Real talk. Do who you like, never go for someone you dislike just for score. You'll get bored and regret it later, no matter how well it helps you score.

Seriously, this. Don't worry about which characters are "good" in the meta game. Going all in on a build of your favorite character might force you to find a creative and surprisingly satisfying build. My two ongoing merge projects are Lyon and Florina, and I have no regrets--yet how often do you ever see those two in the arena?

Don’t merge a character simply for arena scoring and viability because your going to end up not enjoying the merging process. Every character is really good, but you need to take some time and effort in order to reach their full potential.

If you have multiple favorites, then ask yourself what is the preferred playstyle you want. Are they a character that I am not going to bench for awhile. If you end up merging a character you end up not using, its a waste of resources and time.

Me personally I hate merging armors because they are restricted to 1 movement and aren’t my preferred playstyle.

I like to build units that have a unique play style different from the normal. I have +7 Clair who is my Reindhart and Mage counter with her unusual high res. She does require a little more investment though, but thanks to her Rhomphaia refinement, she can be built as a Armor and Horse killer.

I am more into my +9 Eirika because of her unique Sieglinde refine that allows her to take into visible buffs from others as her own. She is truly a monster and can work on any type team and even emblem teams.

In my opinion, I would merge units who are unusual and overlooked because they can become some of the best projects with surprises that may have not been known otherwise.

First choice is your favorite movement type. They all play a bit differently, so surely you would slightly prefer one type over another. If you really don't care at all who, then whomever you get 11 copies of first. I pulled so many Effie's looking for my final copy of Catria, and I don't even like armor units.

It's as everyone says. Make merge projects for units you enjoy using and will use a lot.
