One artist I came to appreciate fairly recently was Chiko. They’ve done PA Olivia, Michaiah, and WF Hinoka. I personally like Michaiah and Hinoka and I just really appreciate how their eyes are drawn, and everything else. They don’t necessarily look exactly like how they were in their respective games, but the style I just really appreciate.

I also appreciate Fujikawa Akira for the work they’ve done on both Celicas and Marisa. Really hoping they do Brave Celica as well. The detail in the hair and eyes for these characters is gorgeous.

Tobi also has a lot of good ones, namely female Morgan for me but that’s also coupled with her voice actress.

I personally love Raven. Artist AKIRA did an amazing job on his artwork, and even though it is decidedly different from the art on the majority of units, it really shines, especially his injured pose. I think his voice made me fall in love with him though. Bryce Papenbrook has also been one of my faves from various animes like SAO or AOT, and he fits Raven's personality splendidly. Raven is also so mysterious. Real name is Raymond but goes by Raven. That's a mischevious boy.

"I'm not angry. This is just my face." - Raymond, AKA Raven

Also his sister is amazing.

Report

I agree ravens really does stand out. I always found it a bit strange that his artwork has a sword yet he wield an axe. Bryce papenbrook is a great voice actor I agree! He’s quite versatile and although I don’t know much about raven, after listening to his voice lines again, he does stand out in his own way artwise and voice-wise. That armor is also pretty sick.

Marisa also have a very similar voice line about her not looking angry and it’s just her face. XD

1. Okaya (Donnel), Kawasumi (M!Kana), Suekana Kumiko (LA!Hector), Tobi (M!Morgan | F!Morgan), lack (Saizo).

2. M!Grima | F!Grima.

3. I do like Donnel's art, M!Robin's, and Henry's (and H!Henry's) art. I also really like M!Morgan and F!Morgan's art too. I do wish, however, that F!Morgan's damaged art wasn't so... fanservicey (at least it is in my opinion) but that's a whole 'nother discussion.

4. I think Okuma Yugo did fantastic on M!Grima. Even though many people don't like it, I think it really captures Grima's "ugliness" towards humanity and its flaws.

"They claim their actions are for the good of others, but that's merely a show of self-indulgence.
Humans are selfish. And the ugliness of mankind has turned me repulsive."

Report

Donnels, Saizos and Henry’s are pretty spot on now that I look back at them. I think the Halloween one for Henry does it a bit better though.

Another Morgan appreciator!! YUS!! I never thought female Morgan’s injured art looked fanservicey, but I can see how it could be seen that way. Lotta leg. I mainly appreciate the tacticians getup in a dark flier form. Thought that was pretty nifty!

That’s a really awesome and cool way to think about grimas art! Never would’ve thought of that! I’m also everyone leaving a quote at the end! Nice touch!

Report

Yeah, I love both male and female Morgan's art. I dunno what it is, but something about their eyes are captivating, and their hair is done so well.

I really do like their Tactician robes.

For F!Morgan's damaged art, I think it's mostly the way she's turning that kinda throws it off for me. I think there are a few units that do the whole "let me show my legs/butt while I'm injured" pose and it's kinda weird for me, but overall not really all that bad.

*cough Catria cough*
*cough Lene cough*

Report

I always had a female Morgan so I definitely appreciate her more. But yes!! I forgot to mention the hair!! The styles and the color are so goooooood!!! I also appreciate that both of their confessions ask you to take them in as our apprentices! It’s kind of cute.

Hahahaha!! Yes Catria and Lene do the same, but Lene already starts off really bad on the fan service meter before the injured pose!

My man for that shout out 😎👉

And that is a very interesting question.
Well, I definitely have a lot of artists I appreciate. Tobi, PenekoR, HAKO, Daisuke Izuka, Konfuzi Kokon, Itagaki Hako, Mikuro, and a lot more. But there is honestly no artist I appreciate more than Yura. There's just something about their art. I just can't see any of the characters they've done being drawn by someone else other than them. The characters they do all seem to fit how they look. Clarisse is this brooding and dark sniper, undercover and in the shade. Yura made her look a bit distant, like she was stepping out from somewhere in her neutral and attack pictures. Navarre doesn't look as approachable as others of his archtype (edgy enemy who doesn't want to do their job, may or may not be edgy) like Ishtar or Legault. Yura made him look like he REALLY doesn't do talk. Sonya is a very dark but flamboyant looking woman. And I think they got her look perfect. She's been through a lot in the past, having a bad father and losing all of her sisters. So I think Yura nailed her darker shade look. It feels like she carries burden, even if the fan service on her is very clear.
But my favorite from him and the one I resonate with the most and who I think to be by far Yura's best piece is Shigure. Not only do I love both his alts looks, I love them for completely different reasons. PA!Shigure looks clothed in dark and a look of melancholy, all with a smile to hide the sorrow. If course he would look this way, not only is he laying low looking for Azura, but he doesn't even know if his mother's alive. HIS mother, not the alternate mother he meet in the paralogue. Hes a 'Dark Singer' as his title says, sings with an appearance of sadness. Regular Shigure, however, is the total opposite. He's bright, practically glowing. He sings in the sky free of worry, and is enjoy his artistic hobbies. He looks very 'uplifting' just like his title says. And it's a surprise, because none of the other characters Yuras' done are nearly as bright as regular Shigure looks. Yura got the aspects right for both of Shigure's alts.
All of the art blows me away, but there's just something about Yura I can't get over.
Again, very good question. And thanks for the shout out!

Report

Thank you for the compliment and no problem for the shoutout! Gotta give credit where it’s due, like you clearly just did for Yura!

I hadn’t looked at the GHB unit much, I keep meaning to use feathers to upgrade them eventually for their confessions (I love the level 40 confessions, one of my favorite things), but different merge projects or other units I appreciate keep popping up before them (currently working on a male Corrin and Clair)

But they do all look very dark, the art definitely captures that you’re right and it is very impressive how Yura has shown different kinds of darkness between these characters. But after hearing all of the darker characters he’s done, it is surprising to hear that he did both shigures given the newer of the two is the complete opposite! Shows off his versatility for sure. Seems Yura’s specialty is being able to showcase characters personalities and pasts in their art. Hadn’t even given Yura much thought but thank you for the opinion! The style is definitely unique!

For one reason or another I really love Tobi. They've drawn Klein, Clive, Summer Leo, NY and Summer Takumi, Canas, and the Morgans, maybe even more. I especially like the summer arts since I feel like they match the theme of the banner well. Tobi's art is rather bright and stylistic, which just fits with the happiness of a the characters (especially Takumi lol).
My favorite character that the did was probably M!Morgan. Really like my son, the art, and the voice actor/lines and it all just came together to make me love him as a unit and my premier merge project (if I could just get merges!) Tobi's art made Morgan a bright and happy boy and I just love it.

Report

I definitely agree with everything you said about Tobi. Tobi is high in my list! They’ve done quite a lot of the units, a few more than the ones you’ve listed I believe, and their style is definitely to be appreciated for many reasons in my opinion! More Morgan appreciators!!! YUS!! Mind posting the build you have in mind for your happy boy merge project? 😃 I’m interested to see what you have in mind!

Report

Odd is good! Making your own unique build to test out or just use because you like it is great! I’m not all too creative so I tend to look at a bunch of recommended builds and combine factors from here and there or just use the recommended build I can actually immediately put on the unit at that time.

My builds tend to be all about optimizing one or two stats in particular on a unit to specialize them within their team, and for M!Morgan that was speed. I feel a bit odd about it since most people wouldn't cut into his res and would typically use swift sparrow (which I don't have) in place of LnD. I thought it would be alright since he's paired with a dancer and will get the Grima's Truth buffs, which would make up for that...

Report

Erhmagerd that's a lotta speed!!! He's still bulky enough to take one hit even without buffs, so this build is definitely interesting, but it works and is pretty cool! Thanks for sharing!

My favorite artist would have to be cuboon. A lot of the characters they've done are knights (Lukas, Reinhardt & Olwen, Tana, Palla) and I really like how they illustrated the sort of qualities knights usually have, like being calm and polite. Tana is probably least fitting of typical knights but I just love how cheery and youthful she looks.

Deirdre and Julia's art really stand out for me, especially Deirdre. The reservedness yet gentle blended with the unfortunate amnesia is just depicted so beautifully. I prefer Deirdre a bit more though, especially because of her confession. Hands down my favorite, it's both heart breaking and sweet. Some of my other favorite character art would be Shiro, Brave Lucina, Leo, and both Ninians. Especially love Ninian's voice, Brianna Knickerbocker did an amazing job.

Report

I was wondering if someone would mention cuboon, they do have an interesting style. To me the faces of their characters seem to have more detail to them than others, or maybe the skin, I haven't been too sure. Didn't notice they were all knight characters though, that is pretty neat actually. Tana is kind of the oddball out in that regard.

I also did find Julia and deirdre to have their own kind of air about them in their art, but this actually spells it out nicely for me, so thank you. Never really would've thought about it that way and it's definitely true looking back at their art. I do remember that confession too.

Brianna Knickerbocker does do a wonderful job with the characters she voices! Sakura is my favorite of hers! very unique!

Report

I've always found Deirdre in particular to be very captivating, and especially her inner robes even if that made seem odd. It's like she carries around a galaxy with her, and I've found it to be like a representation of the depth to her with her amnesia and whatnot.

1. There's something Daisuke Izuka's art that I love, specially The Black Knight so big and imposing. His lines are especially fun for me, villains always seem to bring out a more fun side to actors, Robert Clotworthy's Black Knight lines for some reason remind me of a Disney Villain or something, especially "The son of Gawain...Ike! He..now..is my prey..."

2 & 3. Adult Tiki's art always grabs my attention and honestly, it's the big, kind of sparkly eyes Ito Noizi gave her and her younger self. There's no simple way to explain it, her eyes just grab me. Okaya didn't quite do the same with Adult Summer Tiki's eyes and instead focused on watermelons, but I do love the big smile she has on her face when she procs a special. Gaou did try the eye sparkle thing with Young Summer Tiki, but it didn't have the same effect for me, though it's still adorable. Ito Noizi did a great job making both a cute girl and a beautiful woman have this look of child-like wonder in their eyes(easiest way I can explain it). Okaya did a good job providing fanservicey art for a fanservicey time of year for a character I adore. And Gaou did a great job making an adorable little dragon girl even more adorable.

4. Mendako's Arthur. IF Arthur ever gets an alt(like a Superhero for a Halloween Banner?), I sincerely hope Mendako does the art for him.

Report

The villains do tend to have some pretty good voice lines I agree. My favorite of Black Knights is, "Curious as to who I am? You're better off not knowing. Or perhaps..... even asking" Gets me every time. But i do like how it can change the voice actors tone too like you mentioned. May be a common one but the difference of David Vincent with regular Robin and Grima Robin is particularly fascinating. I like the Disney villain comparison! Does he call anyone a fool? I think that may be one of his special lines. If he calls anyone fool, guaranteed disney villain! XD

Adult tiki is a unit I have a +10 of and a unit I use often and I TOTALLY understand the deal with her eyes. They are full of child-like wonder. and yet adult tiki's voice lines can be both quite mature (3,000 years will do that I guess) and childish in their own way. Young tiki's eyes are very similar. I agree the summer variants didn't do as good a job, but they do have their own aspects to be appreciated like you mentioned. This new young summer tiki, the floaties on her, and the fact that she's now a flying unit, So cute and adorable and kind of hysterical! And the smile on summer adult tiki is great too!

Ooooohh! Superhero arthur would be quite the interesting unit! I like it! Here's hoping!

Report

Yeah, Black Knight does indeed have "FOOL!" as a special line. All his lines are great. He's a ton of fun to play around with.

Another thing about Tiki in general is Mela Lee's voice, she does a great job at both voices. I can't help but smile when I hear any of her lines. Especially now with Young Summer Tiki's "Ugh...it's taking me so long to grow up.." and I didn't think anyone could top Fae's attack sounds on cuteness but I think Mela Lee took the cake with this new Tiki.

I don't know how they'd do a Superhero Arthur, there's so many different directions they could go with that, it's actually a bit daunting to think about.

Report

Confirmed Disney villain then!! I've seen a lot of great, strange and unique builds with him. Namely a brave sword one on youtube.

Mela Lee is perfection for any of the Tiki's. The slight accent to whatever she says in the young or adult voice is so adorable. Don't remember that voice line but that is awesome and adorable. I'll have to go listen to my young summer tiki again!

Maybe they could make him look like All Might from My Hero Academia? He has the right colors I think!

Report

For A!Tiki, I love the way the whole of her is drawn. Even if not the poses themselves, each line is properly pronounced and intentional. I'm not sure how to explain it, but she just looks... right. Many characters look off in one aspect or another, but A!Tiki is pulled off very well.

Cuboon and Asatani Tomoyo are the power duo. My favorite of Cuboon’s work has to be WT!Olwen, she looks very refined and cool. My favorite of Asatani Tomoyo’s has to be SM!Eirika, I love how queen like Eirika looks.

An absolute POWER move would be if Minerva were to get an alt and the artist be Cuboon

Other notable mentions for artists i like are Haimura Kiyotaka (Deirdre and Julia’s artist), Kusugi Toku, Kita Senri, and Sachiko Wada

Report

Cuboon's so good at blending shades for a soft effect to make a character pleasing to look (or stare) at.
I can't believe I forgot about Aliya Senri since I have practically none of the units they've drawn. They all look so regal and stately.

Report

Asatani Tomoyo is definitely another one I appreciate! I like the shading in SM Eirika and just her poses in general. Her attacking pose in particular. Everything about SM Eirika is just flowy and elegant. Cuboon also does a great job with shading too! Like I mentioned before I appreciate the skin tones and the faces of cuboons characters. Very unique compared to the other artists.

I could definitely see how cuboon could make Minerva look even better!!

I do like the styles of Kita Senri and Sachiko Wada too!!

1. Hands down, I would have to say that my overall favorite artist is Asatani Tomoyo. The amount of detail that they add to the entire drawing is just incredible, and their character’s special portraits (in particular, Eirika and Ayra) look absolutely beautiful.

2. Fallen Robin (M) has the art that I resonate with the most personally. I find that his face in particular does a good job of portraying what kind of character he is, as well as his body language and aura.

3. Soleil has some pretty good art too, and she does look like a total cutie in each of her sprites. It’s also nice how her art is like the middle ground between Olivia and Inigo, though I would’ve liked to have seen her as less of a moe-esque character and drawn by someone like HAKO, (Felicia and Caeda’s artist).

4. I think Amagaitaro’s rendition of Nino was good at making her seem like the cinnamon roll that she is, while also making her look even cuter in her attack sprites.

Report

Some of the community reaction to M!Grima tarnished his art (*coughdamagedartcough*) in my eyes for a bit at first, but he hands down is one of my favorite units. He's just portrayed so well! Between that mirth in his expression and his voice lines (which are very well done), he just makes you think. He's just so uniquely drawn compared to other units, and it pulls your eye in.
Agree with everything you said about Soleil, it was Heroes that made me love her.

Report

Asatani Tomoyo does do a wonderful job with the characters they've drawn. All of their characters do have so much detail unique to them. The special portraits, especially SM Eirikas are superb!!

M Grima's face got so much criticism! Looking like the grinch and all that, but yea someone else really liked how his face was drawn in that it shows the ugliness of his personality towards humans. Not sure if you feel the same but I thought that was unique for sure.

Looking back at Soleil, I do see the mix of inigo and olivia like you mentioned. That's impressive! I'm now kind of hoping they do something similar with Ophelia in the future! I love HAKOs Felicia (I also love the voice acting by Connor Kelley, the line, "D-Did you know I'm from the Ice Tribe in my world? ..... Now you do!" is my absolute favorite!!!!!) so I wouldn't mind seeing Soleil drawn by them.

Amagaitaro has a lot of good characters in heroes too! But yes the Nino's all have the cinnamon roll qualities! XD

Report

The artist I probably like the most would probably be Mayo for his Summer!Robin artwork. I think that the artist drew her face in a really appealing way. The lighting is soft and the coloring has a very nice matte finish With some gorgeous shadowing. All the linework is precise and gives the effect of something that was hand drawn even if she was painted digitally. The amount of minutiae is also really incredible for such a soft drawing. Her hair, her robe, her weapon all have incredible amounts of detail. I love the more classic anime styles of most characters but this is something of a higher caliber. On top of all that, she's tied as one of my all time favorite characters, so like, win-win. I just wish her default and Grima versions were better, but oh well.

Some of my runner-ups are M!Morgan, F!Morgan, Performing!Olivia, Lissa, Effie, Alm, and FW!Hinoka.

Also, shout out to whoever did the background artwork for Summoner supported units. It's seriously gorgeous art.

Report

For me, it's Fujikawa Akira. Specifically for Marissa. She looks like a classic 70's table top RPG protagonist. I thought it all just worked for her and was one of the reasons I merged her and built her up.

My favorite characters were Lyn, Lloyd, and Eliwood in that order. And while I have been really happy with all of Lyn's, they've been rather safe so far. The Love Abounds and Legendary one are the first that actually look a bit different, albeit slightly off. Lloyd's is well documented as having been a failure and I rather agree. Eliwood is the same, although at least was redeemed with his Love Abounds Alt.

The one artist that got a character or aspect right? It's tough because I do love a lot of the characters, but I'll go with BUNBUN with Lilina. Her art looks great and her default pose is very prim and proper with a dash of nerdy which seems to track with her character. But then her special artwork shows the absolute turn Lilina can have if backed into a wall. I just think it was really well done.
