Beruka has the highest Defense of any flier and some of the highest physical bulk in the game. For this, she trades subpar Speed, below-average Attack, and poor Resistance.
Boons
- +ATK: It’s always worth getting any Attack stat above 30, and Beruka is no different. Her base Attack of 29 leaves a little to be desired and is vastly improved with a Boon.
- +DEF: Beruka’s greatest strength lies in her physical bulk and she achieves 40 Defense with a Boon.
Neutral
-
HP: In addition to her fantastic bulk, Beruka also has a naturally high HP stat of 46. This makes her very effective at hitting her opponents with Panic Ploy, particularly if she has a weapon forge.
Banes
- -SPD: With a base Speed of 23, Beruka’s Speed might as well be 0 for all the good it’s going to do her. Taking a bane in Speed also has the advantage of forcing opponents to double her, which is good for the timing of her specials.
- -RES: Beruka has plenty of physical bulk, but her magical Resistance is also lacking. Unless you plan on having her tank through mages and dragons, this can be disregarded as well.

When choosing your IVs for Beruka, one comes to the question: “Is there such a thing as too much Defense?” In her case, there actually is- her Defense ultimately has diminishing returns, whereas opting to increase her Attack via an +ATK IV allows her to consistently do more damage. Therefore, it’s recommended that this Beruka take an Attack IV over Defense if possible.
Everywhere else in this build though, it’s all about honing her Defense and setting up the perfect scenario in which the enemy unit attacks Beruka in Enemy Phase and she withstands the blows easily before activating Ignis and wiping them off the map... and then doing the same thing for the next opponent who attacks her.
This is possible through the use of Slaying Axe, Quick Riposte, a Speed bane, and Ignis all working in conjunction with one another. Slaying Axe reduces Ignis’ cooldown to 3, which allows Beruka to activate it in a single combat during the Enemy Phase if the enemy unit doubles her- and they should, given that her Speed with a bane is a mere 20.
Ignis hits incredibly hard with this build, with her weapon forge, Close Defense seal and Steady Stance A slot (or Close Defense, or Earth Boost for a cheaper alternative) increasing her Defense to 53 before any buffs at all. Add a Fortify Flier buff on her and she reaches 59. This literally doubles the damage from her Ignis proc, giving her 47 bonus damage on top of her 46 attack.
Aside from that, there isn’t much else to say on this build. Because she doesn’t care for Speed or, to some extent, Attack, she’s a very good flier to put a Hone Flier buff in her C slot. If using her on a mixed team, she can always support her teammates via Guidance.
Finally, as mentioned earlier, her HP allows her to Panic Ploy her opponents quite reliably with 51 HP after her weapon forge. This can help her or her teammates dismantle annoying emblem teams in the Arena.

- Special: Ignis / Bonfire
- Passive A: Distant Counter
- Passive B: Quick Riposte / Renewal / Guard
- Passive C: Panic Ploy / Hone Fliers
- Sacred Seal: Iote’s Shield / Distant Defense / Deflect Missile
With her massive Defense stat, Beruka is the perfect choice of units to run an anti-archer build for a flier team. Distant Counter is at the center of this set and allows Beruka to counter archers, dagger units, and mages- though for the latter, you may want to consider increasing her Resistance as opposed to her Defense. With a Resistance boon and +RES forge on her Slaying Axe, she manages a respectable 37/29 defensive stat spread, with further mitigation from Distant Defense Seal or Fortify Fliers from a teammate.
This Beruka functions similarly to her optimal build above, but sacrifices a few stat boosts in order to act as a check for most archer units in the game. While she won’t be able to retaliate against Brave Lyn who has Sacae’s Blessing, a Defense-oriented Beruka will still be able to tank her reliably for key AI manipulation in the Arena.
Otherwise, the basic idea is the same: bait a unit with her and counterattack with a devastating Ignis proc. You can attempt to run Renewal or Guard on Beruka for further tanking- Renewal is good for longer fights, whereas Guard helps her to counter Brave Bow archers with Luna.
Finally, she can run Iote’s shield to mitigate archers entirely, but her Defense is actually high enough to take the hit and run Distant Defense instead if she’d also be potentially dueling mages. This will make her engagements with archers more dangerous for her and she’ll lose more HP, but particularly if she has Fortify buffs, she’s well suited to come out of those engagements victorious.
Introduction
Beruka is a familiar face if you’ve ever pulled green orbs, but her utility is far beyond what most would imagine just by glancing over her stats. With a sky-high defense and a high HP pool to match, it’s downright difficult to take her out in one fight, and her incredible sustain allows her to charge up a long Ignis special and hit for a massive amount of damage.
While she struggles as a standalone unit, Beruka finds a very strong home in a flier-oriented team where she can support the Player Phase nuke units with offensive and speed buffs and receive defensive buffs from them in turn and shield them from their counters.
There’s not much to state for Beruka save for her immense physical soak. Her Attack, Resistance, and Speed all leave something to be desired, though the Attack stat at least can be mitigated by a boon.
Strengths
Flying Fortress
Beruka’s Defense stat of 37 outclasses even most armor units and she has the highest possible defense of any flier.
Her mobility, coupled with her Defense, allows her to quickly swoop in to rescue teammates from the enemy range.
High HP
Beruka’s high HP is beneficial to her as it increases her physical soak and makes her incredibly difficult to oneshot with physical damage.
This also helps her to utilize Panic Ploy in order to debuff and cripple enemy Blade tomes and other emblem buffs.
Good Availability
Being available at a 3 star rarity means that Beruka is a common sight in many barracks.
This makes it very easy to get ideal IVs for her.
Weaknesses
Low Speed
Beruka’s 23 base Speed ensures that she’ll never be a top tier Player Phase unit.
Attempting to increase her Speed is all but pointless unless you plan on investing heavily into her, and even then there are other units better suited for the job.
This ensures that she will almost always be doubled, which can make her more fragile than she appears.
Middling Attack
At 29 Attack, Beruka has difficulty doing an appropriate amount of damage, particularly with her native Killer Axe.
She will need a weapon upgrade investment as well as a generous IV in order to make her more lethal.
The need for an +ATK boon in IV takes away from potential defensive boons that could also benefit her.
Team Options
Counters
Beruka’s low Resistance and Speed can be taken advantage of and countered easily with the right setup.
- Red Mages: These in particular are lethal, such as Sanaki, Tharja, and Celica.
- Dragons: She has difficulty against manaketes such as Young Tiki, Fae, and Myrrh
- Flier Weaknesses: She must always be wary of units who are effective against fliers, like Brave Lyn, Bridal Cordelia, and Merric.

FD2 because I haven't bothered upgrading it yet
Basically Beruka is a tank that will occasionally proc Ignis for upwards of 42 damage not counting flier buffs. Yeah her attack is garbage and so is her speed and resistance but I'm super committed to this niche build on an even niche-r unit

Flier tanks that aren't premium units like Myrrh cannot operate in the same way that an infantry or armor tank does. Specifically, it is difficult for fliers to achieve a decent enough degree of mixed DEF and RES to justify giving them Distant Counter. Obviously, if that was the goal in mind, you simply would just use Myrrh, or opt for a mixed team with something like Sheena.
Depending on the map terrain, however, you will sometimes have no choice but to rely on a flying unit to act as a physical tank, and not necessarily secure a kill. In other words, the unit you want is one that has the staying power to use assist skills and deliver Goads, Drives, etc.
Although it is questionable enough to upgrade a seal for Fortress Def 3 with 150 coins, you may be hard pressed equip Beruka with Close Def 3 as opposed to your core units. Therefore, it seems reasonable to go for a double dip on Fortress Def 3, since the unit archetype you are aiming for is one that isn't aggressive. The worst case scenario is you can always just use this seal for other units, because it essentially turns them into dedicated Ignis bombers.
QR3 comes without argument, but the cost, again, may be questionable. It is arguably Beruka's best B skill, so the choice to settle for the "QR2 of shame" is up to you.
As a support-archetype tank, C skills should always be flier support skills. Hone Fliers is expensive, but one or more Goad Fliers will stack with one instance of Hone. It goes without saying, it's easy to inherit (from Palla).
A Beruka like this operates well with player phase fliers. Caeda maneuvers easily into kills on armors and frail mages, but may need help against blue tanks. As the unassailable flier tank, Beruka is a great teammate for Caeda, another strong budget flier.
Truly strong bow users can still be problematic. Normally you would use Distant Counter to retaliate, but you have to drop Fortress Defense for Iote's Shield. Or, you run Iote's Shield without DC. Needless to say, you are better off using a TA Raventome flier in your team, as they might additionally be able to control other problematic colors.

This build expects that you really want to invest in Beruka. I'm basing it off of my 5*+6 with Summoner Support, so your stats may be different from mine.
Skills:
Slaying Axe (+Spd): A good overall weapon that helps boost her speed and hp a bit more, and allows for 1 charge Glimmers
Reposition: It's pretty self explanatory, but you can use whatever you want for the support slot.
Glimmer: Since she already comes with it and can charge it turn 1, as well as how much her ATK will be buffed, it's a good skill for her.
Life and Death 3: This is where it gets fun. +5 Atk/Spd is what we really want for this build, and it doesn't hurt he physical bulk that much. Mages were already an issue, so reducing her Res doesn't hurt us much. You can swap this for Fury 3 if you want to keep her bulk while letting her get into Desperation range more easily.
Desperation 3: With the buffs she's getting, (and assuming yours is the same as mine) she'll have a respectable 38 speed before buffs. Trust me, we can get it higher.
Threaten Speed 3: Something to artificially make her faster. Even then, C slot is flexible.
Speed +3 Seal: Just to get her to that 38 speed.
This build may seem odd at first, but once you start adding in other units, she will decimate anybody who stands in her way. I already did the math for when she has these buffs:
Hone Fliers
Camilla's Axe (+Eff)
Goad Fliers
Ally Support w/ Corrin (M)
Yato (+Eff)
Spur Speed 3
Drive Attack 2
With these buffs, her Attack comes out to 77, with a speed of 61 (assuming I did it all right). For someone with such low base speed, that's amazing. If you wish to try it, go ahead. Your stats might be more or less depending on investment and skills.

Beruka is a good 4*+10 project since she's so available in the green pool and she is a very good tank. She's the tankiest flier and one of the tankiest units, while with her attack stat she hits like a wet noodle, we rely on her specials to actually deal damage.
Weapon: Slaying Axe+ (+Defense). We buff her HP and Defense with this refine, while speeding up her Special.
Assist: Swap. If Beruka doesn't activate her special and kill the enemy in her follow-up attack, she can use Swap to trade places with her allies to finish them off.
Special: Ignis. A 4 cooldown special, that with her weapon turns into a 3 cooldown. With her low speed comboed with Quick Riposte, Beruka should be able to have her special charged every turn.
A skill: Fortress Def. This might not be the ideal skill, but sacrificing her already low attack for better defense so she hits harder with her special is the idea here.
B skill: Quick Riposte. Beruka's speed is so low she'd never double anyone, Quick Riposte is chosen here to allow her to charge her special faster.
C skill: Fortify Fliers. Defensive buffs for her flier friends.
Seal: Fortress Def. Same as her A skill!

Basic flying tank build, using both pricier skills and some that are more budget. Given Beruka's innate tankiness, she doesn't really need Hone Fliers to do damage, and is better off buffing speedier allies.
Fortress Def gives the biggest bang for her buck, and Ignis scales well off of this increase in Def, with Ignis adding 36 damage. Guard prevents any enemies from activating their special so long as Beruka keeps her health up- a feat that's rather easy against blue and green units.
Iote's Shield seal prevents a large amount of damage from archers, though Merric will still very likely eat through her HP by using magic damage.
