There are two types of people who use Alfonse: Those who do by choice, and those who are forced into it. This build is for the latter, maximizing Alfonse’s potential and team impact in an Arena setting. Many of the slash options on this set are high-SP skills built to maximize his score weight, but the primary choices are designed to make him an effective combatant of his own.
His +Eff refine makes Alfonse very reliable against green foes, and is a nice way to allow Alfonse to nab a few extra kills for some bonus score. However, those wishing to take Alfonse to the extreme in terms of Arena score will want to use his Resistance refine in order to better tank red mages and dragons. Dropping the +Eff refine means Alfonse can be used against weakened blue units as well.
Reposition is the classic option, and makes Arena just a little less stressful. Rally Def/Res is another great choice, increasing his score and allowing him to buff your core team members. This goes hand in hand with your choice of Spur skill for his C slot. Alfonse can make good use of any Dual Rally skill.
Distant Counter maximises score and allows Alfonse to handle green mages and most archers sent his way. However, if your Arena core already has sufficient Distant Counter units, Fury is the best general choice, boosting his stats and making Fólkvangr’s stat boosts easier to trigger. Swordbreaker is taken to allow Alfonse to beat the vast majority of sword units, even the Slaying Weapon/Wrath sets used by many high tier swords. Chill Atk is a higher-scoring option that gives Alfonse a bigger emphasis on team support. He’s also a perfectly good user of Wrath, but it has poor synergy with Aether.
Finally, his Seal slot. Quick Riposte does wonders in patching up Alfonse’s poor Speed, and is required to score one round KO’s against many high-Defense green units. Def Tactic and Spur Atk are support options, the former being useful in a mixed-movement team and the latter as a catch-all option.

Sacred Seal: Brash Assault
Those people who love Alfonse and want to see him tear through teams might instead prefer this offensive set. Alfonse’s ability to stack Attack buffs is impressive, making him one of the best threshold sweepers in the game. His playstyle revolves around lowering his HP to half or less, then initiating combat on foes. Although it is a gimmicky set, it is relatively cheap to build, fun to use and surprisingly effective, given the right support. As a side effect, this set also makes Alfonse incredibly resilient against physical damage once he’s under 80% HP.
Desperation and Brash Assault are the two core skills of the build. In combination, they let Alfonse guarantee follow-up attacks at 50% HP or less, and perform both his attacks immediately when initiating combat. Foes who can’t counterattack (such as archers) won’t be subject to being doubled. This functions as a pseudo-Brave weapon, albeit with much stronger attacking power: Fólkvangr with an Atk refine and Attack boost reaches an effective 25 Mt. For his A slot skill, Brazen Atk/Def gives Alfonse the strongest boost, and shares its activation requirements with Fólkvangr. Death Blow is nearly as good, but makes him more frail. Fury is a decent option that packs less power, but makes it easier for Alfonse to reach his required HP level.
Ardent Sacrifice or Reciprocal Aid are recommended as tools to get Alfonse to low HP. He can also run Rally Def/Res as a support skill if HP-altering skills aren’t proving useful. Glimmer’s low charge time mean it can be activated many times, and it scales well with Alfonse’s high raw Attack. His C slot skill is largely down to player preference, but Spur Def/Res is a fantastic general choice, as is his natural C skill Spur Atk.
Introduction
A fan favorite unit, Alfonse is the blue-haired lord and one of the protagonists of Fire Emblem Heroes. Although he’s one of the first units that players receive, Alfonse is notorious for being an underperforming unit. This is due to his inability to gain merges, poor statline, lack of a boon/bane and underwhelming unique weapon.
The story of Alfonse is a sad one, as he is overshadowed by nearly every other sword user in the game. However, it would be unwise to assume he is completely useless. Fólkvangr’s new refine options have given him a new lease on life and help to circumvent some of Alfonse’s traditional problems.
Thanks to his importance in the story, Alfonse is in a unique situation. Many players are forced to use him for modes like Arena, and he is often included in Grand Hero Battle rerun quests. Even if you aren’t a fan of the “Bench Lord”, it’s still recommended to give him a basic build. Alfonse can pull his weight with just a few common skills, meaning anyone can make good use of Askr’s Prince.
Strengths
Huge Attack
Alfonse’s greatest strength is his base Attack stat of 35. This makes him a hard-hitting unit, even without a boon to raise his Attack. His unique weapon Fólkvangr allows Alfonse to power up even more, giving him a +7 in-combat boost to Attack and Defense. Combined with the weapon’s Triangle Adept effect, and Alfonse can cleanly OHKO most green units in the game, and 2HKO the rest while taking little damage in return.
Good physical defense.
At base 32 Defense, Alfonse is a reasonably tanky swordsman and can weather assaults from physical sources of damage. Fólkvangr’s special refine also gives him a +7 boost to his Defense, further helping him tank damage. Such a high Defense means that he often doesn't mind suffering follow-up attacks from physical units, helping to mitigate his low Speed.
Weaknesses
Poor Resistance.
Base 22 Resistance is nothing to write home about, making him a poor counter to magic-based threats such as mages and dragons. However, with Triangle Adept on his weapon, he can afford to run Distant Counter in his A slot and have both skills simultaneously. This allows Alfonse to reliably counter green mages, something he couldn’t do before Fólkvangr’s refine.
Low Speed.
Alfonse’s poor Speed stat of 25 is far below that of other sword users, and makes him prone to follow-up attacks. Many high-tier swords have exceptional Speed, forcing Alfonse to rely on Swordbreaker or Quick Riposte to score follow-up attacks. Alfonse’s Speed makes it easy for foes to trigger Speed-based skills such as Windsweep, and makes him more susceptible to weapons such as the Vassal’s Blade wielded by Karla.
Cannot merge at all.
Arguably the biggest nail in Alfonse’s coffin is his inability to gain merges. While other units can accrue increases of up to +4 in each stat, Alfonse is stuck with his base stats. He also can’t optimize his statline with boons and banes. Bonus unit stat boosts in Arena help him out somewhat, but do not affect other modes and apply to other units as well as Alfonse. With extra score awarded for KO’s with bonus units, Alfonse is not a particularly attractive choice compared to other units.
Team Options
Counters
Alfonse is even more susceptible to foes with weapon triangle advantage due to Fólkvangr granting the effects of Triangle Adept. Most of his other counters can eliminate him by exploiting his two statistical weak points: his low Speed and Resistance. Alfonse is easily defeated by mages, can be speed creeped by faster Swordbreakers, or slain by Wrath-boosted Specials from other units. He also fears healers who can dodge his Distant Counter and slowly whittle down his HP.
-
Blue Units: Thanks to having Triangle Adept, Alfonse is stopped cold by blue units, who wield a 40% damage boost on him. Commonly seen are Effie, Nephenee, Cordelia, Tana, Fjorm, Gwendolyn, Nowi and Corrin(F).
-
Non-green magic damage: With only 22 base Resistance, Alfonse is annihilated by non-green sources of magical damage. Ninian, Tiki(Young), Summer Tiki(Young), Delthea, Linde, Lute, Micaiah, Reinhardt, Lilina and Winter Tharja have the power to easily OHKO Alfonse.
- Staff-users: While they can help Alfonse by activating Fólkvangr’s effects, they are more often a menace than helpful. Not only do they ignore Distant Counter with Dazzling Staff, many can double and KO Alfonse thanks to his low Speed and Resistance. Wielders of Gravity+ are especially annoying, preventing Alfonse from escaping fights. Maribelle, Nanna, Elise, Genny, Sakura, Serra and Bridal Lyn are very dangerous foes for Alfonse.

Bonfire | C | Threaten Def 3 |

Risky build that needs Alfonse to get his HP under 50%. Once that threshold is reached, he will be hitting with 62 Atk and 39 Def (thanks to Brazen Atk/Def and Fólkvangr buffs) and will double all enemies who can counter-attack with his Brash Assault Sacred Seal, without letting them hit back thanks to Desperation.
Bonfire is the special of choice because of Brazen Atk/Def and Alfonse's already above average Def, adding 19 damage if Brazen Atk/Def is active (1 more than what Draconic Aura would deal, and the equivalent to proccing Luna against a 38 Def enemy).
Reciprocal Aid is there to help Alfonse reach the HP threshold.
Threaten Def 3 can be swapped for another ability if needed, but it will help Alfonse nuke even the toughest enemies.

Since launch Alfonse was always considered as one of the worst sword users in the game, not because of him being bad, but everyone being so much better than him in a lot of ways, and it didn't helped much that his sword's effect is one of the most overlooked skills in the game, rendering him almost (if not completely) useless compared to any other sword-wielder.
This build may take kind of a risky turn, but it's budget while also being somewhat useful that it might be worth giving it a try.
Both defiant def and Folkvangr's effects synergize well with brash assault, allowing Alfonse to double anyone who can retaliate back if he initiates the combat proves to be specially useful for him and his pityful spd stat. Threathen defense is obvionly used for more damage with both hits, while atk smoke seal reduces the damage that he would take against another enemy, but it could safely be replaced with heavy seal so that he can proc his special everytime he doubles

An enemy-phase oriented build for someone looking to NOT bench Alfonse, and capitalize on his notable defense instead. Perhaps use him as bait for physical enemies?
With Wo Dao’s defense refinement, his defense is 36 when attacking. Steady breath and close def seal add 10 on, making his defense 46 when melee attacked. Quick Riposte helps him to counter during enemy phase, and proc Ignis (Bonfire can be used as well) more often. Threaten def 3 helps him to deal more damage when attacked.
Side note: I have Alfonse summoner supported, so this may be a build that only works under that. He can reach up to 48 defense with summoner support.

A build where i replaced Alfonse sword with a slaying Edge and gave it def mode to put his defence higher.
This is more of a trow in build if anything, Good enough offense with Death Blow 3 on player phase and Sturdy blow 2 if you can afford that.
Good enemy phase with 41 def and qr to get special charges and retaliate against melees with his Bonfire.
Panic Ploy is there if you can afford it but really can be changed to anything that benefits your team.
Same goes for reposition.
Not award winning but with this set Alfonse gets the job done well enough and it shouldn't be to expensive to build if you can afford the Slaying Edge.

Alfonse has terrible SPD but fair ATK--making him a decent candidate for Brave Sword+. With this weapon, Alfonse's attack will fall short. To allow him to get consistent kills, he will need Death Blow 3 and the Attack +3 seal. Threaten Defense 3 can bolster his offensive potential.
Alfonse turns into a predator against other sword units with Swordbreaker 3 equipped. With Brave Sword+, Alfonse can charge his special abilities faster per turn. Moonbow can allow Alfonse to deal more damage against armored units that refuse to die easily.
