This build aims to give Black Knight the ability to double the enemies in both Enemy and Player Phase. It is an all-purpose set that can work pretty much in any setting and demonstrate the full versatility and capacity of this enigmatic general.

Thanks to Bold Fighter and Black Luna, Black Knight can sunder even the toughest physical tanks on initiation, making him extraordinarily dangerous even without IVs.

To compensate for this, the Quick Riposte Seal and an Enemy Phase Passive A should be chosen to give him an equally powerful presence during Enemy Phase. Steady Breath or Warding Breath are both amazing, yet luxury choices that synergize well with Black Luna. The cooldown reduction component of these two guarantee a Black Luna proc during the first engagement and vastly improve his coverage. The Bond skills are also viable options that has the added benefit of also being active during Player Phase (albeit more difficult to utilize than during Enemy Phase). Black Knight’s starting skill Steady Stance is a good option for budget reason.

For his C slot, go for an Armor buffs if he is utilized in an armor team, and flexible if it’s for a mixed team. Armor March is obviously the best out of Armor buffs as the increased mobility helps a lot in positioning or initiation during Player Phase. For mixed team, he can run either standard buffs like Hone Speed or utility skill like Panic Ploy to give the team more versatility. Luxury choices also include the Tactics skills, but those require more specific team composition like 2 armors / 2 fliers for example.

  • Passive B: Vengeful Fighter / Quick Riposte / Vantage

  • Passive C: Armor March / Ward Armor / Flexible

  • Sacred Seal: Distant Def / Close Def / Quick Riposte

Without Bold Fighter, Black Knight works best as a quintessential Enemy Phase fighter. This build focuses on making use of all of his tools to make him the ultimate bait unit for Arena and can handle ranged and melee threats alike.

Steady Breath / Warding Breath are a no brainer for a unit with built-in Distant Counter in their weapon like Black Knight. Outside of that, other Enemy Phase oriented skills like the Bond skills (Atk/Def Bond, Atk/Spd Bond, etc …), the Stance skills (Steady Stance, Fierce Stance, Warding Stance), and the ever viable Distant Def / Close Def are all strong options.

For his B slot, Black Knight works best with Vengeful Fighter or Quick Riposte. Vengeful Fighter is best if he does not use Steady Breath or Warding Breath, as the cooldown reduction component does not stack, while Quick Riposte is best with the Breath skills. However, Vengeful Fighter is still worth considering over Quick Riposte due to its having a lower HP threshold requirement than Quick Riposte.

Outside of these two choices, it is not a bad idea to go with another B passives like a Breaker skill, Guard, Vantage, Renewal, or Wings of Mercy and run a Quick Riposte Sacred Seal.

For Sacred Seals, Close Def and Distant Def are versatile seals that will work well for him, allowing him to handle different threats depending on team composition.

  • Sacred Seal: Quickened Pulse / Quick Riposte

Black Luna is one of the best offensive Specials in the game. This build aims to make Black Knight capable of one-shotting any fools who dare initiate into him with a Wrath boosted Black Luna. To facilitate this, Steady Breath / Warding Breath and Quickened Pulse are a must so he can immediately discharge Black Luna upon retaliation.

The idea behind the build is simple but incredibly effective in Arena, due to most Arena matches lasting only a few turns and Black Knight often only having to handle one or two units per match. If ranged units are not a problem to the team, Black Knight can also run Wo Dao or Slaying Edge instead of Alondite to further exploit this build.

With the existence of skills like Bold Fighter especially at higher score range, sometimes a more prudent approach is preferred. This build is similar to the Enemy Phase build but geared more toward survivability and to finish off the enemy next turn. Thus the skill choices are also much more conservative and specialized to deal with certain threats.

For this reason, Wary Fighter is preferred. While 34 Speed is not bad by any means, Black Knight’s lack of IVs make him quite vulnerable to units who outmerge him or units of similar range having +Speed boon. Furthermore, Wary Fighter also allows him to avoid being doubled by slow but powerful threats like Winter Chrom, Effie, Winter Tharja, Halloween Jakob, or Arden with Bold Fighter / Follow-up Ring.

Another notable choice is Guard. While it does not prevent follow-up, it is very effective against Bold Fighter users like Jakob who rely a lot on Specials to get past Black Knight’s defense.

Introduction

One of the most iconic villains in Fire Emblem franchise, the Black Knight is a powerful and dominating unit with incredible bulk and the rare ability to retaliate regardless of distance thanks to his legendary sword, Alondite. Armed with the unique Special skill Black Luna, Black Knight is capable of blowing a hole through even the tankiest of oppositions and is one of the hardest hitting heroes in the game regardless of his build.

Black Knight is generally deployed in an armor team; however, his versatility and power allow him to work well in any mixed movement team as well, and has no trouble working as a standalone red unit. His status as a Tempest Trial reward is both a blessing and a curse at the same time, as he is available to most players, but it also hinders his customizability and flexibility due to no access to IVs and limited merging potential.

Strengths

Alondite

Having Distant Counter effect in his personal weapon frees up multiple skill options for Black Knight, including the famed Distant Counter + Steady/Warding Breath combination.

Thanks to his high offensive power and good bulk, Black Knight is a solid counter to ranged threats like archers or green mages.

Great physical bulk

Not only does Black Knight possesses amazing HP and Defense, he also comes with 34 base Speed, allowing him to avoid a lot of crucial doubles from units of this Speed range.

Black Luna

Black Luna is an incredibly potent Special for general use. Thanks to it, Black Knight is extremely effective against high Defense units and can deal devastating damage even against lance users or blue dragons.

Armor unit

As an armor unit, Black Knight has access to the incredible Fighter skills. All of these skills are great on him and can massively improve his potential matchups as well as usages. Furthermore, he can enjoy the benefits of armor buffs like Goad/Ward Armor, Armor March or reap the benefit from utility skills like Guidance.

Great Attack

With base 34 Attack combined with a 16 might weapon, Black Knight is definitely not lacking when it comes to dealing damage.

Weaknesses

Terrible Resistance

Base 18 Resistance is very poor for a Distant Counter unit. Black Knight will take massive damage from dragons, mages, and even healers as a result. When he is utilized as a mage check, it is recommended to patch this weakness through the use of Resistance-boosting skills such as Distant Defense.

Poor mobility

Being an armor unit, Black Knight is restricted to one movement naturally. This can be patched up by skills like Armor March and Guidance or through the Armored Boots seal. While this weakness is not particularly crippling on the right team, it can be quite limiting in terms of positioning and increases the risk of him taking unwanted engagements.

Weak to Anti-Armor weapons

The increased relevance of Anti-Armor weapons and the existence of Micaiah poses a great threat to Black Knight in Arena.

Team Options

Black Knight works well in most teams thanks to his versatility. While he is best utilized on a full armor team to grant him the much needed increased mobility through Armor March as well as other armor buffs, he can go well with other movement type units as well, particularly units who provide offensive support like refreshers or one that cover some of his well-defined weaknesses.

  • Armored Units: Hector, Effie, Winter Chrom, Winter Robin, Lyn (LA), and Halloween Jakob are all great teammates that can provide armor buffs for Hector, as well as receive them from him. Hector and Winter Chrom make for especially good teammates, as they can cover Black Knight's Weapons Triangle disadvantage.

  • Refreshers: Olivia, Azura, Performance Arts Inigo, and other refreshers are a big help in helping Hector get into favorable positions despite his low movement.

  • Strong Greens: Brave Ike, Nino, Dorcas, Halloween Henry, and Myrrh can all perform well in covering both physical and magical blues that may pose a threat to Black Knight.

Counters

Black Knight is not the best at taking magical attacks. He will fare quite poorly against most of the prominent magic damage users. Other than that he will struggle against major threats that red units normally do not handle well.

  • Blue Mages: Linde, Reinhardt, Ishtar, and Lute can all make short work of Black Knight due to their ability to target Resistance as well as their Weapon Triangle advantage.

  • Dragons: In addition to targetting Resistance, dragons can be tricky to defeat in a single round of combat due to their higher overall bulk. Standouts include Nowi and Female Corrin.

  • Armor Effective Weapons: Hana, Est, Caeda, and Micaiah can all put a massive dent in Zelgius' health or even kill him due to his class weakness against armor-effective weapons. In Micaiah's case, Black Knight is outright vaporized due to her Weapon Triangle advantage as well as the fact that it targets Resistance.
