows Alm to charge his Special skill more quickly after initiating combat, allowing Alm to deal high damage with powerful Specials immediately after engaging an enemy hero. Alongside the Brave Sword, Alm can use 3-charge Specials like Draconic Aura when initiating combat, greatly improving his ability to KO bulky foes.

Passive C: Rouse Atk/Def / Even Attack Wave / Threaten Atk/Spd

  • As Alm will likely carve a path through enemy heroes on his own, Rouse Atk/Def can be a valuable pick-up. This skill enhances both his Attack and Defense, providing a valuable +6 bonus that will further improve his damage output.
  • Even Attack Wave provides a periodic +6 bonus to Attack, which can be very helpful alongside Alm’s other attack-boosting skills. Though this effect can be achieved through other means, Attack Wave is a fantastic choice to maintain Alm’s high Attack stat and maximise his damage with the Brave Sword.
  • Threaten Atk/Spd, while difficult to take full advantage of on a Player Phase build, is still a respectable option with careful play and good positioning. The bonuses offered by this skill will swing many engagements in Alm’s favour, making it a powerful tool in his kit.

Sacred Seal: Brazen Atk/Spd / Sturdy Blow / Darting Blow

  • Brazen Atk/Spd is a potent S skill that Alm can use quite easily thanks to the damage inflicted by Scendscale. Though it won’t be active at the start of a battle, Brazen Atk/Spd is a powerful bonus that can improve Alm’s Attack considerably and potentially allow for 4x attacks with an effective 40 Speed.
  • Darting Blow can be a fun choice for those looking to land 4x attacks. Though few opponents will survive long enough for the third and fourth attacks to come into play, Darting Blow ensures that no opponent will survive Alm’s attacks should he manage to make a follow-up attack.

Introduction

Brave Alm is a powerful frontline sword infantry with respectable stats almost entirely across the board. He boasts decent HP and Speed alongside fantastic Attack and Defense, though base 20 Resistance leaves him vulnerable to magic attacks. These impressive stats, combined with his arsenal of unique skills, make him a formidable hero who can deal tremendous damage.

The Dracofalchion and Scendscale are what set Alm apart from similar sword infantry. His weapon grants an additional +3 Attack, effective damage against dragon foes, and a powerful +5 boost to all of Alm’s combat stats if he fights with more foes than allies within 2 spaces. On the other hand, Scendscale is an A slot skill which grants 25% of Alm’s Attack stat as bonus true damage to each of his attacks, while damaging him by 7 after initiating combat. Both of these skills are incredibly powerful, and position Alm as one of the most threatening opponents when it comes to melee battles.

With that said, Alm isn’t without his drawbacks. Though Alm can easily cut down enemy dragons on Player Phase, he struggles to take any of their attacks on Enemy Phase. The same can be said for mages, who will take advantage of his low Resistance to OHKO or 2HKO Alm with ease. Alm generally struggles against most ranged opponents, but due to the impressive advantages of Scendscale it’s rarely worthwhile to sacrifice this skill in favour of Distant Counter. Nevertheless, Alm is an incredibly capable infantry hero who offers near unrivalled offensive power.

“I’m here because I was called. I have a duty to perform, and I’ll perform it. No more, and no less.”

Alm, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia

Strengths

Great Base Stats

Alm wields impressive stats in every area except for Resistance. 38 base Attack before accounting for the additional +19 from his weapon, alongside 42 HP, 35 Speed and 37 Defense turn Alm into a strong melee hero.

Dracofalchion

The Dracofalchion grants a variety of bonuses to improve Alm’s strength in combat. These benefits include +3 Attack, effective damage to dragons, and a potential +5 to all of his combat stats. This weapon allows Alm to deal tremendous damage when paired with Scendscale, and makes him a suitable counter to strong dragon heroes.

Scendscale

Scendscale offers phenomenal bonus damage thanks to Alm’s impressive base Attack, allowing him to punch holes in even the most defensive heroes. Opponents like Lukas, Surtr and Arden, infamous for their impressive base Defense, will struggle to withstand Alm’s blows thanks to this impressive skill.

Great Skill Availability

As an infantry hero, Brave Alm has access to a variety of powerful skills. This includes, but is not limited to, Special Spiral, Wrath and Null C-Disrupt. This offers Alm fantastic versatility, allowing him to pick different skills depending on what build best complements his team.

Weaknesses

Poor Resistance

Alm’s stats point towards one major weakness: his subpar Resistance. With only base 20 Resistance, Alm will struggle to take any magical attacks; especially if his opponent is able to make a follow-up attack.

No Distant Counter

As Scendscale is such an instrumental skill at Alm’s disposal, it’s difficult to recommend anything as a suitable alternative. This highlights an additional weakness: without Distant Counter, Alm cannot hope to combat ranged opponents on Enemy Phase, though opting for this skill comes at the cost of the immense bonus damage offered by Scendscale. Typically, Alm must do without Distant Counter.
