Optimal
Alondite A Steady Breath
Budget: Steady Stance 3
Pivot B Wrath 3
Budget: Wings of Mercy 3
Black Luna C Panic Ploy 3
Budget: Threaten Spd 3
SP1,580SSpeed +1

Show Explanation/Analysis
  • Weapon: Alondite
  • Support Skill: Pivot / Swap
  • Special: Black Luna
  • A Slot: Steady Breath / Steady Stance 3
  • B Slot: Wrath 3 / Wings of Mercy 3
  • C Slot: Panic Ploy 3 / Threaten Spd 3 / Varies on team
  • Sacred Seal: Speed +1

With this build, he can take on a large multitude of enemies: all green units, red units, and most colorless units. Blue lances are in danger of being OHKO by the combined work of Black Luna and Wrath attacks. Black Luna ignores 80% of DEF/RES while Steady Breath and Wrath work well together reducing the total wait time on Black Luna tremendously. Wrath also adds another 10 damage to the Black Knight's special activation.

For example, we will take a blue unit with 30 Def. Black Luna will ignore 80% of that DEF, so he will be reduced to 6 DEF. Attacking a blue unit means the Black Knight will reduce his damage by 20%. Level 40 Black Knight will be using Alondite for a total of 50 ATK without buffs. Wrath effect will work under the 75% HP threshold. 50 ATK * 0.8 = 40 ATK. Wrath effect increases the final attack on the blue unit to 50 ATK - 6 DEF: 44 damage for a unit with triangle-advantage and 30 DEF. Many units would be OHKO'd due to the sheer power of the Black Knight.

Ike's Senior (Steady Breath + Wrath + Aether)
Alondite A Steady Breath
Budget: Steady Stance 3
Pivot B Wrath 3
Budget: Renewal 2
Aether C Threaten Atk 3
Budget: Threaten Def 3
SP1,995SAttack +1

Show Explanation/Analysis
  • Weapon: Alondite
  • Support Skill: Pivot / Swap
  • Special: Aether
  • A Slot: Steady Breath / Steady Stance 3
  • B Slot: Wrath 3 / Renewal 3
  • C Slot: Threaten Atk 3 / Threaten Def 3 / Varies on team
  • Sacred Seal: Attack +1

Tailored for long, drawn out modes such as Chain Challenge or Tempest Trials, the Black Knight shows Ike how its done utilizing Aether and Steady Breath to stay standing while Wrath 3 increases Aether damage and heal. Renewal 3 can also be used to great effect. Threaten Atk is for increasing the Black Knight's relevant bulk while Threaten Def will increase damage dealt as well as potential heals off of Aether. Functions well with armor buffs increasing his offense and defense to unorthodox levels.

The Unfallen (Steady Breath + Wary Fighter)
Alondite A Steady Breath
Budget: Steady Stance 3
Pivot B Wary Fighter 3
Black Luna C Armor March 3
Budget: Ward Armor
SP1,805SDistant Def 1

Show Explanation/Analysis
  • Weapon: Alondite
  • Support Skill: Pivot / Swap
  • Special: Black Luna / Aether
  • A Slot: Steady Breath / Steady Stance 3
  • B Slot: Wary Fighter 3
  • C Slot: Armor March 3 / Goad Armor / Varies on team
  • Sacred Seal: Speed +1

Wary Fighter + Steady Breath takes the Black Knight's bulk to a whole new level. One exchange with the enemy charges your Black Luna for the next exchange. Aether can be used for improved longevity. This build works effectively with other armored units that allow the units to move two spaces at at time or gives him incredible buffs for baiting purpose.

Greil's Murderer (Fury + Quick Riposte)
Alondite A Fury 3
Pivot B Quick Riposte 3
Budget: Quick Riposte 2
Black Luna C Panic Ploy 3
SP1,745SHP +3

Show Explanation/Analysis
  • Weapon: Alondite
  • Support Skill: Pivot / Swap
  • Special: Black Luna / Aether
  • A Slot: Fury 3 / Life and Death 3 / Swift Sparrow 2
  • B Slot: Quick Riposte 3
  • C Slot: Panic Ploy 3 / Threaten Atk 3 / Ward Armor / Varies on team
  • Sacred Seal: HP +3

The Black Knight can pull off a better version of Hector inside the red category by utilizing Quick Riposte and Distant Counter without eating the A slot that is used for stat-boosting passives. Fury 3 is a great all-around passive while Life and Death 3 is much more consistent. Swift Sparrow 2 is also an option but limited to player-phase engagements which is not preferable on a distant-counter unit that excels at baiting. And because of his good starting speed, he can avoid more double attacks than Hector. With an HP seal and 48 starting HP, he can reach 51 starting HP that lets you Panic everyone outside of Hector and Zephiel.

Introduction

One of the Fire Emblem franchise's most beloved and iconic villains makes his way onto the FEH battlefield. You can pick him up as a reward from Tempest Trials. He's the third character introduced to have his identity hidden. The first is Bruno and second is Masked Marth.

The Black Knight brings his trusty Alondite which can retaliate from any range. Wielding the first character-unique special in the game, Black Luna, he will decimate any foe careless enough to stand before him.

"...Enough talk. Prepare yourself."

-The Black Knight, Path of Radiance

Strengths

Alondite

  • 16 Mt weapon.
  • Can retaliate from any range.
  • Contributes more heavily than a normal weapon to arena score.

Armored Unit

  • Being an armored unit, his BST is among the heaviest in the game.
  • Able to wield Armor move-type buffs.
  • Able to use Wary Fighter for added bulk.
  • Able to use Armor March to repair movement.
  • Heavy contributor to a high Arena score.

High HP

  • 5th highest HP in the game.
  • Allows effective use of Boost Passives and Panic Ploy.
  • Adds to his bulk.
    • Effective padding against popular specials such as Moonbow, Luna, Aether and now Black Luna

Great ATK

  • 6th highest ATK in the game.
  • He deals great damage, especially with move-type buffs.

Great SPD

  • 6th highest SPD in the game.
  • Pairs well with his high ATK and potential move-type buffs to land more double attacks.
  • Adds to his bulk by dodging many double attacks in the game.

High DEF

  • 5th highest DEF in the game.
  • Able to take several physical attacks from nearly any source including lances (outside of Heavy Spears and other armor-slaying items).
  • Pairs well with Quick Riposte, Bonfire or Ignis to deal great damage.
Weaknesses

Low RES

  • 7th lowest RES in the game.
  • At 19 RES, he is able to survive single cast spells due to his 48 HP, but double attacks will cause him trouble.  Olwen and Reinhardt will ORKO him.
  • Mitigated by his high SPD and potential use of Wary Fighter.

Armor Unit

  • Moves 1 space at a time.
  • Mitigated with positional assists or Armor March.

Tempest Trials Unit

  • He will be in limited supply so merging him to +10 will require repeated rewards from the future.
  • He is attained at a neutral IV which means he cannot have an increased stat for optimization.
Team Options

The Black Knight likes to shuffle along next to other armored units:

  • Hector
  • Amelia
  • Sheena
  • Draug
  • Zephiel
  • Effie
  • Gwendolyn

The Black Knight can make a good team with mages that can cover for his weaknesses as he defends them:

  • Nino
  • Julia
  • Sonya
  • Linde
  • Delthea
  • Reinhardt
  • Olwen

The Black Knight also appreciates healers that can keep him standing steady:

  • Mist
  • Genny
  • Priscilla
  • Bridal Lyn
  • Clarine
  • Elise
Counters

All blue magic sources will injure the Black Knight tremendously:

  • Reinhardt - Instantly decimates the Black Knight if he initiates.
  • Olwen - Will likely ORKO the Black Knight if she initiates.
  • Linde
  • Delthea
  • Nowi

Bulky blue units will outlast the Black Knight in a slugfest, but he can potentially outmatch them with Black Luna:

  • Effie
  • Lukas
  • Gwendolyn
  • Nephenee
  • Corrin (F)

Other magic sources will cause the Black Knight some trouble as well:

  • Celica
  • Katarina
  • Tharja
  • Leo
  • Tiki (Y)
  • Tiki (A)

Armor-slaying weapons will deal 50% increased damage to the Black Knight.

Moonbow, Luna, Aether and Black Luna will circumvent much of the Black Knight's defenses to do immense damage.
